SUMMARY
Title Research of Health Information Standardization
Key Words Standardization, Health Information, EHR, NHII
Institute Korea Health Industry
Development InstituteProject Leader Jae-Keun, Kong
Associated
Company
Project Period 2004 . 12 . 1 - 2005 . 5 . 31
Purpose- Health informatization not supported by national health information
standards results in isolated, disparate, and diverse health information
systems, which makes unable to share health information. National health
information standards enable to reduce the high cost and the duplicate of
effort to maintain individual standard of each institution and to increase
competitiveness of health information industry.
- The standardization effort for the health information is not long. There is
no practical comprehensive standardof health information except for the EDI
standard for the claim of the medical insurance. It is essential to support
the activities of specialties of medical information standards in a systemic
and continuous manner and ensure the health information standards.
- The purpose of this study is to informatize the health information at
national level based on the need of health information standards as above.
Methodology- The first standardization stage among three stages of health information
focuses on the development of vocabularies for public health centers, public
hospitals, and hospitals of 200-300 bedsand the standardization of products
identification code
- At the first stage, the standardization of health information proceeded in 10
specialized domains as following; medical care, health care, nursing,
diagnosis, procedures, laboratory, medical materials, medications, oriental
medicine, health statistics, and each domain organized a working groupof
specialties.
- Existing national standards and studies of health information standards
were reviewed and the standards targeting public health centers and small
and medium size of health institutions were developed.
- 14 -
- On the occasion of no existing national standard of health information,
international standards of health information were reviewed, modified, and
completed for public health centers and small and medium size of health
institutions of Korea.
Results- Medical Terminology
Establishment of a concept table and a synonym table based on UMLS
2005AA
Total 38,664 collected terms were reviewed and classified into 5,024
concepts and 6,982 synonyms
- Healthcare Terminology
Creation of 1,595 terms of health care
Creation of 681 concepts of health care domain referring to UMLS
- Nursing Terminology
Establishment of a concept table with 3,055 records
Establishment of a synonym table with 276 records
- Diagnosis Terminology
Standardization of English and Korean diagnostic terms for EMR
- Procedures & Proceedings Terminology
Establishment of a concept table with 3,788 recordsof the classification of
operations and procedures
Code mapping between ICD-9_CM codes and EDI codes
- Laboratory Terminology
Mapping LOINC codes and EDI codesusing UMLS: 7,508 records
LOINC codesof English components and Korean components, EDI codes,
and Korean/English abbreviations: 7,516 records
Synonym table: a synonym table of components, 7,516 records
Mapping table of LOINC codes and EDI codes using UMLS: 7,516 records
- 15 -
- Medical Materials
Standard code (15-digit): 5-digit of manufacturer number and 11-digit of
products number
Medical materials database : the specification of standard code
- Drugs
EAN code as a powerful candidate for the standard code of drugs
ATC of WHO as a therapeutic effect code standard
Definitions of drug item: dosage form, route of administration, unit of
quantity of the chief ingredient, package type
- Oriental Medical Terminology
Collection of vocabulary systems and decision making of a vocabulary
structure for oriental medical dictionary
Creation of a vocabulary dictionary of concepts, codes and relations
- Health Statistics
Selection of 916 statistical terms for the standardization, establishment of
a index system for the vocabulary of health statistics, and classification of
9 domains and 74 sub-domains
