Internal affairs & Intl. co-operationSportSome members have posted very useful input as to organizing volleyball tournaments to the members’ list during the last weeks. This sharing of knowledge and reflections, we appreciate very much, and we encourage all of you to reflect on your own sport, i.e. how may LGBT tournaments be carried out in an even better way, be it a small, be it a big tournament.

At the general assembly in Rome this year, we had a workshop on sports, in which the individual sports met. The board plans to follow up on this workshop at the general assembly in The Haag in March 2009. Therefore, we ask you to send your input to Juha Meronen [email protected] or Lou Manders [email protected], who are the board members responsible for sport.

AdvocacyThe board has decided that EGLSF will not be present at ILGA Europe’s and ILGA World’s conferences in November 2008, because sport is not on the agenda. Instead, EGLSF will attend the EU Sport Forum, to which EGLSF has been officially invited.

In a future newsletter, we will inform you about the outcome of the meeting of the network of Football Against Racism in Europe, which EGLSF attended.

Outgames 200925.07.-02.08.09Come Play with the Vikings at World Outgames 2009 With less than one year to go before the opening ceremonies at World Outgames in Copenhagen from July 25 to August 2, 2009, a truly exciting program is emerging as organizers get ready to welcome the world to the capital of Denmark. There will be competitions in 38 sports disciplines from aerobics to volleyball, a wide variety of cultural activities and parties including film, tango and choir festivals, as well as a human rights conference.

On your mark, get set, go The sports programme is the centrepiece of World Outgames 2009. Including competitions in 38 different disciplines for enthusiasts at all skill levels, it is one of the most comprehensive programmes in the history of LGBT sport.

With 4 full-time staff, 3 part-time associates and hundreds of volunteers, the sports department at World Outgames is working in close cooperation with GLISA, EGLSF, national and local teams, and government agencies to provide first class facilities and logistical support that will make World Outgames 2009 an open, competitive, fair and fun experience for all participants and spectators alike.

Strong support from Pan Idraet Chief among our key local partners is Pan Idraet, the umbrella organization for LGBT sports clubs in Copenhagen. Pan Idraet is a member of EGLSF with many years of experience arranging single and multi-sports events including EuroGames 2003 and the IGLFA world championships in 2005.

Pan Idraet’s experience and strong standing in the community was crucial in getting political and financial support from the city for World Outgames 2009.

And the individual sports clubs in Pan Idraet have taken an active role in planning for the tournaments at all levels from officiating to hosted housing.

Among other things, the efforts of Pan Idraet were instrumental in bringing the IGLA world championships to Outgames. Pan Idraet, with its male and female co-presidents, has over 700 members, 18 sports clubs and is a member of the National Olympic Committee and Sports Federation of Denmark and the Danish Gymnastics and Sports Associations.

The world is coming out in Copenhagen More than sports, World Outgames 2009 is going to be a fantastic celebration of LGBT life. Among the most innovative activities on offer is the OutCities project. The squares and streets of Copenhagen will showcase the best of queer art and culture from major cities around the world. Artists, dancers, musicians and performers from Amsterdam, Melbourne, Mexico City, Rio de Janeiro, Tel Aviv and Denmark’s very own Aarhus will captivate and entertain with music, installations, events and performances covering themes of gender, identity and diversity.

Each of the OutCities will also throw a unique party reflecting the flavour of the communities from which they come. In addition to your sporting event, you can look forward to an exciting week of sightseeing and socializing. Register for World Outgames 2009 before October 1, 2008 and save 20 % or more. For more information and to register, visit their website at www.copenhagen2009.org.

Outreach support program World Outgames 2009, with its varied programs of sports, culture, and human rights conference, offers an ideal forum for exchanging experience and meeting people from all corners of the World.

In order to ensure participation from as many countries as possible, the Outreach program was established. It supports participants from Eastern Europe, Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East, who without support will not be able to take part in the World Outgames 2009.

The Outreach Program aims to support 50 % men and 50 % women including transgender people.

Deadline for applications for the Outreach program is October 1st 2008.

Please go to their webpage for more information, where you will also find more information about Outreach, conditions for receiving support and the application form. If you have questions regarding the Outreach Program, please send an email to [email protected].

Gay Games 201031.07.-07.08.10Registration for Gay Games VIII in Cologne 2010 about to start In a few days this will happen - in October, the registration for Gay Games VIII in Cologne will start. Early registration is highly recommendable, since you will save 25 Euro if you register before the 31st of December 2008.

