Abstract Edward P. Hutchison (1906-1990) was a well-known educator and demographer. Born in Maine, Hutchinson studied biology at Bowdoin College and later earned a Ph.D. at M.I.T., where he became interested in vital statistics and population studies. He won several post-doctoral fellowships, including a year at the Library of Congress and two Guggenheim Foundation fellowships. He taught at Harvard, spent a few years in government service, and then settled at the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a professor of sociology from 1945 to 1976. Hutchinson used his natural science training to promote research in the social sciences, and helped establish the Population Studies Center at Penn. He was interested in international immigration and was recognized for his work with immigration statistics. He was also intrigued by population theory and the history of population policy. His writings reflect his range of interest and expertise. Hutchinson was active with many organizations involved in the study of population, immigration, and ethnic groups, and he worked with government agencies, departments, and congressional committees on population and immigration issues. He also served as a trustee of The Balch Institute for Ethnic Studies. Hutchinson was married to Alice Louise Forbes, raised a daughter and son, and lived for more than forty-five years in the suburban Philadelphia village of Strafford, Pennsylvania. The collection includes Hutchinson’s teaching materials, manuscripts, articles and reviews, research notes, reference files, and correspondence related to his professional endeavors. There is also personal correspondence, diaries, scrapbooks and more than seventy photographs.

Background note Edward Prince Hutchinson was born January 3, 1906, in Auburn, Maine, to Agnes Prince and Frederick W. Hutchinson. He attended Bowdoin College, majored in biology, was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and graduated magna cum laude in 1927. He earned a Ph.D in biology and public health in 1933 from M.I.T. Hutchinson continued



his studies, as a research fellow of the Social Science Research Council (SSRC), at the University of Stockholm and the London School of Economics from 1933 to 1935. Hutchinson began his teaching career in 1927 as an assistant at Tufts University’s Medical and Dental Schools. He became an instructor in vital statistics at Harvard’s School of Public Health in 1929. Following his SSRC fellowship he joined the faculty at Harvard College as instructor in sociology. He held that position from 1935 until 1940. Hutchinson then spent a year as a fellow at the Library of Congress. From 1942 to 1945, he worked with the National Resources Planning Board (NRPB) and the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS). In 1945, Hutchinson became an associate professor of sociology at the University of Pennsylvania. He remained at Penn for the rest of his career. He was named professor in 1947, and chaired the Sociology Department from 1950 to 1952. He helped establish and direct Penn’s Population Studies Center. During the academic year 1971-1972, he was a visiting fellow at the Australian National University. Hutchinson retired in 1976, and was designated emeritus professor. Distinguished as an educator, Hutchinson was also widely recognized as a demographer. He was a social scientist, and employed statistical methods with population data, especially census data, and promoted research in social sciences in universities and in government. His first publication was Studies of Differential Fertility in Sweden, written with Karl Arvid Edin and published in 1935. His specialty was immigration, and among his works were Immigrants and Their Children, 1850-1950, published in 1956 in the 1950 Census Monograph Series; a report entitled, Predictable Consequences of S. 1932 and H.R. 7700 for the Economy, prepared in 1964 for the Department of State to support legislation that became the Immigration Act of 1965; and The New Immigration, a special issue of The Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science, edited in 1966. Data sources were important to Hutchinson and the quality of data was another subject of his writing. His papers “Notes on Immigration Statistics of the United States” and “Our Statistics of International Migration: Comparability and Completeness for Demographic Use” were intended to help others understand potential and pitfalls. Hutchinson’s work, however, was not limited to numbers; he was also interested in population theory, immigration policy, and history. He received fellowship grants from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation in 1941-1942 and 1956-1957 to work on the history of population thought. That work culminated in The Population Debate: The Development of Conflicting Theories up to 1900, published in 1967. Following his retirement, Hutchinson completed work on a long-standing project with the publication in 1981 of his Legislative History of American Immigration Policy, 1798-1965. In addition to his teaching and writing, Hutchinson was a leader at The Balch Institute for Ethnic Studies. Hutchinson became a member of The Balch’s Board of Trustees in 1973. He was influential in the early course of the Institute, and remained active on the board in his retirement years.



