2 Overview Cat® Composer Service Technician Tool
Cat® Composer Service Technician is a stand-alone, diagnostics program which allows
limited adjustment of predetermined service parameters, real-time monitoring of service
points and the ability to access the machine diagnostic log. This is intended for field or
dealer set-up. An exclusive OEM identifier feature prevents unauthorized access or
service and protects unique software Intellectual Property.
Development of Cat Composer Service Technician was based on Cat® ET (Electronic
Technician). Where Cat ET flashes Cat® aftermarket code, Cat Composer Service
Technician flashes OEM aftermarket code. When a Cat dealer services an OEM product,
ET is used for machine information on Cat content, and Cat Composer Service
Technician is used to get information to service OEM content. Cat Composer Service
Technician requires the same communications adapter as Cat ET.
Cat Composer Service Technician is a tool installed on a Windows based personal
computer. It interfaces with the ECM through a Cat®
Communications Adapter to allow
connection to an ECM. A graphical interface makes this Windows based software quick
to learn and easy to use. Separate pull-down menus for each function enhances the ease
of use of the software. The version and identification of your ECM is automatically
retrieved by the software, and displayed on a summary screen when you start the
program.

following web address:
https://oemsolutions.cat.com/CustomControl
The information shown on the web page is particular to a customer/dealer having
authorization to the page.
Loading software onto an ECM is commonly referred to as flashing the ECM. This
feature is available in Cat Composer Service Technician through the icon all the way over
to the right with the red arrow entering ECM. When hovering over the icon, it states the
feature as WinFlash.

7 Appendix C – Tool Trouble Shooting
7.1 Problems connecting to an ECM
To correctly run Cat Composer Service Technician, the setup looks like the following:
The computer has the software installed, license subscription and registration completed.
The computer has the cabling for the Communications Adapter connected to it and the
other side of the Communications Adapter is connected to the Service Tool Connector.
The Service Tool Connector has wiring that connects up to power, the keyswitch and the
ECM. Power is typically sent to the Communications Adapter if the disconnect on the
machine is set to allow the machine to be on. The keyswitch is typically wired that when
it is on, the ECM is powered on and connected.

7.2 CA3 – Communications Adapter 3 Error Troubleshooting
If the message “Unable to load DLLs for communication adapter” appears while using
the CA3 (Communications Adapter 3), perform the following steps:
1. Uninstall CA3 Toolkit through Programs/Features (Windows 7 & 8)
2. Reinstall the toolkit through CA3 Toolkit standalone installation
Or
Through the service tool installation package
7.3 Problems when Terminating Resistors are Missing
When there are not 2 terminating resistors on the CAN line, the following message is
displayed. The message is the same as when the ECM does not have power.
7.4 Problems when the ECM is not an OEM ECM
ECMs have firmware inside of them indicating that they are an OEM ECM. This is done
and checked to make sure that software intended for an OEM ECM is flashed onto an
OEM ECM.
Cat Composer Service Technician is made to be used with OEM ECMs and Cat ET – Cat
Electronic Technician is made to be used with Cat ECMs. The engine ECMs are always
Cat ECMs. The other ECMs used on a project are dependent on how they are serviced.
If a CAT ECM is attempted to be connected with Cat Composer Service Technician, the
following error dialog appears. Messages like these help protect users from flashing the
wrong ECM with the wrong software.
The OEM ECMs and displays that are made to be used with Cat Composer Service
Technician are the following:

If unsure whether the above is really indicating an incorrect type of ECM, go to the
WinFlash ( )area. In the WinFlash area, the error message looks like the following:
If those error messages are seen, then the tool that should be used is ET to work with
those ECMs. The other possibility is the ECM that was meant to be interacted with the
tool was incorrectly picked and the service connector connected to the ECM needs to be
found. There can be more than one service connector on the machine.
7.5 Incorrect Location Code
A Location Code is used to distinguish between ECMs when multiple identical ECMs are
on the same data link. This is a hardware wiring configuration to the ECM. If the
Location Code does not match, the message below is shown. This message is shown to
protect the ECM from being flashed with the wrong software.

Another ECM with the correct location code must be selected or another flash file with
the correct location code must be selected.
NOTE: It is also possible when the machine is initially being wired, that this message
appears because of a wiring issue. Please refer to the table in this document on Location
Code Pin Out (7.3.2).
7.5.1 Example – Location Code Issue
In the screen shot below, the requested file to be loaded into the ECM has a Location
Code of 2.
In the screen shot below, the software flash file currently loaded on the ECM has a
Location Code of 4 and the hardware pin out is set to 4 (1). The flash file that has been
requested to load (see above) has a Location Code of 2.

Since there is a Location Code conflict, the software cannot be loaded onto the ECM.
This is done to protect from having the wrong software loaded onto an ECM.
NOTE: The Location Code ID shown under the ECM Values (1) shows how the
hardware is set. The hardware is set for a location code 4.
7.5.2 A4M1 Location Code Pin-Out
If Location Code is being used, J1-32 must be grounded. Location code is an option
used to distinguish ECMs so that when flashing ECMs it notifies the user before
overwriting a software flash file with an incorrect software flash file.

This is the pin out used for Location Code for an A5M2. Location code is typically not

7.6 Turn off Ability to Power Communications Adapter through USB
The Communications Adapter 3 (317-7484) comes with software that can be installed on
a Windows personal computer to aid in flashing/programming firmware updates and for
configurations.
The Communications Adapter 3 has a couple of ways that it can be configured. It can be
configured to be powered by both the computer and the Service Tool connector or only
through the Service Tool Connector. There are fewer issues if the communications
adapter is powered just through the Service Tool Connector. It is highly suggested to
change to this configuration. This setup can be changed through running a utility on the
Communications adapter application to USB Power Off.
