It’s now official. The meat subsidy is not here to stay. A clear date has

not yet been fixed to six it. But, the government is determined to throw it out.

This became evident when Central Informatics Organisation (CIO) was directed yesterday to open online registration for citizens.

The online registration of citizens wishing to benefit from the cash compensation would start from September 15.

Deputy Premier and Chairman of Ministerial Committee for Economic Affairs and Rationalising Expenditure Shaikh Khalid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa issued a directive to this effect yesterday.

Shaikh Khalid also ordered the Finance Ministry to start crediting the compensatory sums to the beneficiaries’ account effective October.

Shaikh Khalid maintained the move

to phase out meat subsidy was in line with the directives of Prime Minister HRH Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa.

The latest move is also in line with the agreement reached between the government and the parliamentary committee.

Shaikh Khalid in his statement said the agreement to scrap the meat subsidy was reached during a

“recent meeting”, without specifying any date.

Cash reimbursement received ‘go ahead’ in the absence of other alternatives including ration card submission before end of September, Shaikh Khalid said.

The pre-emptive move enables Social Development Ministry to prepare a complete database of the beneficiaries, Shaikh Khalid said.

The move, he reiterated, would also ensure Finance Ministry’s readiness to reimburse cash payment on a quarterly basis effective October.

Shaikh Khalid explained, the government decided to scrap subsidy only after ensuring protection of consumer interest with the advent of free competition.

The decision aims to protect public money, benefit the citizens and enhance government revenues restricted now by several challenges including oil price drop.

It was also revealed that the burden on government on account of food

subsidies increased by 242 per cent during the 7-year period between 2007 and 2014.

In terms of money, it translated to a whopping BD57.4 million by end 2014 from a negligible sum of BD16.8

million. The meat subsidy alone, for the

same period, left a deep hole in the government purse as it peaked to 363 per cent or an astronomical sum of BD46 million.

‘TOBACCO BUS’ SEIZED IN MAJOR HAUL IN MUHARRAQ

As much as 434 kilograms of Indian made chewing tobacco seizedDT News NetworkManama

Bahraini authorities have confiscated around 434

kilograms of Indian made chewing tobacco in Muharraq and Juffair.

The move follows a notice received by the department of health on September 10 from First Lieutenant of the Customs Affairs noting that a group of Asian nationals were storing substances made of tobacco in Muharraq and is using a bus to distribute them to commercial stores. They were also running a restaurant constructed with wood in Juffair.

A law enforcing team was formed immediately along with an anti-smoking group including Hussain Al Rayes, Salman Faisal, Customs

Lieutenants and Muharraq police. After trailing the district in Muharraq, the team took into custody a bus loaded with prohibited tobacco substances from the area. Raiding a store there, as authorised by public prosecution, the team also confiscated around 434 kilograms of Indian made chewing tobacco Tumbak and Pan in addition to raw materials and equipments used for its manufacturing.

The team also raided

the restaurant, which was unlicensed and found to lack minimal health requirements. Several health violations were also detected during the raid such as unauthorised preparing and serving of meals and selling banned tobacco substances and their alternatives as well as loose cigarettes.

Substances weighing 51kg were confiscated and legally established procedures were taken against the offenders who were referred

to public prosecution after interrogation.

The Health Ministry conveyed their sincere gratitude and appreciation to the customs lieutenants and the Muharraq police on this

fruitful collaboration, which aims to protect the nation, citizens and residents from the lethal plight of tobacco.

It is noteworthy that the Bahrain has banned these substances considering their

high toxin content, harmful effects of addiction, cancer and death, which is why the Health Ministry urges the public to cooperate with the anti-smoking inspectors and report any violations.

PILGRIMS DETERMINED TO PERFORM THE RITE OF HAJJ

Despite the tragic accident at Mecca, Bahraini pilgrims show no signs of backing outMuhannad Mansour/[email protected]

Manama

The “crane falling” incident in Mecca, which killed over

a hundred pilgrims on Friday did not affect the Bahraini pilgrims’ determination to travel to the holy lands, Hajj services offices confirmed.

While speaking to DT News yesterday, several owners of Umrah and pilgrimage offices in the country said Bahrain’s pilgrims are very determined to perform the rite of Hajj, the fifth pillar of Islam, despite the sad news.

Manager of Al Mortadha and Al Jannusani Pilgrimage Services in Aali, Sayed Mahmood said, “All registered pilgrims with our office are insisting on going to Mecca and perform the holy rites. To my knowledge, this is the general feedback from all pilgrims of Bahrain. In fact, 47 pilgrims from our office travelled to Saudi Arabia by bus today and the remaining 45 will go by air on September 17.”

“The mishap shocked the world and we are praying for those who were killed and for speed recovery of the injured pilgrims. Yet, none of pilgrims who are travelling with our office showed any sign of hesitation in regards to travelling to Mecca. Some

of them waited their entire life for such an opportunity,” Sayed Mahmood added.

Expats as wellSpeaking on similar lines,

Manager of Al Sahaba Hajj

and Umrah Services Hamza Mohiddeen told DT News that expats are very determined on visiting the holy land, confirming that “no one backed out or showed any intention to.”

“It’s heartbreaking to see

this many pilgrims die inside the Holy Grand Mosque in Mecca. But we’re proceeding with our procedures according to plan and no changes have been made.” Mohiddeen informed DT News an hour before the office’s bus

moved towards King Fahd Causeway.

Unlike other offices, Al Sahaba and five similar centres provide their services only to residents, as assigned by the Supreme Bahrain Hajj Committee.

Quotas reduction caused increase of prices

Following the recent hike of Hajj services’ fees, Deputy Manager of Al Asala Hajj and Umrah Services Salah Al Mahmeed said that the raise in pilgrimage fees came as a result of the reduction

of quotas allocated for local offices and the increasing demand in the market every year.

“The ongoing maintenance works that commenced three years ago at the Grand Mosque in Mecca, forced Saudi Hajj

authorities to reduce quotas allocated for each country. Bahrain’s quota was reduced to 3700 this year. Each of the approved 61 offices in the Kingdom receives a quota of 60-70 pilgrims,” Al Mahmeed explained.

Merging offices to defy price increase

Sayed Mahmood said that several offices in Bahrain have introduced a new idea this year, in order to reduce the prices of the soaring fees for their customers. He said that several offices merged their services, resulting in reducing expenses and benefiting pilgrims.

He said, “when two offices are merged, they bear fewer expenses, such as petrol consumption, vehicles maintenance and prices of air-flights tickets’ packages.”

“This is an innovative idea that was adopted by many pilgrimage service providers in Bahrain and was widely welcomed by pilgrims. Prices were reduced by around BD300 for air trips and BD400 for bus trips,” he added.

Bahrain Hajj Mission Head Sheikh Adnan

Al Qattan reaffirmed to DT News yesterday that no Bahraini pilgrims were affected by Friday’s mishap in the Grand Mosque.

He also said that “the

last day for pilgrims to be received in Saudi Arabia is September 17, as announced by Saudi authorities,” adding that pilgrims’ groups will start coming back to Bahrain on the September 26.

A car accessories shop in Jid Ali was gutted in a blaze

that broke out from within the shop yesterday morning. No official information has been made available yet about the cause of the fire and the extent of damages. The Interior Ministry has confirmed the incident in a message on its Twitter page. “Civil defence fights a fire in a shop on road 77 in Jid Ali area. Police at the scene,” the Ministry stated.

An eyewitness told DT News that the incident took place in the morning at 10. He said that according to the residents of the area, the mishap occurred because of

a short circuit. “The shop owner has suffered a huge loss due to the incident, most of the items in the shop has been destroyed. Workers from nearby shops tried to douse the fire using fire extinguisher and water but they failed to. Then the firemen came and took care of the situation,” he said.

In a video posted on social media, a number of men, apparently resident of the area and workers from nearby businesses were seen trying to contain the fire by using the fire extinguisher and pouring buckets of water. However, civil defence arrived the scene quickly and managed the situation.

The High Criminal Court adjourned the trial of a

person accused of attempting to travel abroad to join a terrorist organisation, until October 18 to hear the defence witnesses.

The accused was arrested while trying to travel to Oman using a passport that doesn’t

belong to him. Later it was confirmed he was trying to flee to Turkey to join the Islamic State in Syria.

The 26-year-old reportedly disguised himself to resemble the picture attached with the passport to mislead the customs officers. However, the officers noted the difference and apprehended him. He confessed during questioning

that his final destination was Turkey to seek political asylum. He couldn’t use his own passport as he was on the Kingdom’s travel ban list, according to court documents.

He got the other passport after deceiving a man by promising him a fully paid trip to Mecca.

“The owner of the passport revealed during questioning

that he wasn’t aware of the intention of the suspect,” the Public Prosecution said in a statement earlier. “The accused booked two tickets, one to Oman and the other to Turkey as he was trying to join an outlawed group,” according to the statement.

The accused was arrested at the Bahrain International Airport on April 20 this year.

Verdict of three persons suspected of stealing

BD7 from a cold store will be delivered on October 4.

The incident took place on October 20 in 2010, but the

accused were arrested recently. The trio, aged 37, 26 and 31, reportedly broke into a cold store in Riffa and stole BD7 and phone prepaid cards worth BD200.