A colleague described Hutchinson as “warm, sincere, congenial and with a merry twinkle in his eyes.” He was valued as a friend, but he maintained a private side. Family was an extremely important part of Edward Hutchinson’s life. In 1940 Hutchinson married Alice Louise Forbes. After the marriage, she dropped the name Alice. They had three children: William, who died as a young child, Joan, and John, all born in the 1940s. About 1943, the Hutchinsons bought a house in Strafford, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Philadelphia. They established roots and never relocated. Louise Forbes Hutchinson died in 1962, leaving Edward with two teenage children. Hutchinson had a close relationship with both his daughter and son, sharing interests in subjects such as travel, stamps, wine, and investments, and also sharing a drive for academic achievement. Joan became a mathematics professor and John became a physician. In 1980, John’s wife gave birth to twins- a girl and a boy- making Hutchinson a grandfather. Although he lived in Pennsylvania from 1943 to 1990, Edward Hutchinson was a man of Maine. Born and educated in the “Pine Tree” state, he maintained regular contact with old neighbors and friends, including Donald Webber, his high school classmate and Bowdoin College roommate, who was an associate justice of the state supreme court. He sent gifts to family and friends regularly, including poinsettias purchased from the flower shop of another high school classmate, at Christmastime. Hutchinson also maintained his family home in West Auburn. The property, which had been owned by his father and grandfather, included some pine woodlands, and over the years Hutchinson received several proposals for selective cutting of the timber. He responded to a proposal in 1984 by writing, “I was born at West Auburn 78 years ago, and roamed through those woods as you can imagine, so I prefer them as they are.” Edward Hutchinson died of heart complications December 16, 1990.

Scope & content Edward P. Hutchinson received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree in 1982 at the 55th Reunion of his Bowdoin College Class of 1927. He was described at that time as a “demographer, historian, teacher, scholar, generous and loyal alumnus.” His papers support that description with documentation of his activities in all those areas, and more. The collection covers Hutchinson’s work and personal life from his post-doctoral studies in the mid-1930s until his death in 1990. There are also a few items, predominately in the Class Notes subseries, that relate to his time as a graduate student. The papers are separated into two series, Professional and Personal. Some letters are in Swedish and a few reprinted articles are in Swedish or German, but the vast majority of the collection is in English. A third series, Photographs, consists of more than ninety images. The Professional series contains course materials and lecture notes for courses Hutchinson taught, both at Harvard in the early 1940s, and at the University of Pennsylvania from 1945 to 1976. It is not known whether Hutchinson taught classes after his retirement. Some folders contain papers dated after 1976, but he may have simply continued to store relevant papers in his course files. This series also includes manuscript materials for his major publications including, Immigrants and Their Children, The Population Debate, and Legislative History of American Immigration Policy, 1798-1965. In addition, there are copies of



articles and papers he wrote, files on the work he edited, information about organizations in which he was involved, research notes and worksheets, reference files, correspondence, and miscellaneous papers. These documents show continuous work in his professional interests until 1990, the year of his death. The Teaching subseries provides a view of Hutchinson’s course preparation, information organization, lecture content, and his work with students. Discussion was important in Hutchinson’s classes. In the preface to The Population Debate, he credited the many students who had taken his course on population theory, “for classroom discussion has been helpful in exploring many topics and bringing out new aspects of the material.” The Manuscripts subseries and Research subseries offer insight into Hutchinson’s approach to work and his style of writing on subjects that had a limited audience. The papers support his reputation as a meticulous researcher. After reviewing Hutchinson’s article “Notes on Immigration Statistics of the United States” in 1959, Conrad Taeuber, Assistant Director, Bureau of the Census, wrote, “Whatever reward you will reap for the work…will come from earnest souls who will at least feel fervent thanks that the job has been so thoroughly and competently done.” Most of the Personal series is correspondence, and about half of the correspondence is with his children, covering a period of twenty years from about 1970 to 1990. The letters reflect close and loving relationships with his daughter and son. The series also includes correspondence with other family members and with old friends. Donald Webber was a high school classmate and college roommate. Correspondence from Webber and his wife covers more than fifty years. The correspondence from Anna-Lisa and Gustav Edin dates from 1964, but is the result of friendships that began with Hutchinson’s work in Sweden in the 1930s. Anna-Lisa’s letters are written in Swedish. The Personal correspondence subseries also reflects Hutchinson’s ties to Bowdoin College and his home state of Maine. The Photographs series consists largely of personal photos. There are some images of gatherings with professional colleagues, but most are unidentified. There is one large group photograph of Hutchinson, his children, colleagues, and friends in front of the L’Auberge restaurant, the site of his retirement dinner in 1976. There are views of West Auburn, Maine and of Hutchinson’s home in Stafford, Pennsylvania, as well as photos sent by friends in Sweden. The most recent photographs are family gatherings, images of Hutchinson with his daughter, son, in-laws, and twin grandchildren.

