Education Programs for Schools

The Cleveland Orchestra’s 2014-15 Education Programs are made possible by:

Dear Educator,

I hear this sentiment expressed over and over again, by people of all ages and walks of life, throughout Northeast Ohio. Since 1918, more than 4 million school-aged children have been introduced to classical music by The Cleveland Orchestra. Educators like you are the key to providing this unique Cleveland experience. For the majority of young people today, school fieldtrips are the first (and often only) opportunity to hear live, orchestral music by one of the top orchestras in the world. Take advantage of all The Cleveland Orchestra’s education programs, because you and your students deserve the best.

• MusiCal RainbOws introduce students in pre-K through grade 1 to the instruments of the Orchestra, one at a time.

• EduCaTiOn COnCERT FiEld TRiPs introduce your students to the world-renowned Cleveland Orchestra in historic Severance Hall. Audio, print and web-based preparation tools are free to participating schools.

• FRidaY MORninG COnCERTs are offered to high school students at a special student discount rate. These concerts, which are open to the general public, give students the opportunity to hear The Cleveland Orchestra in a traditional concert setting.

• TEaChER wORkshOPs give you the tools to engage students in active listening and arts learning.

• lEaRninG ThROuGh MusiC PaCkaGEs connect music to science, math, language arts and history, helping you integrate the arts into your classroom curriculum.

• suPPORT FOR sChOOl MusiC PROGRaMs includes student tickets, ensemble coaching and school music advocacy tools.

Share The Cleveland Orchestra tradition with your students – it’s an experience they will never forget!

Sincerely,

Joan Katz NapoliDirector, Education and Community Programs

Links to StandardsCleveland Orchestra Education Concerts align with the 2014 National Standards for Music Education, and Ohio’s New Learning Standards for fine arts in music. Education Concerts provide critical thinking opportunities for students to describe, analyze and evaluate music and music performances; understand relationships between music, other arts, and non-arts disciplines; and understand music in relation to history and culture. These concerts also address specific learning outcomes for grades 4-8, e.g., classify instruments by the four families of the orchestra; listen, identify and respond to music of different composers and world cultures, and more.

Free Classroom ResourcesSchools attending Education Concerts receive free classroom resources to help prepare students for the concert experience, including: a music CD of concert selections; Teacher’s Guide (in PDF format, available at clevelandorchestra.com); The Score newspaper for students; and an introductory video, “Get Ready for The Cleveland Orchestra” (available October 1 via clevelandorchestra.com. To access, click on Education and Community at the top of the page, click on “For Schools & Teachers” and then video under “classroom resources for educators”).

Teacher workshops are also available (see pg. 9).

ARRIVAL INSTRUCTIONS: Plan to arrive 25 minutes before the concert. Detailed instructions will be sent to contact persons to share with your transportation department.

INCLEMENT WEATHER/ SNOW POLICY: If your school is closed due to inclement weather on the day of the scheduled concert, call (216) 231-7349. Your school will receive a credit toward a comparable concert within the season. You must contact us within 7 business days of your cancelled concert to receive and schedule an alternate concert.

REFUND POLICY: Refunds are only issued for orders cancelled 2 weeks prior to the concert. There are no refunds for unused tickets.

These narrated, 60-minute concerts are performed by the world-renowned Cleveland Orchestra in historic Severance Hall. Concerts explore the artistic, historical, cultural, and social context of music while introducing students to basic musical concepts and orchestral repertoire.

The United States has long been described as a “melting pot” of cultures, with people coming to our shores from every nation around the globe. Assistant Conductor Brett Mitchell and The Cleveland Orchestra will explore the music of several composers who immigrated to this land of opportunity in the 20th century, and how these new citizens contributed to the eclectic musical “melting pot” of American classical music.

This concert will explore the inner world of music and the outer reaches of the universe with a program called “Sound Science.” Musical instruments inhabit a world of sound all their own. We’ll learn how the various instruments of the orchestra make their unique sounds, and how various composers use those sounds in their music. Then we’ll journey beyond the bounds of our solar system with music that is encoded on the Golden Disc of NASA’s Voyager Spacecraft (a 12-inch gold-plated copper disk – a time capsule of sorts – containing sounds and images selected to portray the diversity of life and culture on Earth, and left in space in order to communicate a story of our world to extraterrestrials!). The music of Beethoven, Wagner, Vivaldi, Ellington, and Williams all come together for this special concert of sound exploration and musical adventure.

The positive impact of the arts on student academic achievement is well-documented – The Cleveland Orchestra’s Learning Through Music (LTM) program takes the research and puts it into action!

LTM is a nationally recognized program that fosters the use of music and the arts to support general classroom learning through a combination of curriculum, resources, teacher professional development workshops, and classroom visits by members of The Cleveland Orchestra. Developed in 1997, LTM has served a variety of Cleveland-area schools by designing unique partnerships that meet individual school’s needs and goals. LTM Teacher Workshops* and curriculum packages are available for a nominal fee.

*See page 9 for more information on LTM Teacher Workshop.

Learning Through Music Curriculum Packages are aligned with Ohio New Learning and Fine Arts Standards and are designed to empower classroom teachers to present curriculum in new and innovative ways. Students delve into great pieces of music while reinforcing listening and writing skills, learning about culture and history, and creating their very own musical compositions. Packages, complete with supplemental books and CDs, are available to grade K – 5 teachers and music specialists. To purchase a copy, please email [email protected].

The highly acclaimed Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra (COYO) provides a unique pre-professional experience for musicians in grades 7-12. Players rehearse weekly and per-form in Severance Hall, are directed by a member of The Cleveland Orchestra’s conducting staff, and receive coaching from Cleveland Orchestra musicians. Membership is by competitive auditions held in May. For information, please call the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra at (216) 231-7352 or visit www.ClevelandOrchestraYouthOrchestra.com.

The Cleveland Orchestra Youth Chorus (COYC) was founded in 1991 to help raise awareness of choral music-making in the schools of northeast Ohio and to encourage more students to continue their choral activities through college and into adulthood. Like their colleagues in the Youth Orchestra, they are in grades 9-12, from over 30 schools and communities, and are selected by competitive auditions. The COYC has the opportunity to perform concerts in the greater Cleveland community as well as on stage at Severance Hall alongside their colleagues in the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra. For information, please call the Chorus Office at (216) 231-7374 or email [email protected].

The Cleveland Orchestra Children’s (COCC) and Preparatory Choruses (COCPC) help students develop their leadership skills through music which help strengthen their future musical experiences. The Cleveland Orchestra Children’s Chorus, founded in 1967, and comprised of students in grades 6-8; performs regularly with The Cleveland Orchestra and Cleveland Orchestra Chorus throughout their subscription and holiday season. The Preparatory Chorus led by Suzanne Walters and comprised of students in grades 5-8, collaborates with the Children’s Chorus in two concerts each season. Students are chosen through auditions held in the spring. For information, please call the Chorus Office at (216) 231-7374 or email [email protected].
