Choosing your career
Choosing your career is an
important step because your
future is at stake. It is generally
observed that a large section ofstudents are unaware of what
they want to achieve in life.
This amounts to a situation like
boarding a train without knowing
ones destination. Undoubtedly it
may result in waste of precious
time as well as money.
This underscores the need
for setting a meaningful and
attainable goal. In taking such a
decision one must keep in mindones qualication, interests,
knowledge, experience, if any,
attitude, potentialities, and
existing trends in the job market.
Knowing your weakness and
strength enables you to set a
meaningful and attainable goal.
The following guidelines
may prove useful in making your
career a success.
u While academicmerit is generally pivotal
in making an entry into anycareer an individuals level of
understanding, his application
of knowledge and professional
training are necessary. Personality
and even ones outlook towards
life is general and career, in
particular, plays a signicant role
in ensuring continuous progress.
uSuccess in your career in thenew millennium nacessitates rm
commitment, vision, managerialability to solve problem at your
place of work and continuous
upgradation of professional skills
in your eld. This is besides

your career.
u Whatever be your choice,it is necessary to identify andexplore the opportunities that are
available.
u To innovate and createopportunities for your career
enhancement is also necessary
With regard to the selection
of carrer, it is claried that the
careers included here may not
be the last word on being the top
ten ones. We have been primarily
guided bt the criteria of popularityof the careers, views of career
counselors.
Success in realizing your

A proper appreciation of the contents and
prospects of the various professional programmes
will help each candidate to make the best choice
of his/her course of study. If you plan and prepare
well, you can make a wise decision at the time of
counselling for admission.
Owing to space constraint, the information given
below is indicative and not exhaustive.
Engineering and Technology
disciplines
Candidates have to rst decide on what discipline
to choose from the various courses offered inengineering. What suits me the best is the critical
question each one should ask. The choice should
be made taking into account all relevant factors
including the candidates aptitude. One should be
carried by the labels of the discipline.
One should remember that the curricula and
syllabi of any B. Tech. programme dwells on the
theoretical background, involves diverse aspects
with an analytical approach and focuses not only
on construction, operation and performance, but on
design as well.
Higher order intellectual activities in design
are among the important objectives of graduate
level education in engineering and technology.
The duration of the engineering and technology
programmes is four years. Architecture, however,
is a ve-year programme. Graduates in engineering,
technology, or architecture have ample scope for
further studies. Those who prove their merit in the
GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) can
pursue postgraduate programmes with scholarships
from the Central government.
Aeronautical Engineering
Sky is the limit is perhaps literally true of
this discipline. In modern terminology aerospace
engineering is more popular, since it embraces
both aeronautical and astronautical areas. The
professional demands would touch both aircraft
and spacecraft. You may work on machines ranging
from gliders to space shuttles.
Often considered a challenging eld in
engineering, the discipline deals with the design,
construction, testing, operation and maintenance of
both commercial and military aircraft. Manufacture
of aircraft is yet another domain. Research and
development is an integral part of the discipline,
especially when one works in space exploration or
defence systems. For pursing this discipline, one
must have an innovative mind, an eye for detail and
a willingness to take up challenges.
There are opportunities for higher education
and specialisation in areas such as aerodynamics,
structural design, ight propulsion, navigational
guidance and control systems, avionics,
instrumentation, radar and radio communication,
aerospace management, and space technology. Job
opportunities are mostly in the public sector. DRDO
(Defence Research and Development Organisation),
HAL (Hindustan Aeronautics Limited) or NAL
(National Aeronautical Laboratories) and the
defence forces are some of the examples.
Biotechnology
Biotechnology is dened variously. It may
involve any technological application that uses
biological systems, living organisms, or derivatives
thereof, to make or modify products or processes
for specic use. The impact of biotechnology
will be felt in every sphere of human activity