a. Teaching, 1935-1982, n.d. This subseries includes teaching material from Hutchinson’s time as an instructor at Harvard and as a long-time professor at the University of Pennsylvania. Materials include Hutchinson’s course outlines and lecture notes, as well as administrative materials such as class lists and grading forms. The courses range from introductory sociology to advanced graduate seminars. Hutchinson was noted at Penn for Methods in Social Research (Sociology 549,649, and 650), Sources and Evaluation of Demographic Data (Sociology 666), and his seminar on International Migration (Sociology 677). Both a title and a course number typically identify the courses. Folders are labeled with both, and are organized in course number order. Many papers, however, have only a course number, and course numbers and content seem to have changed during Hutchinson’s tenure. Materials for one course number often include papers, especially reading lists, identified with the number of another course. There are also student papers and dissertation proposals, which have been organized by name of student. A few dissertation proposals are supplemented with correspondence about the progress of the project. Hutchinson was a favored member of dissertation committees. In May of 1961, Dean Ruth E. Smalley wrote, “I feel somewhat apologetic in writing you because we have called on you so many times for help with doctoral dissertations of our students. I can only say that what you contribute both to our students in your classes and to the committees working with them on dissertations, is so valuable that we keep coming back for more.” One folder contains reports and correspondence regarding the “Norristown Seminar.” This was an interdisciplinary research seminar for graduate students at the University of Pennsylvania in the 1950s under joint supervision of the History and



Sociology Departments. The seminar was a result of recommendations from Penn’s Behavioral Research Council, in which Hutchinson participated, and was partially funded by a grant from the Ford Foundation. There are also materials from the Lenape Club from the 1940s and 1950s. This club was a predecessor of the Faculty Club of the University of Pennsylvania. Lenape Club materials include fancily decorated announcements of meetings that typically featured presentations by faculty members or guests. Some of the Lenape Club announcements are oversized. b. Manuscripts, 1941-1990, n.d. The Manuscripts subseries includes drafts of Hutchinson’s writings that were published or that were intended for publication. There are manuscripts of papers and journal articles, as well as of Hutchinson’s books. Documents range from a few pages to over a thousand pages in length, and include preliminary handwritten versions, typewritten working drafts with his edits, and for his Legislative History of American Immigration Policy 1798-1965, there is a galley proof. Most manuscripts are undated, but the time period of his work can be inferred from other information in the collection. c. Articles, Reviews, and Talks, 1936-1983, n.d. This subseries contains Hutchinson’s writings, other than books, usually in final form. Most of the articles are reprints. Some are final versions of unpublished papers. The reviews include book reviews that were, or may have been, published. There are also reviews of manuscripts, some of which were submitted by colleagues seeking Hutchinson’s comments and suggestions, while others were reviewed at the request of publishers. The two grant applications were reviewed at the request of The Canada Council, the potential funder of the proposed projects on immigrants in Canada. The information on Hutchinson’s talks range from rough notes to the full text of a presentation. The talks were generally on immigration issues, and the dates of the talks range from 1943 to 1981.

d. Editing, 1962-1970, n.d. Hutchinson had two significant editing projects. From 1960 to 1968, he edited the Immigration Research Digest, which was a publication of the American Immigration and Citizenship Conference (AICC) initially, and from 1965 under the joint auspices of the AICC and the Population Study Center of the University of Pennsylvania. Materials of the Immigration Research Digest are predominately administrative, including correspondence with contributors, book publishers, and subscribers, and some financial papers. Although Hutchinson’s work on this project began in 1960, the earliest papers are dated 1962. Hutchinson also edited a special issue of The Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science, entitled The New Immigration, published in September, 1966. The documentation of this project is mainly correspondence with contributors, and focuses on the content and development of their articles. The New Immigration



