ENID Projects Map 2016
A. Promoting MSMEs and Entrepreneurship B. Sustainable Agricultural Development C. Upgrading Basic Services
Strengths: • Labor intensive activities are easy to
introduce and have great employment potential because the wages are much lower in the South.
• The climate in Qena makes it a perfect host of many agricultural interventions as well as several handicrafts.
• Gender education and employment reduces the fertility rate and improves children’s nutrition and well being.
Weaknesses: • Entrepreneurship: Challenges faced by youth in
general and women in particular are limited skills, difficult access to financial resources, lack of business and marketing information and bureaucracy/complication of procedures.
• Markets are biased against self-employed women and women entrepreneurs on account of widespread illiteracy, and low skills.
• Space has a very high cost in rural Egypt (building on agricultural land is forbidden by law)
Opportunities: • Huge potential in the RMG industry for local
and export markets given the female advantage in this industry. Other sectors include wood and leather.
• The growth in Development NGOs in the South provides a stepping stone to women empowerment via women representation and access to management skills and leadership.
• Unexploited potential of Desert Fringe (Zaheer Sahrawy)
Threats: • The fear of harassment affects the decision of many
women to accept jobs that are far from home, have late hours and are dominated by male co-workers which is the case for most private sector jobs.
• Convincing community that work of girls is acceptable
• Identifying Community leaders with good track records

To date, a total of 433 women joined literacy classes in eight villages in Qena. A total of 19 literacy course were completed since 2014.
• Vocational Workshops: Following their literacy education, a total of 257 women were registered in vocational training workshops. All in all, 14 batches have been graduated since the program has become operational.

• El Nidaa trained 30 university students on entrepreneurship and soft-skills with curriculum tailored to their needs and they has started teaching the beneficiaries.
Design and Marketing – MSMEs Design & Marketing has been the most challenging obstacle for promoting MSMEs and entrepreneurship in Upper Egypt: • ENID/El Nidaa’s marketing strategy is based on product differentiation that
focuses on creating a marketable and competitive product. Products are sold at local and international exhibitions & Cairo-based artisanal stores.
• We have considered a number of best practice options from India and Thailand to promote the sales of crafts. The key feature is to identify sales venues and to rent space on behalf of crafts and small enterprises.
• ENID/El Nidaa explored the potential to export handicrafts to Europe and the Gulf countries early on. Early success has been made with the export of jewelry products to the British Museum.
• The need for continuous revision of design has been another hurdle in production.
Design and Marketing – MSMEs Stores El Nidaa has secured several sales outlets for its products in • El Fustat historical and touristic area
in old Cairo, • El Sharjah, UAE to cater to the Gulf
customers • “Creative Egypt”. • El Nidaa also has a sales outlet in
Luxor, the urban center, and has a whole floor to display our products in town.
• In Qena itself, the NCW has offered El Nidaa Foundation its entire ground floor to use on a permanent basis to exhibit and sell the output of all El Nidaa women beneficiaries and is situated in the commercial center of Qena city.
Exhibitions, El Nidaa participates in two major furniture exhibitions each year, FURNEX Cairo and INDEX Dubai as well as other sales in bazaars and El Nidaa showroom in Cairo. In FURNEX and INDEX, El Nidaa showcased its first range of wood furniture including benches, side tables, stools and bedrooms. Throughout both exhibitions, El Nidaa was able to produce high quality for each of the products displayed in its catalogue

ENID’s Donor Partners
ENID/El Nidaa Lessons Learnt • Women’s participation in the job market depends on opportunities and not on
conservative gender norms. Absence of knowledge of viable projects is also a key problem.
• The key to introducing efficient interventions for women employment is to work on the ground directly with those in need.
• ENID/El Nidaa’s experience working closely with TVET schools show that the system can be reformed within a short time.
• The state budget is a statement of priorities set by the state. It is normally neutral towards gender needs and yet does not achieve equal opportunity for women.
• The inherited culture of civil society organizations (CSOs) is charity work. The positive trend towards capacity building for skills and employment of beneficiaries.
• Importance of local NGOs capacity to secure sustainability • Importance of partnership building with the concerned governmental bodies • Importance of securing local participation in planning, implementing and
evaluating the intervention.
