HOW TO APPLY

HELPING LOW-INCOME STUDENTS EXPERIENCE THE MISSION The Mission’s Adopt-A-Class program was spearheaded in 2005 to help low-income children to take part in the fun and learning that a field trip to Mission San Juan Capistrano can provide. The Mission welcomes 74,000 school children annually; however, with school funding being limited, a field trip is often too expensive. The Mission is grateful to private donors and grants that make this program possible. To get involved or donate, visit missionsjc.com or call Barb Beier at (949) 234-1323. Make a donation today!

To apply for the Mission’s Adopt-A-Class Scholarship, please mail, fax or email a letter addressed to the Mission’s Group Bookings, Attention: Adopt-A-Class with the following information:

• School contact information

• Letter on school letterhead, stating your needs including number of people in group, type of programming desired and if transportation is needed

• Details of the percentage of students on the free or reduced lunch program

• Your contact information

After this information is received and reviewed with the Executive Director, a determination of funding available versus the funding needed by your school is evaluated. We cannot consider your school until the complete proposal is received. A letter will be sent to you with the decision of whether the Mission is able to award all, part, or none of the field trip. The decision is based largely on the proposal’s completeness and percentage of students receiving a free or reduced cost lunch.

The vision behind the “Adopt-A-Class” scholarship program is to create a pool of restricted funds that allows the Mission to provide free tours based upon a school’s financial need. Teachers from Title 1 (low income) schools can contact the Mission’s Group Bookings at (949) 234-1306, and request an “Adopt-A-Class” Tour. Teachers will be asked to provide in writing information to support that their school does not have the necessary funds to enjoy a field trip to the Mission. If the school is interested in securing funding for one of the education programs (such as Journeys to the Past, Making the Grade or Mission Matters), or transportation, please indicate that as well.

The Mission Preservation Foundation encourages all schools to book tours in the Fall when there is more availability. To date, over 42,000 students have been adopted by generous supporters. It is recommended that Adopt-A-Class scholarship program applications be sent in no later than January 1st. Adopt-A-Class tours are not able to be scheduled for the months of May and June.

LEGACY OF SAINT SERRA

EXHIBITDebuting September 21Mission San Juan Capistrano is honored to debut its newest exhibit opening this fall in time for the September 23 canonization ceremony making Blessed Father Serra a saint.

The Legacy of Saint Serra exhibit will be on display in the recently conserved historic Sala building which dates back to the Mission’s founding period in the 1790s.

The exhibit will explore Serra’s early life as a scholar, his journey to the Americas, his missionary training in establishing nine of the 21 California missions, his legacy and his significant role at Mission San Juan Capistrano.

Artifacts that will be on display in the exhibit include a statue of Father Serra by Juan de Avalos (1986), 18th century Spanish painting of Our Lady of Refuge, the Patroness of both Californias, the Mission’s original baptismal shell used by Serra, a reproduction of the cross Serra wore and was buried with, and more.

The exhibit will be on display daily in the historic sala from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