One of them held the shop’s Asian cashier at knife point,

while the other two punched him on his face.

“They entered the cold store and requested a cigarette pack. As I was about to take out one, he held my hand and drew out a knife,” the cashier said in his statement before prosecutors.

The cashier alleged the accused fled from the scene in a grey vehicle.

The three were arrested after they carried out an identical robbery in the capital governorate. This time, cashier of the store identified one of

the accused in a police line-up. They face up to 15 years in jail if the High Criminal Court finds them guilty.

The 37-year-old is already serving a combined 80 years in prison after being convicted in numerous cases.

A ruling will be issued on September 20 in the

appeal filed by Al Wefaq Islamic Society against a three-month-suspension verdict to its activities.

The High Administrative Court ordered on October 28 last year for the suspension of Al Wefaq’s activities after it found the society breached the local law governing political societies.

In July last year, the Justice Ministry filed a suit against the society, saying that it must rectify its “illegal status following the annulment of four general assemblies for lack of a quorum and the non-commitment to the public and transparency requirements for holding them.”

And the High Administrative Court confirmed in its ruling that the society failed to meet a one-month deadline to hold a fresh internal election. However, execution of the verdict has been postponed and the ministry said it would not be implemented until the society holds a general assembly.

BAHRAINI WOMAN MAKES ANADVENTURE TRIP FOR A CAUSE

23-year-old Amal Al Saffar travels to Svalbard region, spreads message on cancerMehr Jan/[email protected]

Tucked under layers of blankets at the upper deck

of ‘Ocean Nova’ on a freezing night of minus five degrees, Amal Al Saffar was busy scribbling notes in her diary. It was then that a whale expert alerted her to quickly catch a glimpse of the world’s biggest

mammal, before it disappears underneath the frigid waters of the Arctic Ocean.

“It was 2am and while many of my fellow explorers were sleeping in their bunks. I was among the lucky few who were awake to see the dorsal fin of a blue whale, far in the silence of the ocean. And I could hear water being whisked out in a vertical push from its blowhole,” said Amal,

the first Bahraini woman to cover the Svalbard region, the Norwegian archipelago in the Arctic Circle.

With exhilaration still ringing in her voice, Amal

told DT News, the sight was among the most memorable experiences in the trip.

The Svalbard region is located midway between Norway and the North Pole

and stands at north latitude of 81 degrees.

Her journey started from Bahrain on July 31. After travelling to Bergen, Norway, she flew to Svalbard’s capital city ‘Longyearbyen’, from where she boarded the ship with 70 other passengers on an eleven day cruise of the region.

Organised by the Quark Expeditions, the scientific arctic mission lead the 23-year old adventurer to a range of wildlife species and varied vegetation.

“I was extremely lucky to see other exotic creatures including the Belluga whale, walruses, arctic birds, reindeers, polar bears and even fossilized whale bones,” Amal said, thanking her sponsors BMMI, Bahrain National Gas, YK Almoayyed & Sons, The Coca Cola Bottling Company, Alba, KLM Airline and Generous light Co. for making the trip possible.

The Third Time Charmer

Not new to adventures, Amal is also the first Bahraini to have covered the Antarctic Ocean and the mountain peak

Kilimanjaro, in 2013 and 2014, respectively.

“I am learning new cultures and lifestyles, and at the same time, showing people how advanced and liberal the Middle East has become,” she remarked.

And much like her previous endeavours through which she highlighted women empowerment and environment/sustainability, with her Arctic trip, she is emphasizing another poignant cause - cancer.

“I have seen this disease up close. I would like to emphasize the need to not represent it as a stigma. The society should be willing to talk about it openly like any other illness. I am willing to talk about it, even if I have to from the remote cold surroundings of the Arctic Circle,” Amal stated.

She will be organising a

range of workshops on the island - in co-ordination with the Bahrain Cancer Society- to create cancer awareness.

Amal also plans to donate money from the trip’s fund raising for cancer projects.

What’s next? When it comes to what she

plans next in her adventure series, Amal hasn’t quite decided yet.

She wishes to explore many exotic places, from the highest peak of Mount Fuji in Japan to the fascinating sights

in India.“For now, I wish to settle

down a bit and start working in my field of International Logistics, but I will definitely continue my travelling spree. I have always had the support of my family.”

Amal has only one message to pass on to the youth. “Believe in what you are doing and pursue it till you complete it. Even if you don’t get a 100 per cent outcome, you can still attain an 80-90pc of it, which is much better than nothing.”

BU HASSAN TO CONFRONT NABEEL RAJAB IN GENEVA

‘The world must know how Iran was backing the terror activities’Muhammad Azam/[email protected]

MP Jamal Bu Hassan, Vice Chairman of the

Foreign Affairs, Defence and National Security Committee of the Parliament said he would confront Nabeel Rajab and his fellows in Geneva. The duo will come face to face at the 30th regular session of the United Nations Human Rights Council being held from September 14 to October 2 in Geneva.

He said he will “expose their real faces in front of the

Human Rights organisations” confronting them with the pile of evidence against them he was carrying with him.

Speaking to DT News yesterday, Bu Hassan said that he is trying to rip the mask of the opponent as the representative of the people of Bahrain. He added that all the expenses of his 10-day travel and stay would be taken by himself, without using the government’s money.

He said that he would tell the real story of Bahrain to the Human Rights organizations. “The world must know how

ruthlessly these people are killing our policemen on duty

and how Iran was backing them with all the means and arms for their terrorist activities against the innocent people. How they disrupt traffic by blocking roads and burning tyres which was creating health issues as well,” he added.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa had issued a statement on Thursday that the explosives they had confiscated were sufficient to destroy Manama and all these were coming from Iran.

“Bahrain has a Parliament and all the issues must be

discussed at the Parliament and not on the roads. If they have political issues, they should bring them on the floor of the Parliament and not in the streets,” Bu Hassan added.

“Bahrain is the host of the 5th fleet of US Navy and the United

States has been watching the human rights situation in Bahrain. The restoration of military aid by them is a clear proof that Bahrain is on the right track as far as human rights situation is concerned,” he said.

The events aimed at fostering patriotism, national identity and social responsibility among students.

In some schools, students observed a minute of silence during the morning assembly, while in some other schools, students, administrative staff and teachers read poems lauding the martyrs’ heroism and valour.

Some schools devoted the morning queue to pray for the souls of the martyrs. One of the schools honoured a martyr’s son in tribute to his father’s heroic role in defending the nation’s Arab identity and security.

EXPANSION OF BUS NETWORKGIVES MANAMA TERMINAL LIFE

More buses, late night services increase passenger traffic

MP calls to replace wooden classrooms

The Manama bus terminal bustles with activities

nowadays, thanks to the increased passenger traffic helped by the expansion of bus network.

There had been only 35 public buses in the Kingdom, when the new bus transport firm, Bahrain Public Transport Company (BPTC), took over the transport network in Bahrain. But after August 1, when the full-fledged transport system was launched, the scenario changed completely. According to BPTC sources, as many as 142 public buses are currently plying in the Kingdom, covering almost all parts of Bahrain.

Cafeteria operator at the Manama Terminal Basit said the primary reason for the increase in passenger movement is the availability of bus services till late night.

“Even earlier, people from different parts of Bahrain used

to come here, especially during weekends. But they used to leave Manama early or they wouldn’t get a transport back home. Now the passengers can confidently stay back till late hours as there is late night bus service,” he said.

The authorities have also launched a number of facilities,

making the journey convenient for the passengers. A control room has been set up next to the bus terminal and many ticket vending machines have also been placed. Moreover, BPTC personnel are stationed at the terminal to guide the passengers, in case of any difficulty.

Basit added the passenger movement increases during evenings, and is the highest on weekends. Cafeterias around the terminal has reported an increase in turnover.

Bus timings, still a worry In spite of the increased

traffic in the Manama Terminal, bus timings continue to bother passengers. Due to regular traffic blocks, the bus drivers are not able to stick to their timings.

Roshan, a regular traveller between Salmaniya and East Riffa, said, “According to the time table, there are buses between Salmaniya and East Riffa every 20 minutes. But sometimes, especially in the evening, I have to wait up to one hour to catch a bus towards East Riffa. And the drivers keep blaming traffic congestion.

If timing problem is solved, Bahrain’s public bus transport system would succeed in achieving its purpose,” he said.

MP Hamad Al Dossary said in a recent statement that the classrooms/cabins pose great threats to students in HH Shaikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Khalifa Elementary and Intermediate Boys’ School

The MP demanded Education Ministry to construct appropriate concrete buildings.

He said, “The current situation at both schools

could develop into a much worse situation, especially with the frequent power cuts at these cabins, forcing students and teachers to bear high temperatures.”

Al Dossary mentioned that he received numerous calls

from parents who complained about the deteriorated conditions at the school.

“The ministry should take steps to improve academic environment at schools and ensure the safety of students and teachers. We

demand an effective plan to be implemented during the ongoing school year to solve this matter and make schools in Bahrain compatible with the ambitious project of HM the King for future schools in the Kingdom,” he added.

The legislator had previously presented a proposal to the Parliament House to remove wooden classrooms. Majority of MPs agreed to the proposal, which awaits implementation.

