PRIMARYEDUCATION

The buildings were designed in an organic, curved form whichis sympathetic to the surrounding woodland and producesvitality and controlled spaces within. The project won the Mid Sussex Design Award, which pays particular attention to designs that focus on high quality and sustainability. The primary school was the first new build parent promoted self governing school in the country, and required a number of innovative solutions to address the aspirations of the clientgroups. The use of Senior’s Hybrid Series 3 curtain wallproduced a light and inviting environment for children to learn and develop within their home village.

The recent refurbishment of the ageing Abbey GrangeAcademy in Leeds integrates subtle shades of timber claddingwith Senior Architectural Systems’ SCW curtain wall andparallel push casement windows. In addition to providinguninterrupted sight lines across the elevation for improvedaesthetics, the parallel push window system facilitates ahighly efficient natural ventilation system by drawing fresh airfrom the bottom of the window and expelling stale air from the top, improving air circulation in the most demandingenvironments. Restricted to 100mm, the parallel pushcasement windows offer greater security and safety.

MARLBOROUGH ROAD ACADEMY


Senior Architectural Systems’ thermallyefficient SPW600 window system was chosen by Urban Vision (a joint venturepartnership between Salford City Council,Capita and Galliford Try) to replace over 100 windows of various sizes andconfigurations, giving the school, whichopened in 1880, a much needed facelift, and making it a more comfortableenvironment in which to learn.

To retain the building’s original Victorianaesthetics, whilst increasing the amount ofdaylight, bespoke vents were fabricated andglazed into SCW+ thermally enhanced curtainwalling over four metres high and 2.2 metreswide with no interim supports.

The robust SD door system, which is fullycompatible with both the SPW600 windowsand SCW+ curtain wall was installedthroughout the school.

SECONDARYEDUCATION

CAMPSMOUNT TECHNOLOGY COLLEGE


Campsmount Technology College was the pilot project for Wates Construction’sinnovative Adapt Schools Solutions designapproach. Following a fire in 2009, the7,500m2 replacement new build cost £10.7 million and was designed with flexible learning in mind.

Aluminium systems provided by SeniorArchitectural Systems were chosen as themost suitable to meet the needs of the projectboth in cost and performance.

The visually arresting design featuresbreakout and break through teaching spacesand flexible classrooms, a large atrium anddance hall with state of the art springboardflooring.

PLECKGATE COLLEGE


Pleckgate Mathematics and ComputingCollege is the first Building Schools For theFuture (BSF) College in Blackburn, and one of a growing number of new schools usingSenior Hybrid Systems.

The innovative £25m school design usesstunning colours to one of the main HybridCurtain Wall facades. Nine huge VerticalLouvre Blades, each made up of fourspecialised extrusions, are fixed through the Curtain Wall System and are finished invarious bright colours. Offering perfect ‘form and function’, the Louvre Blades

both enhance the school’s appearance whilstreducing solar gain.

Pleckgates Hybrid installation consists ofexternal Anodised Aluminium combined with100% PEFC accredited Natural Spruce to theinside. The Hybrid System uses quality‘Engineered’ Timber Profiles, which arefactory produced to give uniform strength,rigidity, size and weight which out-performtraditional Solid Wood Profiles. Internallyglazed, 28mm, high performance DoubleGlazed Units complete the installation.

Series 2 Windows


BROADWATER FARM


An innovative £18 million education facilityhas achieved a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ ratingthanks, in part, to the use of SeniorArchitectural Systems’ groundbreakingHybrid curtain walling, door and windowsystems.

Funded by Haringey Council as part of itsCapital Funding Programme, and believed to be the first of its kind in the UK, the 6,000m2 Broadwater Inclusive Learning

Campus, designed by architects GolliferLangston, amalgamates three schools,including a mainstream primary school andtwo special needs schools, at BroadwaterFarm in Tottenham.

The two-storey school was programmed fordelivery over three phases to enable theexisting schools to remain open during theconstruction process.

LEICESTER COLLEGE


A feature entrance area dominates the unique design of Leicester College, part ofthe Leicester Building Schools for the Futureprogramme (BSF). Constructed by MillerConstruction and designed by Aedasarchitects, Leicester College is just one of a programme of 21 secondary schools in theBSF. The design was based on a T shapestructure, with three skewed teaching wingsprotruding from the longest leg of thebuilding.

