    Education is a basic human right, vital to personal and societal development and

    well-being.

    //As an integral part of its CSR practices, Tata Steel has from the very beginning

    maintained a strong focus on improving educational facilities in its areas of

    operation thereby increasing the literacy rates in these regions//.

    (Tata Steel supports the right to free and compulsory education for all children up to the

    age of fourteen years and supports initiatives to improve literacy levels amongst adults.)

    //The Company also wishes to promote the study of science, to promote understanding

    of its product and help to develop qualified people for industry in the future.//

    (Tata Steel has been actively promoting excellence in education in the schools of the

    steel city by extending the Tata Business Excellence Model to create an Education

    Excellence Model. It has instituted the Dr. J. J. Irani Education Excellence Award to

    encourage all schools to serve children better. This includes a cash prize for the

    school.)

    (The Company donated a building on a 71-acre campus to the Xavier Institute for Tribal

    Education (XITE) in an endeavour to assist less privileged tribal students improve their

    quality of life. It also assists the Xavier Labour Relations Institute (XLRI), a premier

    management institute in Jamshedpur.)

    (Tata Steel has influenced the integration of tribals in the economy in a less obvious and

    immediate way by propping up the education of tribal children and youth of various ages

    at different stages in their academic career.)// Some of the initiatives include:

    y Informally run balwadis (crches/nurseries) for infants and toddlers.

    y Financial assistance and sponsorships.

    y Sponsorship of two tribal student every year by TCS at the Tata Institute of Social

    Sciences.

    y Project Sahyog helps tribal students to develop self-esteem and plan their future.

    y Assistance and support for The Xavier Institute for Tribal Education near

    Jamshedpur.

    y Financial support worth Rs 25 lakhs to more than 493 meritorious tribal students

    each year since 2004.

    y Fifty matriculate students identified every year for coaching that prepares them forhigher studies.//

    (Affirmative Action was declared a statutory Company Policy in 2006 and this serves as

    an important guideline in Tata Steels interventions in the field of education.

    EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION)

    ( twelve primary schools have been identified for support near Dhamra Port in 2008-09.

    Twenty-four teachers will provide academic support to 480 students.)

    (Grow Smart with Tata Steel

    This project is aimed at encouraging learning and self-development in students from

    remote areas of India. It also focuses on spreading knowledge through vocational

    training for adults.)

    (Initiatives in Sports

    Tata Steel has helped to create an atmosphere conducive to sports promotion and also created

    champions who have made the Country proud. In India, Tata Steel pays special attention to the

    sporting activities for youth at the State and National levels.)

    (Tata Steel is in the process of extending its support in a formalised way to Hockey, the

    traditional sport of Jharkhand and the National sport of India. In addition, training of the

    Bhutan Archery Team is a part of the CSR activity of Taj Tashi, Bhutan.)

    (TATA FOOTBALL ACADEMY

    The objective of Tata Football Academy is to nurture and

    train budding footballers in the most scientific way with the sole purpose of improving

    the standard of Indian Football and be a nursery for producing outstanding players for

    the Indian National Team.)

    (TATA ARCHERY ACADEMY

    The main objective of this academy is to help talented youth to realise their full potential

    and achieve excellence in Archery through sustained scientific training. It is committed

    to creating value by continually improving Archery Cadets' performance at national and

    international level.)

    (Tata Athletics Academy

    The basic objective of Tata Athletics Academy is to provide

    the mainstream of national athletics with a perennial pool of young athletes trained and

    oriented to international standards. The strategy is to "Catch Them Young", to give them

    the best in terms of training with modern techniques, tactics, psychological as well as

    physical conditioning and related inputs to make them medal winners in the

    International arena.)

    The main objective of Tata Steel Adventure Foundation

    (TSAF) is to induct people from all walks of life to the thrills and wonders of adventure

    sports, thereby developing a healthy rapport with environment and nature)