including agriculture, industry, medical treatment,
and environment. New species of plants, new
dimensions in preventive medicine and medical
treatment, pharmaceutics, insecticides, hormones,
manure, animal husbandry, cloning, transplantationof embryos, pisciculture, immunology, genetics,
and many other areas will be inuenced by this
interdisciplinary eld of study and research.
The growth in biotechnology is closely linked
to the development in genetic engineering that
involves the directed alteration of genetic material.
Substances like human insulin, growth hormone
and human interferon (a natural virus-ghting
substance) have been produced this way.
Before jumping into a programme inbiotechnology, we should realise that this is
primarily an area of research work and innovation.
It does not suit those who always want to keep
themselves to the beaten track. R&D departments
in universities and research units under CSIR,
ICMR, ICAR, Department of Science and
Technology, Department of Atomic Energy and
large private industrial groups offer opportunities
for the right persons. The possible emergence of
KPO (Knowledge Process Outsourcing) in a big
way would open new opportunities.
Automobile Engineering
This involves the activities of design,
development, manufacture, and maintenance of
automobiles. The rise in the number of vehicles
necessitates the services of qualied professionals
in large numbers. Modern technology including
electronics and computer application in automobiles
makes automobile engineering a highly specialisedarea. Even though this branch is often considered
as a specialisation in mechanical engineering, the
content and texture of the auto discipline makes it
distinctive. The curriculum touches varied areas
such as classication of vehicles (on the basis of
body, load, wheels, nal drive, fuel used, axles,
position of engine and steering transmission),
thermodynamics, two stroke and four stroke petrol
and diesel engines, auto lubrication, strength of
materials, auto electrical engineering, vehicle
dynamics, automotive chassis and suspension,
instrumentation and control systems, tribology,
product design and assembly, automation, auto
air conditioning, alternative energy sources for
automobiles, heat transfer and instrumentation,
vehicle transport management, automotive pollution
and control, vehicle body engineering and safety,
automation in manufacturing, micro processors
and micro controllers, and computer graphics. Job
opportunities are in automobile manufacturing
plants, auto workshops, design ofces, defenceservices, and marketing organisations.
Chemical Engineering
It deals with the design, construction, and
operation of plants and machinery for making
such products as acids, dyes, paints, varnishes,
soap, drugs, plastics, fertilizers, processed food,
and synthetic rubber by adapting the chemical
reactions discovered by laboratory chemists tolarge-scale commercial manufacture. The chemical
engineer must be familiar with both chemistry and
mechanical engineering. Control of environmental
pollution and maintenance of dairies are some of the
other areas where the services of chemical engineers
would be used. Job opportunities are available in
petroleum reneries, pharmaceutical industry, as
well as various other industries manufacturing the
products indicated above.

of this interesting interface. Clinical physiology,
biomedical uid dynamics, transport operations
in living systems, linear systems modelling
in physiology, digital techniques in analysisand modelling, circuits and instrumentation,
computers in medicine, medical physics, medical
instrumentation, biorheology, biomedical materials,
lasers in biomedical sciences, and biostatistics are
some of the subjects.
There are only a few colleges that handle this
subject even at the national level. Biomedical
engineers usually work in research laboratories,
medical centres and manufacturing plants. Those
with an innovative mind have opportunities in
evolving new styles in instruments. Maintenance
of equipment supplied to medical institutions is
another important area.
Computer Science & Engineering
Computers have entered the everyday life
of people in a big way even in underdeveloped
countries. This discipline deals with the design and
construction of computers, and computer-based
systems. It involves the study of hardware, software,
and communication. The curriculum focuses on thetheories, principles, and practices of relevant areas of
traditional electrical engineering and mathematics,
and applies them to the problems of designing
computers and the many kinds of computer-based
devices. It also deals with software development
in general and development of devices that have
software components embedded in hardware.
Programming, networking, databases, and the
Internet form elements in the curriculum. It spans
a wide range, from its theoretical and algorithmic

administration. It integrates data, equipment,
personnel, and problem-solving methods in
planning and controlling business activities.
Information technology provides the means for
collecting, storing, encoding, processing, analysing,
transmitting, receiving, and printing text, audio, or
video information.
The term IT encompasses the methods and
techniques used in information handling andretrieval by automatic means. The emphasis is
more on technology than on information. IT
experts play a key role in selecting hardware and
software products appropriate for an organisation,
and integrating those products with organisational
requirements. The responsibility of installing,
customising and maintaining the products for the
organisations computer users also vests with the
IT professionals. Installation of networks, network
administration and security, design of web pages
and e-mail facilities, development of multimediaresources, and timely upgradation of the system
come in the domain of the IT professional.
Job opportunities are available in various
organisations including multinational companies.
Database administrators, system analysts, system
programmers, software developers, information
system managers, electronic data processing

opportunities in a wide variety of manufacturing
industries, process control units and design
organisations. They can also work as mechanical
engineers, production engineers, and technical
managers.
Printing Technology
The invention of printing marked a great leap
in the history of human civilisation. Printmaking
is a process for producing multiple original pieces
of a text or work of art. Printing is science, art,
and industry at the same time. The induction of
electronics, computer application, and information
technology has revolutionised the printing industry
in recent times. There is tremendous growth in
the industry, and it is likely to grow further in the
coming years.
Printing materials, print design and products,
typography and design principles, different kinds of

