Introduction to Electronic Flight Instrument System
(EFIS)
In today’s world technology advances at such a rapid pace that it can be
overwhelming to learn every detail about a specific line of products. This compilation of
avionics and EFIS systems can be a useful tool for those interested in newer systems.
As the flow of traffic around airports increased in the early 1970, all aspects of
flight began to become a lot more complex. To accomplish flight safely, airline pilots
needed a much more accurate picture of their position at all times. They also needed
precise control of the airplane and accurately monitor automatic systems so they could
take over if necessary. This detailed knowledge about the aircrafts situation would have
been nearly impossible to gather from the instrumentation at the time. The average
transport had more than one-hundred instruments and controls. Integrating electronics
was the answer to stop cockpit clutter and allow the pilots to get as much information as
easily as they can. Around the same time, electronic display technology was finally
considered reliable enough to incorporate it into commercial transport aircraft. These new
systems for bigger aircraft were very desirable because they brought an opportunity for
less weight and cost.

An example of an Early 737 cockpit
Electronic displays have replaced many of the traditional electromechanical and
analog instruments that provide flight and power plant information. These displays also
augment and/or combine the functionality of conventional systems, such as radios and
navigational equipment.
An Example of Part 25 Integrated Cockpits
2
Electronic displays may be installed in several configurations. A basic electronic
display may provide only one flight or powerplant parameter, while more sophisticated
systems integrate many parameters on one electronic display. For example, an integrated
primary flight display provides several parameters such as attitude, heading (direction),
airspeed, and altitude all in one display instead of using four separate instruments. Recent
installations show a trend toward a higher degree of integration.
Generally, an integrated cockpit/flightdeck combines a number of flight guidance,
airplane systems, and situational awareness controls and display functions into a
minimum number of interdependent electronic displays. All essential navigation and
communication functions, integration may also include displays and control of airborne
surveillance, aircraft systems and engine systems. An EFIS system is very flexible and
adapts well to changes with any flight systems. If an EFIS is out of date it can simply be
updated with newer software.
More than 30 companies are involved in the making of EFIS. This reference guide
is an introduction to some of those companies and the systems they currently offer.

Definitions of common instruments and terms:
EFIS: Electronic Flight Instrument System, a flight deck instrument display system in which the display technology used is electronic rather than electromechanical. Normally consist of PFD and MFD.
Glass cockpits: flat-panel, liquid crystal displays (LCD)
Steam Gauges: descriptive term of the electromechanical instrumentation
EHSI: Electronic horizontal situation indicator
PFD: Primary flight display, single physical unit that always provides the primary display of all the following: altitude, airspeed, aircraft heading (direction) and attitude located directly in front of the pilot in a fixed layout in accordance with § 23.1321. It may provide other information pertinent to guidance and fundamental control of flight of the airplane, such as critical engine parameters.
ADC: Air Data Computers, avionics components found in modern glass cockpits.
AHRS: Attitude Heading Reference System, 3-axis sensors that provide heading, attitude, and yaw information for aircraft.
5
MFD: Multi-function display, any physical display unit, other than the PFD, used to present various information, on which the layout may be reconfigured.
IFD: Integrated flight display, gives flight information, navigational and situational
informations combined into one single display