MP Hamad Al Dossary said in a recent statement that the classrooms/cabins pose great threats to students in HH Shaikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Khalifa Elementary and Intermediate Boys’ School

and Budaiya Elementary and Intermediate Girls’ School.

Gulf Sotheby’s International Realty is now the license

holder of the exclusive global luxury real estate network in six Gulf countries, following its recent acquisition of the GCC franchise license. The territory to be covered by Gulf Sotheby’s International Realty will allow it to provide comprehensive services to its clients.

Sotheby’s International Realty® network connects the finest independent real estate companies to the most prestigious clientele in the world. The 25-year GCC license agreement was signed following the success of the UAE franchisee, who is on track to close 2015 with a 400% increase in transaction volumes over 2014.

Gulf Sotheby’s International Realty is led by George Azar as Chairman, who brings more than 18 years of finance experience to the firm. His focus on providing robust regional market intelligence has been a key factor in the firm’s success.

“Our goal is to always achieve the highest sale price for our clients, but achieving this means equipping investors with sound intelligence about the property market and its potential. Our clients are sophisticated high net worth and institutional investors

who need to understand the underlying fundamentals of the markets in which they invest. This is why we have consistently beaten our own sale price targets in 2015, despite the slowdown in the Dubai property market,” said Mr. Azar.

Last month the firm’s top agent Seran Gheorghe achieved the highest per square foot price in 2015 for a luxury residential apartment in the Dubai area, recording AED 6,250 per square foot.

Most recently, Gulf Sotheby’s International Realty

was appointed by Dubai Properties, the leading Dubai-based real estate master developer and asset manager, the exclusive selling agent for the prelaunch phase of its latest project 1/JBR. The firm is marketing 25 of the units ahead of the project’s full release. Project details will be unveiled at Cityscape Global from 8-10 September in Dubai.

Gulf Sotheby’s International Realty’s Investment Division also played an instrumental role in facilitating deal negotiations

and the recent partnership between Emirates REIT, DAMAC and Jebel Ali School to develop a new educational facility in DAMAC’s Akoya project.

“Our clients want to invest in high quality assets in the world’s most resilient and dynamic markets. As a Sotheby’s International Realty® affiliate, we provide access to these assets backed by local market intelligence and expertise to help optimize real estate returns,” added Mr. Azar.

Currently operating in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, Gulf Sotheby’s International Realty’s services include sales and leasing, international sales, investments, projects and a unique client representative division. The firm intends to open seven new offices around the region including Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam in Saudi Arabia and Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman.

Stratford Holding Group, the exclusive publisher of bizbahrain magazine

announced its partnership with BCMS Gulf, in which the latter will provide reports along with the latest news on Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A) deals in the region as well as information about the available opportunities and trends in this sector.

Mohammed Baqer, CEO of BCMS Gulf commented on the collaboration, “We have acquired sufficient knowledge on M&A deals that occur in the Middle East including Bahrain thanks to our wide and vibrant relationship with business owners in various economic sectors. Every year, there are around 250 businesses in Bahrain being acquired mostly by international buyers.”

Ahmed Khalfan, CEO of Stratford Holding Group said “this partnership aims to provide readers such as businessmen and women, professionals, and business owners in different sectors with valuable news and reports about the available opportunities in the M&A sector. Getting this information is hard with the scarcity of specialized institutions that play an active role in this field.”

Buddhism, which holds that wealth is temporary and no path

to happiness, might not sound like the best source for money wisdom.

Not so, says Ethan Nichtern, the prominent Buddhist teacher, who has written a new book, “The Road Home,” on self-awareness and spiritual seeking.

Money is unavoidable and it is people’s attitude to it that causes worry and stress, says Nichtern, who sat down with Reuters to discuss how money fits into a spiritual approach to the world.

Q: Can we escape our connection to money - or should we?

A: We need to have some kind of system for measuring how we consume, produce, and share. So there will always be money in any complex society. And any human who wants to pay the rent has to learn the rules of budgeting.

But it’s not just a necessary evil. Money can also be spiritual or divine, by powering whatever positive activity you want to engage in.

Q: You were raised in money-centric New York City. Did that shape your views?

A: Growing up on the Upper West Side and in the East Village, I certainly realized how important money was. It determines so much of the structure of our world, and it also brings so much stress along with it. Especially in New York, people feel burdened by the need for the security and status that money brings. That’s why we all need to

open up and have this conversation. I’ve never had the (billionaire) Koch Brothers in my class, though - that could be awkward.

Q: Why is money seen as the solution to all our problems?

A: In life, we are all wandering around in circles, thinking that our next stop will be exactly what we have always been looking for. But we never arrive - it’s an illusion of an oasis. It is the same thing with materialism: The idea that ‘If I get the right stuff, I will finally feel at home.’ But we can never acquire enough stuff.

Q: Why are we so dependent on something so abstract?

A: First money was gold coins, then it was paper, and at a certain point it just became computer files. Money has become more and more abstract, and we are basically just agreeing that this is the way things

are. But that doesn’t make it any less powerful. Even though it is abstract, we cling to it as part of our identity.

Q: People’s foremost money worry is retirement. How can we deal with that anxiety?

A: Buddhism teaches about cause and effect. So by all means, prepare for retirement. There is nothing wrong with that. But the other way to look at it is, if the mind is insecure, then no amount of money will ever make us feel safe. Even if you saved $50 million, you would just worry about something else, like getting cancer or having a car accident. Just try to remember that everyone else on earth has a similar anxiety. Then you won’t feel so alone. So plan well, and then let go.

Q: How can people use money as a positive tool?

A: We are taught to use money in ways that isolate us. But money is an exchange. If there was only one

person in the world, you could be a trillionaire, but it wouldn’t even matter because all that money would be worthless.

Think about how money connects you to other people. From a Buddhist standpoint, you should think about how to use that money to empower others.

Q: Any final messages about the possibilities of money?

A: You can be an awakened human being, and also make a living at the same time. When people say money is dirty, then they are just leaving it all to people who don’t have any spiritual practices or values. That is an abdication of our responsibilities. Those of us with compassion actually need to go deeper into these arenas. With money, we can empower some very meaningful things in the world.

Sunday, September 13, 2015 Money TALK 13

With more and more success stories of women in the

corporate world, it looks like the winds are changing.

The climate is increasingly getting better for women in business now. To me, it seems that there are now more opportunities for women to progress in their chosen careers, be it business or indeed in other professions, which were once thought of as traditionally male domains. The playing field is slowly levelling out, and we are seeing more and more women breaking through the glass ceiling. I think women now have the confidence to pursue their dreams and ambitions, and this is in large part due to the help, guidance and tools that exist to help people. Also,

now taboos and stereotypes are breaking down. People don’t seem to hold those outdated views that a woman’s place is only in the home. Families encourage women to have a work, life balance – the best of both worlds.

The issue is the same as it’s always been, namely that women have to work that bit harder to prove themselves. I definitely think that women have a lot to offer at senior positions. They are just as highly skilled, educated and capable as their male counterparts. But often, women are not given the same opportunities as men because of negative stereotypes, for example that they may not be able to give as much time to the job due to family commitments, or that they will want to take time off to have babies. Women are very good at multi-tasking, and are more than capable of balancing a high-powered career with family life.

The way to encourage and

empower women to go for senior positions more is to have strong female role models. Over the years, we have increasingly seen more women reach the top across various professions, and they serve as a great way to encourage other women to also believe that they can do the same.

It may sound like a bit of a cliché, but the way to break through the glass ceiling is to simply work hard, be diligent, know your industry inside and out, and always be positive in your outlook. I am always learning new things about my profession, so in that way, it is always a learning curve for me. As long as someone is willing to give 100 percent to whatever they put their mind to, and they have a mind-set to succeed, then they will.

Millions of women out there balance family and work life perfectly well and still somehow manage to excel at both. Women are very strong

and focused when it comes to achieving tasks. I believe women can multitask well because they know where their priorities lie.

You have to be passionate about the task you take on and you must know the industry you are operating in, inside and out. The legal environment has changed since the time when I had started out in Law, now more and more women are freely pursuing a career in the Law and related fields. It should only get better from here. I also want to reach out to all the women out there and tell them that nothing is unachievable if you set your heart and mind to it.

(Ms. Pavani Reddy, Managing Partner at international law firm Zaiwalla & Co, is one of a few young female Asian individuals to manage a high-profile law firm in London, a fantastic achievement in a trade often criticised for its “old-boys network” environment.)

The Bahrain Technology Companies Society “BTECH” signed an agreement

with a Chinese Association for e-commerce to pave the way to make Bahrain a center for development of e-commerce projects in the region and enhance its role as a global hub for trade and services.

The agreementwas signed on the sidelines of BTECH’s participation in the 17th edition of the China International Fair for Investment and Trade (CIFIT) held from 8 to 11 of September in China, to enhance mutual cooperation between the Kingdom of Bahrain and the Republic of China in the field of e-commerce, and the exchange of experiences between Chinese, Arab and Middle Eastern enterprises in this field.

The agreement stated that the Bahraini side will organise the first annual “conference in the field of e-commerce”, which covers the area from the Kingdom of Bahrain. This event is expected to attract thousands of those interested in developing e-commerce industry and to achieve a positive impact on trade in general in the Kingdom of Bahrain and the region.