Hot New CoursesAs the marketplace for human resources
becomes more exciting, demanding customizedskills for every industry and job t, a new breed of
courses that deliver these goods with much ease is
emerging. General management degrees have been
discarded for industry specic programmes like
retail management, automobile design and tax and
regulatory management. Engineering and technical
education has been fused with the pure streams to
give courses like Earth Sciences, Pharmacovigilance
and Fire Technology. Humanities are being
rediscovered with renewed interest to develop
communication abilities in the form of social work. Also, what was once considered mere play is now
entering the classroom if only to teach students that
creativity could be harnessed for loftier goals a la
Game Design and DJing.
What follows is a comprehensive list of the latest
courses being offered by some prominent institutes
across the country for you to choose from, whether
it is for professional advancement or mere resume
enhancement.
Over the past ve decades, healthcare delivery
has increasingly become technology driven be it
the development of new drugs, vaccines or medical
devices and even diagnostic techniques. A modern
age hospital offering modern medical care involves
the extensive use of a variety of equipments and
technologies be used efciently and managed
properly by well trained clinical engineers.
Thus, the primary role of a clinical engineer is tocarry out activities related to equipment management
such as review of equipment specications before
purchase, installation and testing new equipment,
routine safety testing as well as preventive and
break down maintenance and many other related
activities, Furthermore, since clinical engineers are
directly placed in the clinical environment, they get
to know the technological problems faced in clinical
situations, and hence can also have an important
role in initiating the development of new medical
technologies and evaluating them. M.Tech. (ClinicalEngineering) programme has an innovative approach
of combining formal engineering training with hands-
on clinical exposure. It is a unique undertaking and
will exploit the innate strengths and facilities of the
three institutes namely Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute
for Medical Sciences& Technology (SCTIMST),
IIT-Madras and Christian Medical College (CMC),
Vellore. Selection of candidates will be of two and-
a-half years duration. The students will study and
train at all the three participating institutes.
The program trains engineers to manage and
ensure safe and effective use of technology in heath
care delivery points. A unique feature of the course
is clinical attachment which exposes the students
to the clinical environment as they undertake an
exercise aimed at identifying 25 problems faced in a
typical clinical environment and propose innovative
solutions to these. One or more clinicians would be
assigned to the students as mentors, who would meetthem on a regular basis to carry out their continuous
assessment.
Students focus on identication of problems
typical to clinical engineering practice such as
equipment management, safety evaluation and
preventive maintenance and come up with possible
solutions. After the programme, you could be be
placed in a hospital or with the medical devices
industry. The career path, comprises of supervised
management of clinical engineering duties at the
entry level, followed by continuous upgradation(this could be facilitated by a higher degree such as
a Ph.D), to training and research level jobs in the
hospital\. He healthcare delivery at the benchmarked
quality standards are a given and this will be the
driving factor for such professionals.
Eligibility: BE/B.Tech, a valid GATE score.

A recent high prole murder in Delhis NCR
region has more or less ripped apart the reputation
of Indian Police and peoples faith in them is at an all
time low. The urgent need of the hour is to reinstall
this faith and infuse competence and efciency in
this crucial arm of the state. Keeping this agenda
in mind, doing a course in police administration
makes sense. It trains one with the competency and
ethics required to join Indian police or paramilitary
services.
Panjab University has launched a masters
degree in police administration. The programme
was conceived with a view to expose the participants
to the recent changes in the global, national and
local environments and their implications for police
administration, explains
B.S Ghuman, Dean,Faculty of Arts, Panjab
University. It also aims to
provide knowledge about
universal developments
in the theoretical and
practical aspects of police
administration: to enable
the students to understand
and appreciate police
administration from a
citizens perspective: to
acquaint the participants
with latest technology
in the eld of police
administration: and to
provide an opportunity to
make use of information
technology, quantitative
research methods and
computer applications
in this area. The studentswould be trained in
disciplines such as public
administration, police
psychology, sociolog
research methodology, law, criminology, forensic
science, police procedures and investigation
techniques.
The course will provide trained and professionally
qualied candidates a direct recruitment in the
Police Departments of various States and unionTerritories as well as various paramilitary forces
viz., BSF, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF),

