Activity
• Each white board is labeled Cigarettes, cigars, pipes and chewing tobacco.
• With your assigned label, you and your group must write down as many possible short term and long term effects associated with that product.
• You have 1 minute!
Review• Cigarettes contain 4000 chemicals
• 200 are poisonous
• 40 are known to cause cancer
• Tobacco use is the #1 cause of preventable death in the US

• Bronchitis• Headaches
• Nervousness • Bad Breath
• Stained Teeth• Hinders endurance

• Heart Burn• Shortness of Breath
• No energy• Coughing
• Dulled Taste Buds• Hairy tongue
• Cold and flu more often

Long Term Effects
• Chronic Bronchitis• Oral Cancer• Emphysema• Lung Cancer• Coronary heart disease
Chronic Bronchitis• a condition in which the bronchi are
irritated. As cilia become useless, tar from cigarette smoke builds up, which results in chronic coughing and excessive mucous secretion of the bronchial tree
Throat and Oral Cancer• Mouth has contact with chewing tobacco
and smoke
• May begin as Leukoplakia
Tracheotomy
Emphysema• destruction of the lung's air sacs. It
requires more effort to breathe with emphysema
Lung Cancer• develops within the lung and moves on
to other organs through the lymphatic system
Coronary Heart Disease
• Effects of Tobacco Use:
• Increased heart rate and blood pressure
• Hardened arteries and decreased blood flow
• Increased risk of heart attack.
There are risks for Non-smokers too:
• Environmental tobacco smoke • (Second Hand Smoke): air that is breathed in that
has been contaminated by smoke.
• This also can cause lung cancer, ear infections in children, asthma, and heart disease.
• Mainstream smoke: smoke exhaled from the lungs of a smoker
• Sidestream smoke: smoke from a burning end of cigarette, pipe or cigar.
“I” Statements
• When you (behavior happening), I feel (your feeling) because (your reasoning).
• You are having Thanksgiving dinner with all your relatives. Halfway through the meal, your uncle, who is sitting next to you, lights up a cigarette.
• How would you feel?
• What would you do?
Your Turn! Activity:
• In your group answer the scenario given to you with an “I” statement.
• Once you have completed that develop a situation with your group where someone is smoking near you. How would you respond?