According to the agreement, the Chinese side will come to Bahrain to attend the “MEET ICT” conference and “BITEX” exhibition to be held during January 2016, to be the official beginning of mutual cooperation and to bring Chinese expertise to Bahrain and the region. The event’s organizers will hold special events for networking between the Chinese delegations on the one hand and all the participants in the exhibition from local and international companies on the other hand.

Chairman of the Chinese Association for e-commerce, Tomson Tang said “We are very optimistic about the next steps

under the agreement which will enable us to develop joint cooperation in the field of e-commerce on the one hand, and to engage with confidence to the information and communications technology sector in the Bahraini market which has large potentials, close to the Saudi market, rich with human resources and has an up-to-date infrastructure”.

For his part, Secretary of BTECH Board of Directors Abbas Hussain stated that “Both associations will work initially to build executive steps of the framework of cooperation and exchange of experiences, in addition to strengthening communications between the Bahraini companies and Chinese counterparts in order to identify more opportunities for cooperation and investment. This comes as part of BTECH

quest for the advancement of Bahraini technology companies and strengthening their presence locally, regionally and even globally”.

The BTECH adviser, Ahmed Al-Hujairi, pointed out, “Through this agreement, we aim to put Bahrain on the world map for e-commerce, and to name it as a regional hub in this field by taking advantage of the Chinese outstanding experience. It is enough to know that the official statistics indicate that the e-commerce volume of China in the current year amounted to nearly $ 370 billion, and is expected to rise to $ 470 billion next year, and we will work very hard in the next stages to be proactive in the Kingdom of Bahrain to take advantage of the great development witnessed by China in this field.”

YOUR STAR TODAY

This is your lucky day, and you can expect all sorts of wonderful

surprises. At work, it is likely that you will be offered a raise or some exciting new projects. At home, you may discover that your house has gone up in value much more than you’d expected. Take advantage of any opportunities that come your way today.

ARIES20th March - 20th April

Conversation and travel are both highlighted today. It is pos-

sible that you will take a flight and wind up sitting next to a fascinating person. The two of you have much in common. By the end of the trip, you are likely exchang-ing phone numbers. There’s no denying the chemistry between the two of you.

LEO 20th July - 20th Aug

Even though you seem relatively content with your career, you are

ready for some sort of change in your life. The time is ripe for you to consider join-ing a group of some sort. Why not join your local book club? Or, if you’re more inclined toward activity, sign up for the ski team at work or get involved with the local running club.

SAGITTARIUS 20th Nov - 20th Dec

Passion is very much on your mind. Unfortunately, you have a

lot to get done before you can con-centrate on matters of romance. There is a lot of paperwork to be handled, but you should buckle down and get it all done to-day. You will be relieved to finish them, and you will be free to enjoy the evening.

TAURUS 20th April - 20th May

Today you likely take a look around your living environ-

ment and see that there is much room for improvement. A pending visit from a friend or relative may be just the incentive you need to whip things into shape. A fresh coat of paint in the living room will make a world of difference.

VIRGO20th Aug - 20th Sept

Even though you consider yourself a sane and rational human being,

today your intuition is operating at such a high level. Rather than trying to will it away, why not embrace those messages that are bombarding you? Just give yourself this day to embrace the possibility that you may have extra-sensory ability.

CAPRICORN 20th Dec - 20th Jan

You are never at a loss for an opin-ion, and today is no exception.

However, the energy of the day is such that you are happier to listen to conver-sations rather than participate in them. You can’t help but smile at all the misinformation that gets bandied about. Tomorrow, how-ever, is another matter entirely!

GEMINI 20th May - 20th June

Family, home and hearth are very much on your mind today.

There may be a community event in your neighbourhood that you attend out of a sense of obligation but remain for the sheer fun of it. Sometimes you get so caught up in work that you forget there is a whole world outside the working world.

LIBRA 20th Sep - 20th Oct

You may be feeling slightly bored and restless with your

life. If so, today an opportunity may come your way that should not be ig-nored. You may have a chance to take a trip to some exotic locale or attend a class or lecture that will open up your mind to all sorts of interesting possibilities.

AQUARIUS 20th Jan - 20th Feb

Finances are very much high-lighted for you today . This is

not necessarily a good or bad thing, it just is! Spend as much time as is necessary today to sort out your re-cords and make sure everything is in good order. It’s never too early to col-lect those receipts and get organized!

CANCER 20th June - 20th July

Today is likely to be an odd combination of social and fi-

nancial entities. Likely the two will be combined in some way. Per-haps you need to meet your attorney and she would invite you to join her for a meal. Or it may be that you and a col-league decide to go out for a drink.

SCORPIO 20th Oct - 20th Nov

You consider yourself a purely rational person. If you are not a

scientist, you should be! View your life through an objective lens and don’t al-low extraneous matter to cloud your vi-sion. Today, however, even though you are sceptical, you are likely to be taken aback by the extraordinary events of the day.

[email protected] good teacher knows how important it is to connect with students and understand our culture.– Adora Svitak

Inspired by Dr APJ Abdul Kalam’s words, ‘don’t declare holiday on

my death, instead work an extra day if you have love towards me’, a school in the Kingdom of Bahrain decided to work an extra day for the staff yesterday (Saturday) which is normally a holiday for the school. The entire staff of the New Millennium School, run under the aegis of the Delhi Public School Society, worked on September 12, 2015 to pay tribute to the former Indian President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam who passed away in July 2015. School Principal Arun Kuumar Sharma while appreciating the staff members for their wonderful gesture of extra working said: “Even though no salute will be enough for this great personality, this is a simple step forward to practise his teachings in our daily life”. Dr. Kalam, widely referred to as ‘People’s President’ was an iconic figure for millions of Indians. His teachings, visionary leadership and simplicity inspired masses from all walks of life especially the youth. Dr. Kalam was also an advocate of true spirit of working and often said: “One is blessed if one can die working”. While delivering a lecture at the Indian Institute of Management Shillong, Kalam collapsed and died from an apparent cardiac arrest on 27 July 2015, aged 83. His death was mourned across the nation with thousands including national-level dignitaries attending the funeral ceremony held in his

hometown of Rameshwaram, where he was buried with full state honours.New Millennium School Chairman Dr. Ravi Pillai, Managing Director

Geetha Pillai, also appreciated the school staff members and urged them to get inspiration from Dr. Kalam’s teachings while reminding them of the

great responsibility they have towards the students.

During his maiden visit to the Kingdom of Bahrain in February 6,

2015 Dr APJ Abdul Kalam had addressed the students at a function held in the Kingdom hall of New Millennium School. Addressing teachers and educators Dr Kalam said teachers should treat all the students equally and should not support any differentiation on account of religion, community or language and continuously upgrade the capacities in teaching so that they can impart quality education to the students. “They should realize by being a teacher, they are making an important contribution to the efforts of national development of the country. The teachers must constantly endeavour to fill their mind, with great thoughts and spread the nobility in thinking and action among the students. Teacher should celebrate the success of the students.” Dr Kalam said. “To enable development of youth first and foremost, the teacher’s love for teaching is essential, with teaching as the soul of the teacher. The teachers must realize that they are responsible for shaping not just students but ignited youth who are the most powerful resource on earth. With their full commitment to the great mission of teaching, the teacher transforms himself or herself as a great teacher only when he or she is capable of elevating the average

student to high performance. The teacher conducting himself or herself in a noble way itself is a lifetime message for students.” Dr Kalam said.

Deutsche Bank AG is considering sweeping

changes that could include scaling back or closing operations in some countries, as well as overhauling the bank’s executive ranks, according to people familiar with the matter.

The German lender’s 19-member supervisory board is discussing those options as part of a broader array of possible strategic shifts as they meet at an annual gathering in the Bavarian Alps, the people said.

The outcome of the discussions will mark the first major moves by Deutsche Bank’s new chief executive, John Cryan, who is looking to cut costs, boost profitability and help the bank recover from

a series of regulatory missteps. Executives have promised to deliver a detailed strategy update to the public by the end of October.

As part of the discussions, Deutsche Bank is reviewing the roles held by a handful of senior executives, some of

whom were close lieutenants of Anshu Jain, who stepped down as co-CEO in June, according to the people familiar with the matter. The possible shake-up could involve some of those executives leaving the bank altogether, while others might be given different jobs.

Another move under consideration would involve deep cuts to Deutsche Bank’s Russian trading and investment-banking business, the people familiar with the matter said. Concern about potential money-laundering by Russian clients, through equity trades handled by Deutsche Bank, has spurred an internal review and investigations by European and US regulators, they said.

The Russian cuts could affect around 200 investment-banking employees there, people familiar with the matter said. Cryan said in a memo to employees on July 1, his first day on the job, that Deutsche Bank would “narrow the scope of [its] activities” as part of efforts to improve its financial

performance and compliance. He said businesses “not controlled to the standards we demand” could be shut down.

Cryan addressed the firm’s reputation in his July 1 memo, saying it “has been damaged by instances of serious misconduct.” He added, “Consequent heavy fines have strained our capital resources and will likely continue to do so for some time to come.”

