Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) is a thermoplastic, and as such, its physical properties change with temperature variations. Dimensions, pressure capacity, and stiffness are all affected by temperature changes. DIMENSIONS Like all materials, PVC expands with increasing temperatures and contracts with decreasing temperatures. The coefficient of thermal expansion for PVC is: 3.0 × 10-5 per °F

PRESSURE CAPACITY PVC exhibits increasing pressure capacity with decreasing temperature, and decreasing pressure capacity with increasing temperature.

What is PVC and what are the effects of temperature on its properties.

Effects of temperature on pvc components

• The shape of component changes when temperature is higher than 100°c.

• Ducting is affected as pipes change shape.

• After fixing the joints of pvc components when they get higher temperature it starts leaving spaces and thus air and water can penetrate inside.

• Rusting starts to take place once the pvc is attached by a steel joint and thus peeling and corroding of pvc takes place.

• Cracks are formed.

• The pvc joints are most affected and start to crack, resulting in leaks.

Remedies • Avoid extreme temperature.

• Using substitutes of p.v.c. where higher temperature is prone.

• Conceal pipes with pvc varnish to avoid rusting, peeling and corrosion.

• Use T and L joints made of steel.

• Do not let children play with sharp objects near pvc items.

• Use virgin plastic while making pvc components so that the plastic does not loose shape easily.

Rusty pvc pipe leaks.

Pvc joints loosen up and thus water leaks.

Constantly in touch with high temperature & moisture laden soil rusts pvc pipe.

Pvc door gets tarnished due to temperature and constant moisture.

Pipes start to loose shape and joints loose up.

Pipes crack.

Total breaking of pipes from the middle due to the use to any sharp object and also heated atmostphere..
