The Faculty of Education is currently developingnew programmes aligned with the policy Minimum
Requirements for Teacher Education Qualifications(2011). Some of the new programmes will be offered in2014. We will keep you informed through the press.
1. BACHELOR OF EDUCATION (BEd) DEGREEHOW DO I GAIN ADMISSION TO THE BEd DEGREE AT UJ?
In order to gain access to the BEd programme, applicants arerequired to have the appropriate combination of recognised
National Senior Certificate (NSC) subjects as well as certainlevels of achievement in these subjects. The minimum entryrequirements for studies, as legislated by the governmentdo not guarantee a prospective student admission to thisprogramme.
Preliminary admission is based on the results obtained in thefinal Grade 11 examination. Actual admission is based on thefinal Grade 12 results.
Specific admission requirements for the Faculty ofEducation:
A valid National Senior Certicate (NSC) with admission fordegree purposes
The subjects to be used in the calculation of the APS are theprescribed seven subjects for the NSC.
The achievement rating of Life Orientation is divided by 2 incalculating the APS.
If an applicant has included more than the minimum ofthree electives in his/her NSC the four compulsories and thebest three electives are used.

Thebursaries are designed to help meet the national need for highcalibre teachers in priority areas.

Besides the usual merit bursaries of the University, the Facultyof Education also offers bursaries to students performing well

The Orientation Seminar in January is compulsory.Prescribed periods of school experience must be completedin approved schools during the time of study. Students maybe expected to complete these periods of practical teaching
during university holidays. The university reserves the right toplace students in schools in line with the training needs.
3. BED HONOURS DEGREEADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:
A bachelors degree plus a teachers diploma (at least 480credits at level 6) including Education 3 OR
A four-year bachelors degree, including teacher training (e.g.
BA(Ed) or BEd) (at least 480 credits at level 6) ORA recognised teachers diploma or diplomas equivalent to afour year teachers diploma (at least 480 credits at level 6) OR
A recognised teachers diploma and a three-year NationalTechnical Certificate (T3) (at least 480 credits at level 6) or anequivalent thereof.
ADDITIONAL SELECTION CRITERIA:Students should provide proof of relevant academic
competence, namely 65% average in the majors of a priordegree or in the case of a diploma, a 65% average for all thesubjects/modules.
Educational Linguistics: At least one modern language atsecond year level.
Technology Education: Technical qualifications, 120 credits atlevel 6.

The BEd Honours programmes strive to consolidate anddeepen students expertise in Education as well as theiracademic and practical competence in the specialization withinEducation. It also strives to develop research capacity in themethodology of Education as field of study.
BEd HONOURS IN EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY(the closing date for application to this programme is 31 May
2013)The same entry requirements as for the other BEd Honoursprogrammes apply in this programme but with the followingadditional selection criteria:
In order to be selected for this degree a candidate must havePsychology 3 and Education 3.
Candidates who apply for this degree will undergo a selectionprocess. The selection process is based on previous academic
achievement, personal skills, interpersonal skills, the ability towork in a team and the potential to learn the necessary skills tobecome an effective counsellor.
The BEd Honours programme in Educational Psychologyserves to deepen and consolidate students expertise inEducation as well as academic and practical competence inEducational Psychology within Education as a field of practice.It also serves to develop research capacity in methodology and
techniques of Education as field of study.

The purpose of the practicum is to develop core competenciesin the practical field of school counselling.
4. MED DEGREE / MPHIL DEGREEADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:
Prospective candidates will have obtained a BEd (Hons) OR
Prospective candidates will have obtained a suitable fouryear professional bachelors degree plus a teachers diploma/teaching qualification and work experience in the proposedfield of specialisation OR
Prospective candidates will have obtained a teachers diploma/teaching qualification, plus an appropriate honours degreeand work experience in the proposed field of specialisation.The Education knowledge of such candidates will be assessedby the Head of Department and the subject expert in theproposed field of specialisation and a reading programme maybe prescribed prior to registration.
ADDITIONAL SELECTION CRITERIA:
Academic performance: students need to have attained aminimum of 65% in their previous degree. If 65% was notattained, prior learning and experience in the field may betaken into consideration and students could be allowed toregister based on a pre-registration research proposal which isaccepted by the academic department in which the student willbe registering.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAMME: MED DEGREE
Full dissertation: A dissertation on an approved topic in thefield of Education. All students must attend a short learningprogramme in research methodology OR
Coursework and minor-dissertation: All students must attend ashort learning programme in research methodology.

requirements for obtaining the degree.

5. DEd AND PhDDoctoral study requires a candidate to undertake research atan advanced academic level culminating in the production,defence and acceptance of a thesis. The defining characteristicof the qualification is that the candidate is required todemonstrate high-level research capability and make asignificant and original academic contribution to the field ofEducation.
DOCTOR EDUCATIONIS (EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY)

Applicants ability to communicate both in oral and written
format may be assessed in a screening procedure. Proficiencyin a word processing package and internet use is stronglyrecommended.
PHILOSOPHIAE DOCTOR (EDUCATION)
RULES OF ACCESS
Prospective candidates will have obtained an MEd OR
Prospective candidates will have obtained a teachers diploma/teaching qualification, plus an appropriate masters degree aswell as work experience in the field of study. The Educationknowledge of such candidates will be assessed by the Headof Department and prospective supervisor and a readingprogramme may be prescribed prior to allowing registration.
ADDITIONAL SELECTION CRITERIA
Academic performance: students need to have attained aminimum of 65% in their previous degree. If 65% was notattained, prior learning and experience in the field may betaken into consideration and students could be allowed toregister based on a pre-registration research proposal whichis accepted by the Department in which the student will beregistering.Topics related to the following broad areas may beinvestigated:1.
