The Continuation of Harvey^s Visit to the SaskatchewanIndian Federated College

On the third of August, Harvey Behn left to Regina to attend theSaskatchewan Indian Federated College.

Harvey enrolled in the Administration 320. This delt with band planning.Basically the course description is as follows

Administration I 320-3 ^credU university ieve- course

- Nature of planning- Steps in planning- The goal identification step- The situation appraised step

- The action alternate step

- The action assessment step

- The selection step

Harvey feels this was very helpful, because using what he had learned inthis class he will be more able to plan for himself and for the band-. He

would also recommend this for the program managers and administrators.

Harvey also visited the State of Montana, on August 17-18, while he wasthere he visited a reservation called Fort Peck. He contacted the tribal

board and they assigned a board member to give hirn a tour of the reserve.Jonny Bearcub Stiffarm, who is a tribal board member, introduced him tothree other board members, which he had talked to. They discussed theirtribal government.

Harvey also spoke to an elder from their reserve. Tne nospitalitv that tneyhad shown was very good and he felt very welcome.

After Harvey completed the course, he then drove back to Hobbema(Montana Band)Alberta and visited the Montana Band upon tne invitation ofLilian Potts, their former chief and Eunice Louis (office manager). Thereserve is situated about 50 miles Southeast of Edmonton, it has a

population of about 460 people.

Harvey toured the reserve with the office manager. The reserve is largelyfarmland and seemed well develooed. He was taken through the reserve andviewed the administrative facility, it was a multi purpose complex, housing administration offices, a museum, a daycare centre, an arts andcrafts centre, a cafeteria, a fully eauipec weicnt room, a oynr anc

Page 5: EH p-mthings, like part in the "SHOT If you want' to take part in this >e.xciting new adventur if you want to get involved in this activity which has possibilities, If you want all

Harvey was very impressed with the quality of the facilities and thehomes. The facilities were unrivalled compared to anything he had everseen. The homes were the same including the appearance of the yards. Thepeople were very friendly and showed him the greatest kindness. Harveyfeels the band is preparing itself for the future by putting education andeconomic development as their top priorities.

Conclusion

The places that Harvey visited had reinforced his belief that the future ofIndian people in North America are aright and that we are working veryhard to achieve that goal.

in education at 5IFC, they have an Indian perspective and under Indiancontrol. These two aspects give us the ability to meet our needs and tocompete with greater competence in the unforgiving world that we live.

The reserve that he visited showed him that we seem to be workingtowards a common goal and that goal being a better future for our people.

Harvey returned on August 24, and if..anyone would like to talk to himabout the trip, please come into the office and he'll gladly talk to youabout it.

This year we had 7 students go on the field trip to Edmonton. There were13 eligible students.

We toured the West Edmonton Mall, went to a zoo and went out for a

Japanese supper. The students also got to go on the water slides and had agood time on them. We went for supper on the last night we were thereand ate at a revolving restaurant. Tne restaurant doesn't revolve veryfast, in fact you can hardly notice. I won't mention any names but a coupleof our students actually got sick. (Ha Ha).

Not too many pictures were taken this time but 1have a few. Most ofthem were taken at the Zoo in Edmonton. We had our pictures taken in

Edmonton in a studio where we dressed up in the olden days. Peter andDelbert looked great in their costumes. They really looked their parts.Actually everyone looked great in their costumes.

There was one funny thing happened to us in the restaurant at our Hotel. While we were having our supper, 3 mouse came out. Peter Williscroftsaw it first, but nobody would believe hirn because he was such a tease, ithought 1would humor him so I looked. 1yelled "there it is!". Everybodyiooked and Angela jumped up and said "I love Mice!" and she chased itaround in the restaurant. Meanwhile we were getting some real funnylooks from the other people that were in the restaurant. Quite

embarrassing but funny.

in the next few pictures you will see us at the Japanese restaurant wherethe cook will cook in front of us. These Japanese suppers are a big hit.The kids really enjoy themselves. You will also see a picture of the groupthat went on the field trip taken at the Zoo. Lenora and Lovey reallyenjoyed themselves. You can tell by the big HUG they gave Humpty Durnpty. You will see Delbert got thirsty and took a drink out of a Hippopotamus'smouth.

if anyone is interested in seeing some pictures 1 will have them at theoffice for a couple of days.

Yours truly

Leline Kotchea