included an article by Senator Edward M. Kennedy regarding the Immigration Act of 1965, and this subseries contains some correspondence with Kennedy and his staff. e. Research, 1933-1979, n.d. Hutchinson created abstracts for the source material used in many of his research projects. The abstracts were organized alphabetically by author and contained notes on the works of each author. Hutchinson kept his abstracts in binders and maintained duplicate sets, one in his office and the other at home. When he made revisions, he usually (but not always) revised both copies. This subseries includes the two versions of his alphabetical abstracts because there were a number of differences. There is also a separate set of abstracts related to his Guggenheim Foundation projects. There is some duplication of information between the Guggenheim abstracts and the previously cited abstracts, as well. There is a fourth, and much smaller, set of abstracts connected to his Swedish studies. Hutchinson also maintained biographical information on many writers of population theories. A special forty-seven page section of Biographical Notes at the end of his book, The Population Debate, includes some of this information. As with the abstracts, there are two versions of the biographical notes in this subseries. The Research subseries includes papers from his work on a State Department project in support of the Immigration Act of 1965. There are also research notes for Hutchinson’s Legislative History of American Immigration Policy, 1798-1965; worksheets for calculations of estimates for his paper “Estimate of Foreign-Born Population from a Given Annual Immigration”; and two boxes of notes, reports, and other papers associated with his work on the Interagency Task Force on Immigration Policy. The task force project was a joint effort of the departments of Justice, Labor and State in 1978 and 1979. In addition, there are oversized worksheets, some of which seem to be associated with Hutchinson’s research for his book Immigrants and Their Children. f. Conferences, Committees, and Associations, 1938-1990, n.d. Hutchinson participated in many organizations and events. In some cases, he held leadership positions. He was secretary of the Section on Social and Economic Sciences of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) from 1936 to 1944. He was a director and officer of the Population Association of America (PAA) during most of the period from 1939 to 1955. He served on the Behavioral Research Council of the University of Pennsylvania. He was active in the Social Science Research Council’s Committee on Migration Differentials in the 1950s. He was a member of the board of directors and chaired the research committee of the American Immigration and Citizenship Conference (AICC). In other cases, Hutchinson was simply an attendee at conferences on immigration, demography, or other population matters.



This subseries includes an assortment of papers from Hutchinson’s involvement with the organizations and events. There are agendas, meeting minutes, newsletters, correspondence, conference papers, and reports. The material on the Behavioral Research Council documents efforts in the early 1950s to foster research in the behavioral sciences at the University of Pennsylvania. The papers from the Social Science Research Council’s Committee on Migration Differentials reflect Hutchinson’s attention to research detail as they include his concerns about the methodology used by other committee members in a major study. Although his comments influenced some revisions to the final report, the acknowledgements by committee chairperson Dorothy Swaine Thomas, in the published version of Migration and Mental Disease: A Study of First Admissions to Hospitals for Mental Disease, New York, 1939-1941, by Malzberg and Lee, included the statement, “Additional methodological comments, which bear on problems of migration differentials in general, were received from E. P. Hutchinson, and will be considered by the Committee for inclusion in extended form in the forthcoming revision of Social Science Research Council Bulletin 43, Research Memorandum on Migration Differentials.”

g. The Balch Institute for Ethnic Studies, 1973-1990, n.d.

Hutchinson’s interest in immigration and the foreign-born made him a natural ally of The Balch Institute. He became a member of the board in 1973. He also donated books, journals, pamphlets, and other periodicals to The Balch Institute library. This subseries contains papers from the meetings of the Board of Trustees, some financial reports, executive reports, and general correspondence. There are proposals for The Balch’s opening exhibition and admission charges. In addition, papers regarding the performance of the architects of The Balch Institute’s building and a 1988 report on the results of a capital fund-raising feasibility study are also included.

h. Correspondence, 1934-1989, n.d.

The Correspondence subseries is primarily incoming correspondence. Letters written by Hutchinson are included, but they are a small part of the total. Correspondence is arranged alphabetically, and generally by the name of the corresponding person or organization. Some correspondence, however, is identified with the subject; for instance letters of recommendation for students or colleagues, or letters concerning Hutchinson’s books, Immigrants and Their Children and Legislative History of American Immigration Policy, 1798-1965.

i. Reference, 1881-1984, n.d.

