WELCOME TO EVERGREEN

A MESSAGE FROM OUR SPONSORPolygon is dedicated to positively contributing to each city’s economy and quality of life by creating welcoming neighbourhoods for new residents. As such, we are delighted to be continuing the tradition of presenting the Arts Education Program at Coquitlam’s highly regarded Evergreen Cultural Centre.

Since 1980, the Polygon family of companies has built over 25,000 homes throughout the Lower Mainland, and has upheld a lasting commitment to making valuable contributions to the communities in which we build.

The Arts Education Program at Evergreen Cultural Centre provides a tremendous opportunity for elementary and high school students in the Tri-Cities area to gain an appreciation for creativity by enriching their education through art, design and theatre. Experiencing the performing and visual arts in an environment that fosters the imagination and creative spirit, while being friendly and accessible, has been proven to be of great benefit to a child’s education.

We hope your students enjoy and learn from participating in the Arts Education Program this year.

Each year the Art Gallery at Evergreen (AGE) presents thought-provoking exhibitions featuring the work of local, national and international artists from across all visual arts disciplines and cultural backgrounds.

Our diverse and comprehensive program is designed to present your students with unique opportunities to experience exceptional works of art in their own community.

SETH: DOMINIONExhibition Dates: July 25, 2015 - October 18, 2015Available Dates: September 14, 2015 through to October 16, 2015

DOMINION is the elaborate, ever-expanding, work-in-progress of the renowned Canadian cartoonist Seth. An imagined place combining elements of numerous early modern Canadian cities, DOMINION captures the spirit of the booming small metropolis at a time of community boosterism and growth that, to the contemporary eye, can seem at times quaint and alien. As with all of Seth’s works, DOMINION is infused with melancholy and an air of ambiguous nostalgia tinged with a healthy dose of cynical humour.

Fall Session Creative Labs: My Clay Place, and Up Close and Far Away

PERFECT GEOMETRYLaurie Papou Exhibition Dates: October 31, 2015 - January 3, 2016Available Dates: November 2, 2015 through to December 11, 2015 (Clay classes only available until November 27, 2015)

Perfect Geometry features a collection of six oil paintings on wood by Vancouver artist, Laurie Papou. Three of the 1.5 x 1.5m works depict cross sections of trees felled in Stanley Park by a 2006 windstorm, alongside three that depict the irises of each one of the eyes of the artist and her family. In the formal relationship between the cross section of each log and the circular nature of the irises there is something here related to the cycle of life in that two parents’ eyes beget the one of the child and the rings of the tree, which mark time. Laurie Papou is a local artist and graduate of Port Coquitlam Secondary (now Terry Fox Secondary). Fall Session Creative Labs: My Clay Place, and Up Close and Far Away

Spring Session Creative Labs: Family Carpet Ride

NO NAME CREEKZebulon Zang Exhibition Dates: March 5, 2016 - April 24, 2016Available Dates: March 7, 2016 through to April 22, 2016

No Name Creek takes Coquitlam, Zebulon Zang’s lifelong home city, as its starting point and point of departure. The exhibition consists of a collection of large-scale photographs and a documentary film that presents an idiosyncratic depiction of life in Coquitlam. Examining the relationship between centres and peripheries, Zang draws upon his own experiences of these in-between spaces to examine what they say about the city. Through surveying both the physical and cultural landscape, the exhibition moves from specific details to larger social currents, playing between fascination and alienation of a space undergoing rapid and frequently severe development. PAINTING AND PHOTOGRAPHYYehan Wang Exhibition Dates: May 5, 2016 - June 26, 2016Available Dates: May 9, 2016 through to June 17, 2016

Yehan Wang explores abstraction through his painting and photography. Through the systematic application of repetitive brushstrokes, Wang not only addresses abstraction in terms of painterly application, but also how paint becomes the subject of the work. Devoid of the colours that identify the markings made on the painted canvas, Wang’s manipulated photographs take the angles, lines, and textures of mundane bicycles and tubing, abstracting the content through the form and its repetition. Yehan Wang is an established local artist who divides his time between his studios in Singapore and Coquitlam. Winter Session Creative Labs: Learning to Look and Clay You, Clay Me
