History of Schoolhouse Rock

Schoolhouse Rock has a unique history for a musical. Unlike other musicals, Schoolhouse Rock started off as an animated series on ABC. It was broadcast on Saturday mornings from 1973 to 1985, during which it won an Emmy and left a lasting impression on an entire generation. The show is the brainchild of David McCall, who noticed that his son memorized lyrics of rock songs, but had trouble memorizing multiplication tables. After Bob Dorough record-ed the first song,“Three is a Magic Number”, Tom Yohe realized that the songs would work well with animation, and the TV show “Schoolhouse Rock” was born. Though ABC stopped broadcasting the series in 2001, new songs have been written in light of presidential elections and other modern movements.

SCHOOLHOUSE ROCK LIVE! was originally produced by Theatre BAM at Café Voltaire in Chicago, Illinois. Premiering August 26, 1993, the show sold out for eight months before moving on to other theatres such as the Atlantic Theatre and The Lamb’s Theatre in New York City, New York.