The Reference subseries contains Hutchinson’s collection of articles, papers, reprints, and offprints written on subjects of interest. Colleagues and friends wrote many of the papers, and many include a note of compliments from the author. The oldest document in Hutchinson’s papers is in this subseries. It is a 1881 pamphlet written by Robert Dale Owen, and entitled “Moral Physiology; or a Brief and Plain Treatise on the Population Question.” The papers and reprints are organized alphabetically by author. There are also card files. Some of the card files are identified with a specific project or subject such as Sweden, the Guggenheim project, or his Legislative History of



American Immigration Policy, 1798-1965. The cards have brief notations of book or article references. Some cards are organized by author and some by subject. One card file is an alphabetical author file, which was a quick reference for his collection of reprints.

j. Forms, 1930-1980, n.d.

This subseries contains sample forms. Hutchinson collected these forms as a part of his research, and there are also references to forms in his teaching materials. One folder contains immigration forms from Sweden. The remaining forms are U.S. Census forms, from 1960 to 1980, and forms from the INS from the early 1940s.

k. Miscellaneous, 1932-1990, n.d. The Miscellaneous subseries includes a collection of news clippings from the 1940s to 1989. The clippings are articles on population, immigration, and related topics. There are also book reviews of his Legislative History of American Immigration Policy,1798-1965.. The subseries also contains a number of papers for which the author is not identified. Some of these are from the NRPB and some are dated during the time Hutchinson worked in that organization as senior research technician. It may be assumed that he had some involvement in writing the reports, or in the underlying research, but it is not certain. There are also papers and clippings from a folder labeled “Ethnic Materials,” some news releases from the Canadian Minister of Employment and Immigration, and a world population map from 1945.

Series 2. Personal, 1923-1990, n.d. (Boxes 60-67+)

a. Correspondence, 1926-1990, n.d. Personal correspondence consists of both incoming and outgoing letters to friends and family, as well as some correspondence concerning banking, insurance, investments, and other personal business. The letters are arranged alphabetically by the name of the correspondent. About half of this subseries is correspondence with Hutchinson’s daughter Joan (also known as Joey) and son John. Almost all is incoming, with the exception of two folders of letters Hutchinson wrote in 1971 and 1972 while traveling and while living in Australia as a visiting fellow at the Australia National University. There is also correspondence with Dorothy McCabe, Hutchinson’s sister, and with Donald W. Webber and his wife, Lucy. Webber was one of Hutchinson’s oldest friends, a classmate at Edward Little High School and his roommate at Bowdoin College. Letters from Sidney and Lucie Hutchinson include reports of expenses for the family home that Hutchinson maintained in West Auburn, Maine. Two folders of correspondence relate to Bowdoin College. Most of it concerns fund-raising. Hutchinson was a regular contributor to the college, frequently donating shares of stock. An early contribution was used to establish a special fund for students who found themselves in financial trouble. Money was distributed at



the discretion of a dean. During the 1967 campaign, his class’s 40th anniversary year, the class representative wrote to Hutchinson, reminding him of a recent reunion conversation when Hutchinson had asked to be informed if the class quota was not achieved. Since it wasn’t, Hutchinson made an extra contribution to reach the target. Hutchinson’s generosity was not limited to his alma mater. Another set of letters is from a friend of his children whom Hutchinson supported with a loan during the friend’s college years. When the loan was repaid, however, Hutchinson returned the check and wrote, “I much appreciate your thoughtfulness, but could not accept the refund from you…I had long since forgotten about it…as you perhaps suggest in your letter, you can think of helping out someone in the future.” b. Class Notes, 1926-1937, n.d. This subseries consists of notes that seem to have been taken when Hutchinson was a student. Specific courses are not clear from the notes, but the subjects include sociology, statistics, and zoology. From the dates, which often do not include a year, the notes seem to be from Hutchinson’s graduate courses and courses he must have taken while an instructor at Harvard. c. Diaries, 1933-1983, n.d. The Diaries subseries includes nine diaries, seven engagement calendars, and a notebook. The earliest diary begins July 22, 1933, the day his ship leaves the U.S. The first entry begins “This isn’t my first attempt in a diary.” Hutchinson was more determined with this effort. Four volumes cover the period from July 1933 to August 1935, which was the time of his post-doctoral work in Sweden and the London School of Economics. One of the other volumes is a record of expenses in Sweden from June 10, 1934 to June 30, 1935. These diaries have entries almost every day. The entries document work, classes, meetings with colleagues including Karl Edin, Gunnar Myrdal, and Dorothy Swaine Thomas, as well as routine matters such as weather, meals, and the times he awoke and went to sleep. Another volume documents a boat trip to Guatemala from June 14 to July 5, 1936. This seems to be a vacation, and his sister Dorothy, called Dot, is on the trip as well. This diary describes the weather, food, and scenery, including seeing colorful birds. Hutchinson also writes about winning bingo games on the ship. The last two diaries cover the periods August 14, 1945 to August 15, 1946 and October 1, 1947 to July 17, 1951. The earlier volume begins on V-J Day. Hutchinson’s entry is brief, but expresses relief that “war was over at last,” and notes “impromptu celebrating around the village.” The entries in these last two diaries are generally shorter and much less regular than the other diaries. There are engagement calendars from 1965 and the years 1978 to 1983. These simply list appointments and other events without comments. The subseries also includes a small pocket notebook in which Hutchinson recorded a variety of personal notes. There are historical references, important numbers such as family telephone and social security numbers, vocabulary, restaurant addresses and