Cryan was named CEO in June in a surprise move to replace Jain and Jürgen Fitschen, co-chief executives since June 2012. The moves came less than a month after German regulators blasted the bank’s management for failing to stop or adequately inform regulators about attempted market manipulation. (Market Watch)

The number of oil and gas rigs in the United States

declined again this week due to lower oil prices, the Houston-based driller Baker Hughes said Friday.

According to Baker Hughes, one of the world’s largest oilfield services companies, oil and gas rigs in the United States fell by 16 to 848 as of Friday. Last week, the rig count in the country dropped 13, the biggest plunge in three months.

Earlier this week, the company’s rig count report for August showed that the average total rig count for August was 883, up 17 from July.

The number of drilling rigs in the country peaked at 4,530 in 1981 and bottomed at 488 in 1999. The recovery in drilling activity and output in the United States expected for the year of 2016 is starting to look elusive, said the International Energy Agency on Friday, which expects the country’s drilling and completion activity to drop by 20 per cent to 70pc in 2016.

Pakistan’s central bank yesterday reduced interest

rates to a 42-year-low of six per cent, after inflation fell dramatically.

The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) announced it had cut rates to six percent from 6.5pc.

Inflation came down to 3.6pc in July-August from 8.4pc in the same period last year due to falling fuel and food prices.

The SBP added the Pakistan economy would receive a boost from infrastructure projects such as the planned China

Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

“Therefore, there is anticipation of higher economic activity in (fiscal year) FY2015-16 which is expected to boost credit uptake,” the bank said.

The Pakistan fiscal year begins in July.

The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is an ambitious $46 billion investment plan linking western China to the Arabian Sea in Pakistan with infrastructure, energy and transport projects.

Pakistan is set to sign a 40-year-lease with a Chinese company to develop a massive

special economic zone in the deep sea port of Gwadar as part of the scheme.

Pakistan’s economy grew at 4.24pc during the 2014-2015 fiscal year with per capita income rising a significant 9.25pc, markers that come as investor confidence in the long-underperforming South Asian country have also increased.

Pakistan is currently in a $6.6bn loan programme with the International Monetary Fund, which was granted on condition that Islamabad carried out extensive economic reforms, particularly in the energy and taxation sectors.

Twitter’s biggest investor has unleashed another

tweetnado on the company. On Friday, Chris Sacca fired

off the latest in a series of tweets criticizing the social network’s board for dragging its feet as the company nears three

months without a permanent CEO.

In the barrage of tweets, the venture capitalist again threw his weight behind co-founder Jack Dorsey, who has run the San Francisco company on an interim basis since Dick Costolo resigned earlier this

year amid struggling growth.“They are running a ‘process’

yet there is only one person fit to run this company: @Jack,” Sacca tweeted, using Dorsey’s Twitter handle. “Enough is enough.”

Twitter didn’t respond to a phone call and email seeking

comment.Sacca’s comments come as

pressure mounts on Twitter’s board amid weakening financial performance and stalled user growth. Last year, a vocal group of investors publicly criticized Twitter executives for not finding new

ways to attract users and make money from their traffic. The company has also lost high-ranking employees in the wake of the management shuffle, which started in June.

Friday’s tweetstorm isn’t the first time Sacca, who was Twitter’s largest shareholder at

the time of its initial public offering in 2013, has used the medium to make his opinion clear. Sacca endorsed Dorsey in a series of tweets on August 7.

In May, Sacca wrote an 8,500-word open letter to Twitter urging it to make the product easier to use.

Yahoo said Friday that marketing chief Kathy

Savitt is leaving to take a job heading a digital team at television and film industry studio STX Entertainment.

Savitt played a high-level role in efforts by Yahoo chief Marissa Mayer’s to revive the

aging Internet pioneer and her departure could signal a larger shake-up taking place at the company.

“We can confirm that Kathy Savitt has decided to leave the company,” a Yahoo spokesperson said in reply to an inquiry.

“We appreciate her

contributions to Yahoo over the past three years and wish her well.”

Yahoo declined further comment.

Savitt will start next month as president of a digital team at STX and be responsible for “helping the studio fulfill its ambition of becoming a

true creative haven for the world’s top entertainment talent,” the company said in a release.

STX was established early last year and described itself as “a fully-integrated motion picture, television, and digital content studio.”

“Viewers are in control

and each film or show has to earn its space in their time on its own merit,” Savitt said in a release.

“What we are doing at STX hasn’t been done before; we are creating a new way for audiences to access meaningful stories, from wherever they are.”Kathy Savitt

A dozen major banks agreed Friday to pay $1.9 billion

to settle allegations of price-fixing in the market for credit default swaps, a derivative that acts as insurance against bond defaults.

JPMorgan Chase, BNP Paribas of France and Barclays of Britain were among the banks striking the deal to settle investor allegations in US District Court in Manhattan, a lawyer for the plaintiffs said.

“All defendants in the case agreed, including twelve of the world’s largest banks,” Dan Brockett, the lawyer, said in an email.

A group of investors led by the pension fund of a unit of the Sheet Metal Workers union filed the class-action lawsuit

in 2013. They accused the defendants of rigging the CDS market and making them pay unfairly higher prices for the instruments.

CDS are a murky corner of the financial sector that is under scrutiny by authorities

in several countries. The swaps were used widely as speculative tools during and after the 2008 financial crisis.

The other banks in the settlement are four US banks, Bank of America, Citigroup, Goldman Sachs and Morgan

Stanley; and five foreign banks: Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank, HSBC, Royal Bank of Scotland, and UBS.

Among other defendants was Markit Group, a British firm that provides financial information services, including on the CDS market.

Brockett said the $1.866 billion settlement agreement was expected to be finalized in seven to 10 days.

The US Department of Justice and the European Commission, the European Union’s executive arm, have ongoing investigations of these same banks, Markit, and the International Swaps and Derivatives Association.

About two million CDS are in circulation worldwide, representing $11 trillion.

A group of major automakers accounting

for more than half of US auto sales will make automatic emergency braking standard on new US vehicles in one of the industry’s biggest auto safety moves since it embraced technology to prevent rollovers more than a decade ago.

The car makers, which accounted for 57 per cent of car and light truck sales in the US last year, said Friday they will work with regulators and the insurance industry to roll out collision avoiding braking technology.

The automakers are Volkswagen and its luxury car division Audi, BMW, Ford Motor Co, General Motors Co, Mazda Motor Corp, Daimler

AG’s Mercedes-Benz, Tesla Motors Inc, Toyota Motor Corp and Volvo AB.

“We are entering a new era of vehicle safety, focused on preventing crashes from ever occurring,” US Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said in a statement Friday. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which is overseeing the effort, said the collaborative agreement took shape over the last two

weeks and that other car and truck manufacturers are still considering joining.

Analysts say it could still take years for automakers to redesign the electrical and braking systems of their cars to install autonomous braking. Among the automotive technology suppliers that could benefit are Continental AG, Robert Bosch GmbH, Delphi Automotive Plc, Denso Corp and Autoliv Inc.

Germany’s powerful finance minister Wolfgang

Schaeuble yesterday sharply criticised an EU proposal to create a common deposit-insurance system for eurozone banks. “We have to make sure not to put the cart before the horse,” the influential minister said on the sidelines of an EU meeting of finance ministers.

On Wednesday, EU commission head Jean-Claude Juncker said deposit insurance shared across the eurozone is “the missing part of our banking union.”

But Schaeuble leads an influential group of eurozone ministers who want to keep their national protection systems separate from banks in other eurozone countries.

Mecca

Saudi authorities said yesterday that annual

Hajj pilgrimage will go ahead despite a crane collapse that killed 107 people at Mecca’s Grand Mosque, where crowds returned to pray a day after the tragedy.

Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims had already arrived in Mecca for the Hajj, when the massive red and white crane collapsed during rain and high winds on Friday.

Parts of the Grand Mosque, one of Islam’s holiest sites, remained sealed off Saturday around the toppled crane, which also injured around 200 people when it fell into a courtyard.

But there was little mourning among pilgrims, who snapped pictures of the wreckage and continued with their prayers and rituals.

“I wish I had died in the accident, as it happened at a holy hour and in a holy place,” Egyptian pilgrim Mohammed Ibrahim said. The accident occurred only about an hour before evening mahgrib

prayers on the Muslim weekly day of prayer.

Om Salma, a Moroccan pilgrim, said “our phones have not stopped ringing since yesterday with relatives calling to check on us.” Indonesians and Indians were among those killed when the crane collapsed,

while the injured included Malaysians, Egyptians and Iranians.

A Saudi official said the Hajj, expected to start on September 21, would proceed despite the tragedy.

“It definitely will not affect the Hajj this season, and the affected part will probably be

fixed in a few days,” said the official, who declined to be named.

An investigative committee has “immediately and urgently” begun searching for the cause of the collapse, the official Saudi Press Agency said.

The contractor has been directed to ensure the safety of all other cranes at the site, it added.

The cranes poke into the air over the sprawling mosque expansion taking place beneath the Mecca Royal Clock Tower, the world’s third-tallest building, at 601 metres (1,972 feet).

Abdel Aziz Naqoor, who said he works at the mosque, said he saw the massive construction crane fall during the storm.

“If it weren’t for Al Tawaf bridge the injuries and deaths would have been worse,” he said, referring to a covered walkway which broke the crane’s fall and surrounds the holy Kaaba.

