Basic Principle of Rota-Sonic Drilling
Axial Force or Feed Force
Vibratory Force
Rotary Force
Two counter-rotating weights Inside the
Sonic drill head create high frequency
sonic vibrations.
Energy @ face of bit achieves localised
displacement to shear and penetrate
Slow Rotation to enhance energy &
penetration of hard layers
Steady down pressure to aid
advancement

Safety
• Serious finger and hand injuries are common
• Poor guarding
• Manual Handling and Heavy lifting can’t be
avoided
• Rig stability during installation
• Inherently un-safe operation
• Not a career option
• Limited lifting required
• Lighter tooling
• Automatic rod breaking
• Rig guarded
• Remote Operating Panel

Reduction in Waste Arisings
• Rota-sonic drilling method produces in the region of 70% to 80% less waste
arisings – Both drilling flush and spoil.
• Reduces costs associated with: – Handling
– Transporting
– Sampling
– Testing
– consigning drilling derived waste.
• Reduces the risk of cross contamination to both the local environmental and
operatives.

High Quality Samples
• Continuous Core Sample
• Controlled extrusion of
sample
• Safe handling for
contaminated samples
• No dilution/cross-
contamination of sample
• Engineers get to log the facts – Not
interpret the losses
• Make decisions on borehole based on
visual evidence

Rota-Sonic Project Examples
Sellafield Nuclear Licensed Site • Drilled in excess of 300 boreholes both inside
and outside SEP Area
• Drill rigs modified to work on Nuclear Licensed
sites
• System chosen due to:
• Innovative Approach
• Speed of drilling
• Reduction in waste produced
• Cleanliness of drilling system
• Not Subject to Refusal
• Quality of core recovered
• Projects completed include:
• Contaminated Land and Groundwater
Management Project
• HAST GI
• SMF GI

Rota-Sonic Project Examples
EDF, Chinon – Nuclear License Site
• Environmental Ground Investigation
• Ground water Monitoring wells around Reactor
building.
• Part of Decommissioning Works for the site
• Chosen due to:
• minimising risks associated with cross
contamination
• Minimising Dose uptake

Rota-Sonic Project Examples
CEA – Nuclear Licensed Site, France
• Removal of disused 17inch diameter by 6m
deep steel storage vessel’s.
• Buried in ground within concrete
• Used conventional core barrel and specially
designed 18inch corebarrel.