Until the 31st of December 2008, the registration fee for your participation is 100 Euro plus a registration fee between

40 and 100 Euro, depending on the sport you want to register for. From the 1st of January 2009, the basic registration fee will be 125 Euro. In some sports, the number of participants is limited, so many people will register for those sports at an early time. Therefore, there are two reasons why you should consider early registration.

Already now - almost two years before the games will start - you may find rather detailed information about every single sport on the website www.games-cologne.com. Apart from information about rules and regulations, age brackets, and levels, you will find maps and addresses of the sites, where the tournaments will take place, meaning that you can easily look for accommodation nearby the site where your tournament takes place.

34 sports - 5 cultural events With the addition of sailing, field Hockey and sport shooting there are now 34 sports scheduled for the first week of August in 2010. Also cheerleading was added as a fifth cultural event.

Sailing will be held in collaboration with the city of Roermond in the Netherlands, at the famous nearby Maas Lakes. This is a very popular first-class sailing venue less than an hour’s drive away

from Cologne (the two cities are only 90 kilometres from each other). There will be shuttle buses that connect the cities three times daily.

Field Hockey is another of the new sports. This tournament will be held out in Sportspark Muengersdorf, the hub for sports at Gay Games VIII Cologne 2010.

Sport-Shooting is the third new sport. Rules from the Olympic Games will be used, which stipulate air rifle and air pistol disciplines.

Cheerleading has joined the cultural events at Gay Games VIII Cologne 2010. Dozens of squads and cheerleaders will be cheering on participants and spectators at the various sport competitions and will be seen repeatedly on stages throughout the city. Acrobatic squads and pompon teams from all over the world will be demonstrating their breathtaking skills at the “Cheer Up!” afternoon.

You will receive all news by subscribing to the Gay Games VIII Cologne 2010 newsletter at www.games-cologne.de/en/newsletter.

Atlasz Sport Club

Budapest Splash - the first ever international LGBTQ swimming tournament took place in Budapest, Hungary on August 29-31, organized by Atlasz SC. The tournament was held at Europe’s one of most beautiful pools, on Margaret Island, in a brand new venue completed for the 2006 European swimming championship.

The 45 international and 7 Hungarian participants competed in 50m butterfly, breast, freestyle, back, 100m breast, freestyle, 200m medley 4*50m freestyle relay, 4*50m breast relay, and 4*50m medley relay. Atlasz was happy to welcome swimmers from the Czech Republic and Croatia, besides Western Europeans. Hosted housing was available for all participants.

The beautiful summer weekend included sightseeing by bus, party on a ship on the Danube by Atlasz’ own DJ, disco and a brunch.

Following international badminton, dance, and handball championships Atlasz proved that the club is able and willing to organize almost any kind of sports competition - on a smaller scale for now - and its volunteers are there to support international LGBTQ events. It has also to be stressed that the Hungarian Swimming Association proved to be a

perfect professional partner during the championship.

Atlasz LGBT SC, Budapest, Hungary was officially founded in 2004 but LGBTQ sport lovers have been gathering around their favorite sport since 2000. Atlasz started to hold its own competitions by organizing the well-loved Sport Day in the fall of 2003. Since then, Atlasz members have been participating in many disciplines, in even more countries worldwide, very successfully, we might add. Atlasz has also organized several international championships by now in several disciplines, and in this tense political climate of ours it is also cooperating with all other Hungarian LGBTQ organizations towards achieving acceptance and tolerance towards LGBTQ people, e.g. with sports programs, night runs and street dances in Budapest during Pride weekends. Atlasz has successfully hosted EGLSF AGA in 2006.

Atlasz SC plans to hold its first multisport tournament towards the end of August 2009. Stay tuned for more soon!

Gay sports TV series16 September 2008

MTV’s LGBT network, Logo, started showing a new series Shirts & Skins. The show follows the true-life story of

the San Francisco Rockdogs, a young all-star basketball team who must reunite to uphold their city’s three-generation legacy of international gay games gold medal, and national tournament wins. After their last gold in 2006, the team fell apart, only to be rallied back together by their founders to defend their title at the upcoming National Gay Basketball Championship in Chicago.

EGLSF welcomes the show, and congratulates the authors for mainstreaming sports in the LGBTIQ community.