HAJJ TO GO AHEAD

Saudi Arabia bans Hajj camel slaughterJeddah

Saudi Arabia on Friday banned the slaughter of

camels during this year’s Hajj pilgrimage, after a surge in deaths from the MERS virus linked to the animals.

Camels will not be allowed to enter the holy sites of Mecca and Medina, the Permanent Committee for Fatwa said in a statement carried by the official Saudi Press Agency.

Hundreds of thousands of faithful from around the

world have begun to gather for the annual hajj, which is expected to begin on September 21.

“The Permanent Committee for Fatwa stressed no slaughter of the camels inside the holy sites due to emergence of corona virus,” the committee said.

Only sheep and cows will be allowed.

As part of the Hajj rituals, pilgrims traditionally slaughter animals and give the meat to the needy.

The World Health Organization has cited the preliminary results of studies indicating that people working with camels are at increased risk of infection from the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV).

Saudi Arabia is the worst-affected of more than 20 countries where MERS has appeared.

The Ministry of Health on Friday reported three new cases, bringing to 1,231 the

number of infections since MERS was first identified in the kingdom in 2012. There have been 521 deaths, including 19 in one week during late August.

MERS is considered a deadlier but less infectious cousin of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) virus that appeared in Asia in 2003 and killed hundreds of people, mostly in China.

MERS symptoms can include fever, coughing and shortness of breath.

The collapse of a construction crane

that killed 107 people at Mecca’s Grand Mosque was “an act of God” and not due to a technical fault, an engineer for the developer said yesterday.

The engineer for Saudi Binladin Group, which is carrying out a massive expansion of the mosque, said the crane, like many others on the project, had been there for three or four years without any problem.

“It was not a technical issue at all,” said the engineer, who asked not to be identified.

“I can only say that what happened was beyond the power of humans. It was an act of God and, to my knowledge, there was no human fault in it at all.”

The engineer said the crane was the main one used on work to expand the tawaf, or circumambulation area

around the Kaaba - a massive cubed structure at the centre of the mosque that is a focal point of worship.

“It has been installed in a way so as not to affect the hundreds of thousands of worshippers in the area and in an extremely professional way,” he said.

“This is the most difficult place to work in, due to the huge numbers of people in the area.”

The crane’s heavy hook, which is able to lift hundreds of tonnes, began swaying and moved the whole crane with it, toppling into the mosque, the engineer explained.

The development project is expanding the area of the Grand Mosque by 400,000 square metres (4.3 million square feet), allowing it to accommodate up to 2.2m people at once.

Saudi Binladin Group belongs to the family of the late al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

Saudi Arabia’s King Salman vowed yesterday

to find out what caused a crane collapse that killed 107 people at Mecca’s Grand Mosque.

“We will investigate all the reasons and afterwards declare the results to the citizens,” he said after visiting the site, one of Islam’s holiest.

The official Saudi Press Agency said Salman “discussed the causes of

the accident and its effects on the holy mosque” after he saw where the massive crane came down during a vicious thunderstorm on Friday.

SPA said Salman expressed his condolences to the families of the dead, and then visited a local hospital “to check on the health of the injured who are from several nationalities including Iranian, Turkish, Afghan, Egyptian and Pakistani.”

Gas explosion kills 85

INDIA’S ‘MP’ BLEEDSNew Delhi

A powerful explosion triggered by a gas

cylinder tore through a packed restaurant in India yesterday killing at least 85 people and wounding approximately 100 others, police said, in one of the worst such accidents in the country in recent memory.

The restaurant building in central Madhya Pradesh state was being used to illegally store explosives, which detonated in the blast, local authorities said, vastly amplifying its impact and destroying neighbouring buildings.

“Initially we heard the sound of (fire) crackers... a huge explosion took place forcing people to run for cover,” Balram, an injured labourer, told Press Trust of India (PTI) news agency from the hospital in Jhabua district.

The blast in the town of Petlawad occurred at around 8:30am local time (0300 GMT) as many office workers and schoolchildren were having breakfast in the restaurant.

Photographs from the scene showed corpses covered in dust and ash lying in the streets alongside the twisted wreckage of burned-out

vehicles, as victims described seeing body parts strewn in the street. “We have seen them flying and falling on the ground,” Narsingh, one of the injured said.

Television footage showed scores of people and rescue workers using their bare hands to shift mangled heaps of steel and concrete of the ruined buildings while police cordoned off the area.

Police revised the number of people who died down to 85 after earlier reporting a higher

toll, after clearing the debris of the destroyed restaurant and neighbouring structures.

“Earlier we thought it was 104 (people who died) based on various reports coming to us but now our own official information says 85 confirmed deaths,” M. L. Gond, an inspector in charge of Jhabua’s police control room, said.

“Total bodies identified and confirmed dead are 85 now,” Ashok Jadhav, the local sub-divisional magistrate, said.

“As for the site, it has been cleared and no more bodies are there,” he said, adding that around 100 others were being treated for their injuries in various nearby hospitals.

Authorities suspect the intensity of the explosion may have been compounded by detonators and gelatin sticks, an explosive material used in mining, being stored in the restaurant building.

“Initial reports suggest that detonators and explosives... used for digging wells and

for mining were stored in the room next to the restaurant, which made the explosion so big,” Gond said.

He added that the explosive material was being stored illegally in the residential area.

Another district police official, Anurag Mishra, cited the restaurant’s proximity to a busy bus stand as a reason for the high number of casualties.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan took to Twitter to express his sadness at the loss of life.

“The Jhabua tragedy is heart wrenching. I offer my condolences to the families of the victims and pray for the speedy recovery of those injured,” Chouhan said.

He offered compensation of 200,000 rupees ($3,020) to the families of the dead and 50,000 rupees ($755) to help the injured victims.

Chouhan has also ordered an inquiry into the matter.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi followed suit and conveyed his condolences on the micro-blogging site.

“Extremely pained at the loss of lives due to the cylinder blast in Jhabua,” Modi said.

‘Two Russian aid planes land in Syria’Damascus

Two Russian planes carrying humanitarian

aid landed in Syria yesterday, state media said, amid reports that Moscow is beefing up military support to its ally Damascus.

“Two Russian planes arrived today at the Latakia Martyr Bassil Al Assad international airport carrying 80 tonnes of humanitarian aid provided by Russia,” state news reported.

Coastal Latakia province is a stronghold of President Bashar

Al Assad and home to his ancestral village.

The reported aid delivery comes as Washington expressed concern about an alleged Russian military build-up in Syria.

US officials say Russia

has sent ships, armoured personnel carriers and naval infantry to the country in recent weeks.

And on Friday, Cypriot officials said Russia had issued an alert for Cyprus to divert aircraft next week because it

is planning military exercises off Syria’s coast. Also Friday, US President Barack Obama said Russia’s decision to send military advisors and equipment to bolster Assad was only extending a strategy “doomed to failure.”

“The strategy that they are pursuing right now, doubling down on Assad, I think is a big mistake,” Obama said.

Moscow and Syria have denied any Russian military build-up, but Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said

on Thursday that Damascus would receive additional help if it requested it.

“We helped, are continuing to help and will help the Syrian government when it comes to supplying the Syrian army with everything it needs,” he said.

“Russia is sending planes to Syria with both military equipment in accordance with current contracts and humanitarian aid,” he said.

“Russia is not taking any additional steps.”

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi yesterday

accepted the resignation of the government after it was rocked by a corruption scandal, and tasked the oil minister with forming a new cabinet.

A senior official said the resignation of premier Ibrahim Mahlab’s administration aimed to “pump new blood” into the government after the arrest on Monday of agriculture minister Salah Helal on suspicion of taking bribes.

The presidency said Sisi asked outgoing oil minister Sharif Ismail to form a new cabinet within a week.

Media had reported an impending reshuffle after Helal’s arrest following his resignation in connection with an investigation into

corruption. Helal and his chief of staff were accused of having “requested and received” bribes from a businessman, via an intermediary, to legalise the purchase of state property.

The government had denied reports of an impending reshuffle, and said no other ministers had been implicated in the corruption case.

But there have growing calls for Mahlab’s resignation and increasing protests by civil servants over a new law that centralises promotions while taxing bonuses.

“The main reason was the president was displeased with the job of some ministers, and his feeling that the government wasn’t achieving what he wanted, especially in light of complaints by citizens regarding services,” said Mostafa Kamel al Sayyed,

Mahlab’s resignation comes as Egypt prepares to hold long-delayed legislative elections in two phases

between October 17 and December 2.

The elections had initially been scheduled for early 2015 but were cancelled by a court on technical

grounds. Mahlab, who had headed the Arab Contractors construction firm, had been appointed by interim president Adly Mansour in March 2014, less than a year after the army toppled Islamist president Mohamed Morsi. He was viewed as a capable technocrat close to Sisi, the former army chief who removed Morsi and won the presidential election in May that year.

Ismail, who has experience in state-owned petroleum companies, had been the managing director of Ganoub El Wadi Petroleum Holding Company before his appointment as oil minister in July 2013 following Morsi’s overthrow.

Morsi’s removal and detention unleashed a deadly crackdown on Islamists that killed hundreds of protesters,

and the army has struggled to quash a jihadist insurgency in the Sinai Peninsula.

