exemplified by the iTunes Case
Bjørn Erik ThonConsumer Ombudsman
Some clarifications
• I will not discuss the Itunes case and the DRM/lack of interoperability - question in itself
• But – the case is a great example on how consumers can be educated by the use of media, blogs and discussion groups
What issues are at stake?
• Is it okay that a worldwide company put strickt limitations on how you can use music bought online?
• Is it okay to download music from pirate-sites, like Bear-share, Kaasa, Napster or Limewire?
• What are the consequenses of
– lack of interoperability?
– Piracy – and illegal downloading?
Where do young people learn?
• In the classroom – of course
• On the internet – of course
• But; also by the use of
– Reading news
– Bloggs
– Chats
– Discussion sites
• These arenas of education should not be forgotten
A few words about the the media coverage and how the digital media was used of this

• Blogs
• Discussion sites
Some adventages of using the media, bloggs etc

• It gives great case studies in classroom education
• Blogs, discussion groups etc is a great way for young consumers to be involved – and to be educated - and it is NOT only for the few
