What You Must Know About Marijuana Addiction
Marijuana—commonly called pot or weed—remains the most commonly used
illegal substance in the United States. It is a well-known fact that there are many
recreational users of marijuana, teens included. Adolescents tend to try out new
things, and many experiment with this particular illicit drug. While marijuana is not
as addictive as other drugs like cocaine and heroin, this does not mean it does
not have an addictive potential. Marijuana abuse can lead into a full-blown
marijuana addiction, so users must quit or seek help before they develop a
dependency.
Understanding Marijuana Addiction
Many drug users underestimate marijuana because it is not as ‘hard’ as other
illegal substances. However, this does not mean that pot is not addictive.
According to the research of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), it is
estimated that nine percent of marijuana users become addicted. There is higher
risk of Effective Marijuana Addiction Treatment for people who started using
the drug at a young age, as well as for those who use on a daily basis.
The addictive nature of marijuana can also be attributed to what it contains. The
drug consists of more than 400 chemicals, and one of these is delta-9-
tetrahydrocannabinol or THC—the drug’s main active chemical. The strength of
the drug (and its effects) will depend on the amount of THC included. Compared
to the 1980s, marijuana now has a higher THC content.
Marijuana Addiction and Its Effects on the Brain
Marijuana withdrawal symptoms are not as serious compared to those of other
drugs. These include sleeplessness, reduced appetite and irritability. The
withdrawal symptoms may seem mild, but the effects of marijuana addiction
(Kg6LMI6QU3) on the brain are serious. As a psychoactive drug, weed alters the
way the brain functions. The drug specifically targets the cannabinoid receptors,
which are found in the areas of the brain that affect learning and memory, among
others. Thus, a long-term marijuana user can experience difficulties learning
something new and completing tasks which demand strong focus and
concentration.
Effective Marijuana Addiction Treatment
Marijuana addiction can be successfully overcome with professional treatment.
Addicts can opt for outpatient treatment, but inpatient care is most
recommended, especially for long-term users and those with co-occurring
disorders. The treatment deemed most effective is that which makes use of
cognitive behavioral therapy and includes community and contingency
reinforcements, as well as support group involvement.