telephone numbers, financial citations for income tax, and other notes. Access to the pocket notebook is restricted until 2055. d. Scrapbooks, 1933-1943, n.d. There are three scrapbooks included in this collection. Two are in typical scrapbook binders. These scrapbooks primarily contain newspaper clippings. There are clippings about Hutchinson’s wedding in 1940 and the announcement of his Guggenheim fellowship in 1941. There are also clippings regarding his parents’ 50th wedding anniversary. There are clippings from Swedish newspapers from the 1930s. Many of the clippings are about population topics, some of which relate to Nazi Germany. There are also a number of comics primarily “by Dahl.” One scrapbook item not from newspapers is an invitation to dinner at the White House with Mrs. Roosevelt in 1943. The third scrapbook included in this subseries is a volume from the 1860 census, in which various articles and illustrations have been pasted. The origin and purpose of this scrapbook is not known. e. Miscellaneous, 1923-1988, n.d. The Miscellaneous subseries includes a number of personal items such as Hutchinson’s 1923 diploma from Edward Little High School, his 1927 degree certificate from Bowdoin College, a 1971 honorary degree certificate from the University of Pennsylvania, and the certificate designating Hutchinson emeritus professor in 1976. There are also several of Hutchinson’s passports. Alice Louise Forbes Hutchinson’s degree certificates from Smith College and Bryn Mawr College, and a passport, are also in this subseries. In addition, there is a collection of ship, hotel, and wine labels. There is no accompanying documentation, but it seems that the collection is primarily from Hutchinson’s 1933-1935 travels while doing post-doctoral research. There are labels from a Guatemala hotel as well. Two of the German wine labels have notations, one “too sweet,” and the second, a Moselle wine, was noted, “1934” and “very good.” Notes on wine labels may have become something of a family tradition. In the Personal correspondence subseries, an occasional letter from Hutchinson’s daughter or son includes a wine label, often with a note.

Series 3. Photographs, 1933-1990, n.d. (Box 68) This series consists of seventy-seven photographs and one color slide. The photographs include an image of Hutchinson as a young man, several images with colleagues at his retirement dinner and other functions, images of his home in Strafford that were sent by visitors, and a number of images in his later years with family members, including his grandchildren. There are also photocopies of nineteen Forbes family photographs that were returned to the donor. The photocopies include images of Hutchinson’s wife, Alice Louise Forbes Hutchinson,



and a number of other Forbes family members. Most of the photographs are undated.



Separation report There is an 11-page separation list in the collection folder. The list includes books, journals, pamphlets, newsletters, and government publications separated to the library. Three flyers from Philadelphia-based book publishers were separated to the society’s Ephemera Collection.

Processing note Edward Hutchinson maintained files at both his office and at home. To maintain the original order these files were not merged during processing. Duplicate files were removed, but some papers that were similar, but not duplicates, were retained. For example, the Research series includes two versions of both research abstracts and biographical notes. Hutchinson updated these records over time, and many of the updates were recorded in both sets of files. Some revisions, however, were made to only one set. Because of the differences, both sets are in the collection, but it is not known which set was kept in the office and which set was at home. Some papers were originally housed in ring binders that were moldy. Papers were removed and the moldy binders discarded. One box containing manuscript papers was moldy. The papers were removed and the box was discarded. A few other items were cleaned for mold. The processing of this collection was made possible by a generous grant from the Phoebe W. Haas Trust.