Designed with sustainability as a key issue,emphasis was placed on natural ventilationand solar shading. Senior’s SPW600ewindows were chosen for the 12,700m2

building, together with large expanses ofSCW curtain walling. To assist in the solarshading, a large overhang by way of the steelframe was constructed to the south facade.This enabled the designers to achieve thedemanding targets set by the Council forcarbon reduction thereby reducing U-values,improving the quality of natural light andventilation, and reducing heat loss.

UNIVERSITY OF BRADFORD


HIGHEREDUCATION The £6 million facility for the University of

Bradford’s School of Health Studies is part ofa larger, £84 million development to overhauland consolidate the campus in a 50%refurbishment and 50% new buildprogramme.

The architecturally impressive, purpose builtfour-storey GRC clad extension featuresSenior Architectural Systems’ Hybrid timbercomposite curtain wall and casementwindows. Designed to achieve a BREEAM‘Excellent’ rating, the building features adramatically sloping elevation from the firstfloor to the top floor, recessed with a nine

metre tall screen of Hybrid Series 3 CurtainWall. Hybrid windows complement therandom colour shading of the rainscreen skin on adjacent faces, all of which forms acontemporary facade in keeping with theappearance of the stone on nearby buildings.

Being naturally ventilated, the School ofHealth Studies has been designed to meet a challenging sustainability brief. It boasts a high thermal performance and controlledsolar gain, and brings the benefit of naturaldaylight to occupied rooms.

NOTTINGHAM UNIVERSITY BIOSCIENCES BUILDING


HIGHEREDUCATION This unique building was the largest pre-

fabricated straw bale construction projectwhen Rushcliffe Borough Council gaveplanning approval. Timber and straw used inthe construction was sourced locally from theUniversity’s own farmland.

The building has been positioned to minimisesolar gain and interact with its surroundings;the facade design takes its inspiration fromthe natural rhythm of the tree line adjacent to the site, and has achieved a BREEAM‘Excellent’ rating.

Tim Brooksbank, Development Director at the University of Nottingham’s EstateDepartment, said “Bringing high techfacilities into a rural setting, the BioscienceSVMS building is a crucial part of ourdevelopment plans for the Sutton BoningtonCampus and sets the standard for what wehope will be a visionary phase of thedevelopment.”

EDINBURGH COLLEGE OF ART


HIGHEREDUCATION High specification curtain wall and window

systems from Senior Architectural Systemswere installed at the Edinburgh College ofArt’s Hunter Building, to achieve a modernlook that enhances the thermal performanceof the building.

Senior’s systems have helped to improve the thermal performance of the building, asexisting single glazed timber windows werereplaced on the site.

The robust, tubular aluminium SMR900curtain wall system was installed on oneelevation of the building, to flood the interior

with natural light and to ensure that amodern, open feel was maintained for thebuilding’s users.

The SPW600e window systems, meanwhile,were installed across four levels, to upgradethe building and improve the thermalperformance.

Andrew Burridge, of SHS BurridgeArchitects, said: “The new window systemhas made a material difference to theperformance of the Hunter Building and asubstantial improvement to the comfort ofthe occupants.”

BREEAM

BREEAM (Building Research Establishment’sEnvironmental Assessment Method) is the world’sforemost environmental assessment method andrating system for new buildings, setting the standardfor best practice in sustainable building design,construction and operation.

We help architects and specifiers to achieve up to 40 of the 119 BREEAM credits available for newbuildings, by careful specification of the fenestrationmaterial and glass choice from the Senior range ofproducts, enabling fabricators, installers andcontractors to build more sustainable buildings for future generations.

Beyond Senior

Our environmental responsibilities don’t end at the factory door. Our Fabricator training includes waste reduction programmes and training on productefficiency and insulation requirements in use, to makesure that current building regulations are met andexceeded where possible.

For specifiers we offer a RIBA approved CPD seminaron ‘Designing Sustainable Fenestration Systems’ which gives advice on how, with careful design andspecification, a BREEAM excellent rating can beachieved.

BREEAM (Building Research Establishment’s EnvironmentalAssessment Method) is the world’s foremost environmentalassessment method and rating system for buildings, with250,000 buildings with certified BREEAM assessment ratingsand over a million registered for assessment since it was firstlaunched in 1990. The system sets the standard for best practicein sustainable building design, construction and operation.

BREEAM credits

A BREEAM assessment uses recognised measures of performance,set against established benchmarks, to evaluate a building’sspecification, design, construction and use.

Credits are awarded across ten categories, based on the outcomesof the building assessed. The credits are then combined to providea single score, achieving either a Pass, Good, Very Good, Excellentor Outstanding overall BREEAM rating.