The government had enjoyed support in the face of militants who have killed hundreds of soldiers, but in recent months had come under fire for corruption and the unpopular civil service law.

There has also been growing discontent over a rise in food prices and slashes to a generous fuel subsidy system as Sisi pushes to narrow a budget deficit.

Sisi has been able to pass decrees virtually unchecked in the absence of a parliament, including the subsidy cuts that previous governments had shirked to avoid unrest.

The new parliament, expected to begin work by the end of the year, will review those laws.

Saudi Arabia on Friday responded to “false and

misleading” reports about its response to the Syrian refugee crisis, saying it has given residency to 100,000 people from the war-ravaged state.

The kingdom’s statement followed a similar defence issued on Wednesday by the United Arab Emirates, after questions started to be asked about how wealthy Arab states have reacted to the outflow of more than four million Syrians.

Germany alone is expected to receive 800,000 asylum-seekers from Syria and elsewhere this year.

Many more Syrians are sheltering in Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey. An official from

Saudi Arabia’s ministry of foreign affairs, cited by the official Saudi Press Agency, said the kingdom did not want “to show off or brag in

the media” about its response to Syria, where civil war began four years ago.

“However, it sees the importance of clarifying these

efforts in response to false and misleading media reports about the kingdom,” the unnamed official said.

Saudi Arabia “made it a point not to deal with them as refugees” but has issued residency permits to 100,000 Syrians who wished to stay in the kingdom, the official said.

“With that came the right to free education, healthcare and employment according

to a royal decree in 2012 that also states that Syrian students visiting the kingdom be admitted in public schools,” the official added.

The kingdom has supported millions of Syrian refugees in Jordan, Lebanon and other countries in coordination with the host countries, while providing a total of about $700 million in humanitarian aid, he said. (AFP)

Padalka - who has spent a total of 879 days in space over five separate trips - touched ground on the barren Kazakh steppe on schedule at 0051 GMT along with Kazakh cosmonaut Aidyn Aimbetov and Danish astronaut

Andreas Mogensen. “Landing has taken place,” a spokesman for Russia’s space agency Roscosmos said. “All is well.”

Padalka led the 44th expedition at the ISS, breaking a 10-year-old record for the total number of days spent in the cosmos on June 28 when he surpassed the figure of 803 days, nine hours and 41 minutes achieved by Sergei Krikalev, another Russian.

His most recent mission began on March 27 when he blasted off from the Baikonur

cosmodrome with compatriot Mikhail Kornienko and American Scott Kelly.

Mogensen, the first Dane in Space and Aimbetov, the third cosmonaut from his country, had a comparatively short stay at the ISS having entered space in the Soyuz TMA-18M on September 2 and docking two days later on September 4.

“I feel fine,” said Padalka as he sat sipping tea and nibbling on an apple surrounded by Russian space officials following his historic re-entry.

“Now you need to live on earth for a little bit,” joked Talgat Musabayev head of the Kazakh space agency Kazcosmos and a veteran of three space flights.

Padalka made four trips to ISS in total.

His first ever journey into space was to visit Russia’s Mir space station in 1998.

SAUDI FINALLY REACTSSays 100,000 Syrians given residency

Cairo

“The main reason was the president was displeased with the job of some ministers, and his feeling that the government wasn’t achieving what he wanted, especially in light of complaints by citizens regarding services,” said Mostafa Kamel al Sayyed,

a Cairo University political science professor.

Mahlab’s resignation comes as Egypt prepares to hold long-delayed legislative elections in two phases

Everton substitute Steven Naismith’s hat-trick secured a

3-1 win against Chelsea yesterday as the stuttering Premier League champions suffered their third defeat of the season.

Naismith, who came on early in the game, scored twice in the first half and capped a fine individual display with a third late on.

Nemanja Matic netted the pick of the game’s goals before the break with a spectacular long-range strike, but that will be of little consolation for Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, whose side have collected just four points from their opening five matches.

Chelsea’s defence, despite being boosted by the return of John Terry from suspension, looked shaky and indecisive throughout the contest and the margin of victory could well have been greater.

Everton suffered an early blow when Muhamed Besic was substituted in the ninth minute following an awkward collision with Kurt Zouma, which allowed Naismith to enter the fray.

It turned out to be a blessing for the Toffees, though, as Scotland international Naismith made an instant impact and put Roberto Martinez’s side ahead six minutes later with a well-crafted goal.

The forward deftly evaded

John Mikel Obi and Matic, slipped the ball out wide to the impressive Brendan Galloway, and then got in between Zouma and Terry to guide a header past Asmir Begovic. Everton went close to increasing their advantage

twice in the space of a couple of minutes as Begovic, deputising for the injured Thibaut Courtois made two fine diving saves.

First, Arouna Kone saw his header from Seamus Coleman’s cross tipped past the post, then

James McCarthy’s effort from distance was beaten away.

Swerving shot Everton’s determination to

capitalise on a spell of dominance was rewarded with a second goal and Naismith again was the scorer following neat build-up play involving Ross Barkley and Romelu Lukaku.

Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic declined to close down Naismith just outside the penalty area and the Scot responded to the space afforded him with an arrowed left-foot shot into the bottom-right corner of the net.

Equally poor closing down --

this time by Barkley -- allowed Chelsea to pull a goal back when Matic struck a swerving shot from 30 yards past the dive of Tim Howard and into the top corner.

Terry flashed a header over the crossbar, while Eden Hazard saw a deflected effort go just wide as Chelsea finished the half strongly.

However, Everton regained their momentum after half-time and Lukaku bustled his way into the box, but Begovic was well stationed to block his shot at the near post.

The Belgium striker, who joined Everton from Chelsea permanently in July 2014, also served as a useful outlet for the home side on the counter-attack.

Mourinho attempted to galvanise his side’s attacking potency with the introduction of striker Radamel Falcao for playmaker Pedro Rodriguez.

But the final word belonged to Naismith, who has now scored a third of his 18 Premier League goals in games against Chelsea.

The 28-year-old raced on to an intelligent through ball from Barkley and produced an adept finish from a tight angle past Begovic.

MARTIAL MAKES A SPLASH

Walcott, Giroud set up Arsenal’s flawless victory

Manchester

Anthony Martial scored a memorable debut goal as

Manchester United beat old enemies Liverpool 3-1 at Old Trafford yesterday to claim second place in the Premier League table.

The 19-year-old French striker signed from Monaco on transfer deadline day for a reported initial fee of £36 million ($55.1m, 49m euros), making him the world’s most expensive teenager, and he was quick to make his mark after coming on as a substitute for Juan Mata.

Christian Benteke had just halved United’s two-goal lead with a sensational overhead bicycle kick when Martial picked the ball up wide on the left, tip-toed between three defenders and tucked a shot into the bottom-right corner in front of the Stretford End.

Second-half goals from Daley Blind and Ander Herrera had put United in control and Martial’s strike provided the perfect finale to an evening that had begun with David de Gea returning to the United goal following the collapse of his move to Real Madrid.

Victory saw Louis van Gaal’s side return to winning ways following their 2-1 defeat at Swansea City and left them in second place, above Arsenal on goal difference and five points below leaders Manchester City.

Benteke’s breath-taking goal had briefly given Liverpool hope, but instead manager Brendan Rodgers was left to

reflect on a second successive defeat following their 3-0 loss at home to West Ham United.

Wayne Rooney returned to Manchester this week having created a piece of history in mid-week by scoring a record-breaking 50th England goal, but he was ruled out by injury, so Marouane Fellaini started up front with Martial on the bench.

There were cheers for De Gea as he took his place in goal and the Spaniard was given a gentle re-introduction to life at Old Trafford as United immediately put the visitors on the back foot.

It was from a mistake by De Gea’s opposite number Simon Mignolet that United’s best first-half chance stemmed, the Belgian bowling the ball straight at Mata, but although the ball fell kindly at Fellaini’s feet, the former Everton midfielder chipped well over.

United made a change at the interval, Ashley Young replacing Memphis Depay, and the substitute was quick to make his presence felt, darting between two Liverpool defenders on the left and winning a free-kick that yielded the opening goal.

Blind strikes

Mata rolled the set-piece to the edge of the box and with Bastian Schweinsteiger blocking off Nathaniel Clyne at the near post, Blind had the freedom of the penalty area to pick his spot.

Moments later, Blind found Schweinsteiger barrelling into the box following a short corner on the United left, but the

Germany midfielder could not take the ball in his stride.

It had been a stress-free return for De Gea up to that point, but he found himself in the firing line as the hour-mark approached.

First, his scuffed kick let in Roberto Firmino, whose low cross towards Benteke was alertly cut out by Chris Smalling, before a volley from Danny Ings -- in for the suspended Philippe Coutinho -- obliged him to spring to his right and tip the ball behind for a corner.

Shortly after, Blind came to United’s rescue, clearing Martin Skrtel’s header off his own goal-line and then flying out to thwart Firmino when the ball came back into the box.

Martial made his United bow in the 65th minute, replacing Mata, and within five minutes the home side had doubled their lead.

Referee Michael Oliver pointed to the spot after Liverpool’s teenage left-back Joe Gomez recklessly slid in on Herrera and the Spaniard slammed home the penalty.

