This year’s training will provide informaonal sessions on not only legal tools for helping students but also programmac supports available in South Carolina schools that support their academic achievement. School Finance Update: The issue of adequate funding for our state’s public schools has been widely debated in courts, the legislature, and among cizens. At this year’s training, you’ll receive basic informaon on how our finance system works and on budget cuts and other changes that are impacng students and schools. Special Educaon: Working with students with disabilies involves learning complex laws to help parents fully access their student’s protecons. This year, we will provide training on developing effecve Secon 504 plans, ulizing other applicable laws to help students, and offer other praccal ps and tools. Bullying: Studies have shown that nearly one in five students in an average classroom is experiencing bullying in some way. Bullying of students has a wide-ranging impact on the climate of the school and community. You will receive praccal training on how to work with and advocate for students who are being bullied. Charter Schools: These independent public schools are growing in number and type across our state. Charters are able to provide educaon in a more flexible and regulaon-free environment. At this year’s training, charter school officials will provide an overview of opportunies available to students. Other Resources: In these challenging economic mes, where can students and families turn for educaonal supports? You will receive an up-to-date overview of programs and services available to students in South Carolina school districts, as well as a review of changing educaon policies that impact the clients you serve. *Please note that parcipang private aorneys, excluding presenters, will be required to accept a pro bono case from the SC Bar Pro Bono Program within the 12 month following this CLE. Any aorney, who is contracted to accept a case and fails to fulfill his obligaon, will be charged the balance owed for the price of a SC Bar CLE on their dues statement with the funds going to the SC Bar.