Fund raising was best left to the directors of the
company or the management, once upon a time.
However, in an increasingly competitive world
where non prot organizations are becoming more
active, maintaining fund ow is even more critical
to survival. To bring some semblance of discipline
and consistency to the critical
task of fund resourcing, SP
Jain has started a four-monthcerticate programme in
Resource mobilization. Its
about moving from a haphazard
way of collecting funds to a
more organized way of doing
so that is more aligned to the
purpose of the organization,
explains Nirja Mattoo, head
of the programme at SPJIMR.
Traditionally, on governmentalorganizations would resort to
need based events, programmes
or then individuals to raise funds
every time they would exhaust
their exiting kitty. This is
obviously not a very sustainable
arrangement and the large
organizations especially are
now relying on professionally
trained individuals to do the important job of
resource generation. The idea is to convert what
was hitherto, an unorganized and sporadic activity
to a more organized activity, Regular donors,
international agencies and fund mobilization
through regular programmes are taught.
The eligibility criteria are-a masters degree or
45 per cent marks in bachelors in any of the Social
Science disciplines. Bachelors degree in any
discipline with at least 50 percent marks. Nominated
candidate should be regular employees of policedepartment/paramilitary forces and possessing the
above academic qualications. There are a total of
46 seats. The fee for open students is Rs.10, 000 per
semester plus other charges as per University rules.
For nominated/in service police personnel the fee is
Rs 15,000 per semester.
For those who do not want a regular course,
several universities also offer a distance learning
course in police administration. A two year
masters degree in police Administration is offered
by Annamalai University, TamilNadu. The medium
of instruction is both English and Tamil. One canbe a graduate in any subject, in order to meet the
eligibility criterion.
Eligibility: Graduate in any subject (for distance
courses), Graduation (PU). Course Fee: Rs 20,000
pa. Starting Salary: No estimates available.

enthusiastic response wmong the employers who
are ready to snap up any trained personnel. Most of
the candidates are sponsored by their organization
although there is hesitation on their part owing
to the risk of losing this newly trained Perons.
Ironically, that is exactly what happens when these
professionals come out of the training, they land
up multiple job offers and often move, always to
a better position, prole and pay. Although, the
course was pioneered by SP Jain, it is now being
offered by a number of prominent B-schoolssuch As the Mudra Institute for Communication,

Bhubaneshwar and Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. A
change in the attitudes of NGOs and the social
sector at large means a rush of opportunities for
these new professionals.

Great dialogue is a window into the soul of
your character. It sounds real, conversational.
The audience should feel as if it is prying on a
very natural interplay between the characters.
Therefore, the screenplay outlines every aural,
visual, behavioural, and lingual element required
to tell a story.
Whistling Woods International, Mumbai, offers
a one-year programme in screenwriting. The course
kicks off in July this year. In the rst semester,
close to 35 hours would be devoted to foundation
training in six other disciplines (direction, editing,
cinematography, sound, acting and production) will
be given. The rest of the semester will be devoted
to specialized instruction in screenwriting, during
which students will nalise a premise for a story,
and submit a 15-page treatment for a screenplay.Students are expected to begin the second semester
with the revised draft of the 15-page treatment
which they have worked on during the one-month
break. During this semester, this will be developed
through several drafts of the step-outline into a full-
edged screenplay. The one-year programme will
concentrate on compact in depth training in feature-
lm screenwriting lead by in-house faculty, with
additional inputs from eminent guest lecturers.
Film and Television Institute of India. Pune also
offers a one-year PG Certicate course in Feature

or enhancement of skills thereby leading to a growth
in designation. The exact starting salary cannot be
quoted and varies greatly from one individual to
another, However, as a freelancer, a good script

constant ow of work as well instead of venturing
out on their own.