Jordon Ibe’s introduction enlivened Liverpool, the 19-year-old extending De Gea with a left-foot strike and then teeing up Benteke’s spectacular goal with a deflected cross from the right.

But barely a minute later Martial stole everyone’s thunder, slaloming into the box from wide on the left to give the United faithful a new hero to serenade.

With the subject of scoring a sore one lately as Arsenal

clocked up goal-shy home games, failed to buy any glorious predators, and then lost Danny Welbeck to the injury black hole for months, Arsène Wenger watched Theo Walcott and

Olivier Giroud do the business. Whether either (or both) can lead a Premier League title challenge remains head-scratchingly central to the Arsenal narrative these days. But they did what was needed against an uninspiring Stoke.

Both forwards endured the odd

excruciating miss, yet persevered to finish off in the contrasting styles that makes the either/or such a bewildering question. Walcott’s goal was all about profiting from a pacy move. Giroud’s was a show of aerial strength from a set piece. Fuse them together and Arsenal might just have Wenger’s ideal for a leading man up front, but in the current formation he tends to choose one or the other. Decisions, decisions ...

With the team desperate to get back to scoring ways, he was certainly involved early on, with two fine chances falling his way in the first eight minutes as Arsenal tore into Stoke with serious intent.

The first chance, a rebound screwed wide after Alexis Sánchez’s header was clawed on to the post, was not one for the scrapbook. The second, invited by Héctor Bellerín’s tantalising cross, was steered over.

Stoke looked utterly bamboozled early on. Sánchez was in the shooting mood, and it was only the excellence of Jack Butland that denied the Chilean the chance to add his name to the scoresheet. The Stoke goalkeeper was also in fine form to repel Laurent Koscielny and Santi Cazorla as shots assailed him from all angles.

Arsenal’s moment arrived in the 31st minute. Mesut Özil picked up the ball and suddenly Wenger’s team

were all about pace: Özil’s lobbed pass moved the ball forward quickly and Walcott showed the strength to hold off Marc Muniesa before jabbing in the opening goal.

In its execution it vindicated the logic behind Wenger’s choice of Walcott over Giroud. “I knew we would face Stoke who are a compact and organised team and Theo could find little pockets to get in there,” said the Frenchman.

Stoke, whose only meaningful chance in the opening half saw Petr Cech parry from Joselu, were flattered by a scoreline of only 1-0 by halftime.

Giroud was bought on for the last 15 minutes and his first touch of the ball was to drag horribly wide when presented with a one on one by some equally horrible Stoke defending. But, like Walcott, he kept at it and was rewarded with the goal that made the points safe. After he finished off a corner with a neat near-post header to end a difficult week, his relief was palpable.

Roger Federer hopes to ride a wave of emotion as he targets a

sixth US Open title and 18th major tomorrow in a “straight shootout” against world number one Novak Djokovic. Roger Federer says he has his flawless serving to thank for his serene progress to the US Open final as he prepares for the showdown at Flushing Meadows.

At the US Open, he has held serve in 80 of 82 games and has stunned opponents with his new ‘SABR’ (‘Sneak Attack By Roger’) chip-and-charge tactic.

His semi-final demolition of French Open champion and compatriot Stan Wawrinka was as brutal as Djokovic’s dismantling of defending champion Marin Cilic.

The top seed allowed the Croatian just three games in the most lopsided semi-final in tournament history.

Federer also has the crowd on his side as he pursues his first Grand Slam title since Wimbledon in 2012.

The 34-year-old is bidding to become the oldest champion in New York since 3 5 - y e a r - o l d Australian Ken Rosewall in 1970.

Playing in his 27th Grand Slam final and seventh at the US Open, F e d e r e r , t h e c h a m p i o n f r o m 2004-2008 a n d runner-up in 2009, is a man reborn.

A f t e r l o s i n g h i s s e c o n d

Wimbledon final in

succession to Djokovic in July,

the Swiss veteran beat the Serb on his way to a seventh Cincinnati Masters

crown.

He h a s a l s o

not dropped a set since his All England Club defeat, a stretch of 28 sets.

“I definitely t h i n k if there would be more on m y side that will g i v e me a lift a n d extra energy a n d momentum possibly. That could s w i n g the match a little bit,” said Federer, aware that despite his status as w o r l d n u m b e r o n e , D j o k o v i c o f t e n struggles to

command a crowd’s respect.

“But other than that, obviously Novak is a great player. Both of us have played in all tough conditions, and you’ve got to play well to beat him. There is no question about

that.” There could be spiky sub-plots.

D j o k o v i c h a s

b e e n a l m o s t dismissive of Federer’s n e w c h i p - a n d -charge off a second serve.

“I haven’t considered doing that. It’s an exciting shot for him. For the player opposite side of the net, not so much. So I have nothing else to say about that,” said the Serb on Friday.

Federer takes a 21-20 lead over Djokovic into Sunday’s final.

He also leads 3-2 in US Open meetings -- including the 2007 championship match -- but Djokovic won the last two, in the 2010 and 2011 semi-finals.

Both those went to five sets.Federer says he knows what

to expect from Djokovic, claiming that Rafael Nadal was the player who tested him the most.

“With Novak it’s been more straightforward. That’s what I like about the rivalry. I feel like he doesn’t need to adjust his game as much,” said the Swiss.

“I think it’s just a straight shootout, and I think that’s the cool thing about our

rivalry. “It’s very athletic. We both can handle each other -- whatever we present to one another, and I think our matches, it’s very even.”

Djokovic will be playing in his

sixth US Open final, having been champion in 2011 and his 18th in all Grand Slams.

Sunday’s meeting will be the pair’s sixth of 2015, all in finals.

Djokovic has been almost dismissive of Federer’s new chip-and-charge off a second

serve aka SABR.‘I haven’t considered doing that. It’s an exciting shot for him. For the player opposite side of the

net, not so much. So I have nothing else to say about that,’ says the World No. 1

FEDERER TO FACE DJOKOVIC TODAY

AN ITALIAN JOB WELL DONEUS Open champ retires after win

New York

Flavia Pennetta won her first Grand Slam singles title yesterday,

defeating Italian compatriot Roberta Vinci 7-6 (7/4), 6-2 in the US Open women’s final, then promptly retired.

Pennetta became, at 33, the oldest first-time Grand Slam women’s champion in the Open era with the 93-minute triumph.

“It’s a dream come true,” Pennetta said.

But only moments after accepting the trophy, she said she had decided to retire after her ultimate victory.

“This is the way I would like to say goodbye to tennis,” Pennetta said. “I’m really happy.”

The only other Italian woman to win a major singles title was Francesca Schiavone, who captured the 2010 French Open and set the former oldest

first-timer age mark at 29. “I’m really happy right now,” said Pennetta, a 150-1 longshot to win the title when the Flushing Meadows fortnight began. “Before this tournament I never think to be so far. I never think to be a champion. When things come like this it’s a big surprise to me.”

Italian prime minister Matteo Renzi was among 23,771 in Arthur Ashe Stadium watching the first all-Italian women’s Grand Slam final of the Open Era.

Pennetta took the top prize of $3.3 million (2.9m euros), while runner-up Vinci received $1.6m.

Pennetta previously had won only $712,401 this year while Vinci’s 2015 prize money before Sunday was $422,158.

The breakthrough win came in Pennetta’s 49th Grand Slam

appearance, the most needed for any women’s major champion, two more than France’s Marion Bartoli when she won at Wimbledon in 2013. “Always when I was younger I was thinking to be number one,” Pennetta said. “I was also thinking to win Rome but I think Grand Slam may be a little better.”

Pennetta, ranked 26th, and Vinci, ranked 43rd, each played in her first Grand Slam final after pulling a semi-final shocker.

Vinci shattered the hopes of Serena Williams to achieve the first calendar Slam since 1988 with a semi-final win over the top-ranked defending champion while Pennetta dispatched Romania’s second-ranked Simona Halep.

“It was tough,” Vinci said of returning after the emotional drain of ousting Williams. “I passed the 24 hours with a lot of things on my mind. I was really tired especially in the first set, but I was in the US Open final so I was really happy.”

Friends since childhood in southern Italy, Vinci, 32, and Pennetta had the oldest combined ages of any Open Era Grand Slam final duo, beating the former mark of just under 64 years from when

Virginia Wade beat Betty Stove in the 1977 Wimbledon final. “It’s tough to play against one player you know from a long time,” Vinci said. “Was tough today but I tried to do my best. Flavia played unbelievable today. Great match.”

Pennetta, who took a 6-4 lead in the career rivalry, leaped to a career-best eighth in the rankings with her 11th career title, the first since last year at Indian Wells.

The first US Open women’s championship match between Grand Slam finalist debutantes saw Pennetta force seven break points against Vinci before breaking through for a 3-2 edge in the first set. Vinci hit a backhand crosscourt winner to earn her first break point in the eighth game and Pennetta netted a backhand to pull Vinci even at 4-4 on the way to a tie-break.

Pennetta won five of the last seven points in the decider, the last on a service winner to claim the opening set after an hour. Vinci broke back in the fifth game, a Pennetta drop shot leading to a Vinci overhead smash, and held but Pennetta regained momentum with a lob winner to hold and grab a 5-2 edge, then broke for the win.
