American Artists Professional League MEMBERsHIP

The American Artists Professional League, Inc. was organized in 1928 to help artists solve their professional problems. The League has a long record of constructive help, such as setting standards of quality for pigments and promoting competent, understandable art.

Categories of membership in the AAPL are as follows: Elected Artist Member, Fellow, Associate Member, Patron, Sponsor and Benefactor.

Elected Artist Members are those who have applied and have been approved by the Membership Committee of the National Board of Directors.

Fellows are our top-ranking active members. After becoming an Artist Member and then accepted in our Grand National Exhibition for three years, not necessarily consecutively, an Artist Member automatically becomes a Fellow.

Associate Membership offers a unique opportunity to individuals interested in encouraging, promoting, and supporting fine art and is open to both artists and non-artists. Associate members receive the bi-annual newsletters, Prospectus, the Grand National Exhibition catalog, and invitations to the annual reception and all art demonstrations.

Patrons, sponsors and Benefactors are those who consider our high objectives worthy of backing and would like to make a donation to our efforts through the American Artists Fund, the charitable, educational adjunct of the AAPL. Coherent fine art urgently needs the solid support of American art patrons.

Contribution levels for Patrons, Associate Members, Sponsors or Benefactors are as follows:

Patron Member -- $25Associate Member -- $30Sponsor Member -- $50

Benefactor Member $100 or more

Contributions for Patron, Associate, Sponsor and Benefactor Membership are fully tax deductible. Make all checks payable to the American Artists Fund and mail c/o The American Artists Professional League, 47 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY 10003.

APPLIcATION

To receive an application for membership as an Elected Artist member or an Associate member, please send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to: American Artists Professional League, 47 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY 10003 or visit our website (www.americanartistsprofessionalleague.org).

We, the members of The American Artists Professional League, are most grateful for the added support of these valued members and friends, especially in these times of ever increasing costs. IN MEMORIAMANGELO JOHN GRADO

President Emeritus Angelo John Grado died in May 2012. Angelo John served as AAPL President for many years, and remained an active participant with the organization after leaving the Board. He worked primarily in oil and pastel, painting portraits, still life and landscapes.

Born in New York City, Angelo John began drawing as a child and Norman Rockwell was his idol; he saved Saturday Evening Post magazine cover reproductions of all Rockwell paintings from the 1930’s on, and had one of the largest Rockwell tear sheet collections in the country. He began his career as an advertising art director and then went on to own an advertising agency. He decided to pursue a career in painting and studied at the Art Students League; he also studied at the National Academy of Design and the Frank Reilly School of Art. In the early 1970’s, he ended his work in the commercial art field and began to focus on painting full time. In 1985, Angelo John wrote the book Mastering the Craft of Painting which was published by Watson-Guptill Publications.

During his lifetime, Angelo John Grado had 15 solo exhibitions and participated in hundreds of group shows – he received over 80 awards in national competitions. In addition to a long tenure with the AAPL, he was also an active member of the American Watercolor Society, the Hudson valley Art Association and was a Master Pastelist in the Pastel Society of America. He taught at the National Art League for 25 years. His paintings are in private collections in the United States, Canada, England, Norway, Italy, virgin Islands and the Philippines.

PERRY ALLEY

Devoted AAPL member Perry Alley passed away on March 31, 2012. Perry belonged to the AAPL organization for over 40 years and dedicated countless hours of his time each year as the AAPL gallery attendant during the Grand National Exhibitions and Member Shows. He was well known to many, meeting and greeting visitors and artists alike.

Perry, one of twin sons, was born in Ellsworth, Maine and grew up in Yonkers. Encouraged by his parents to pursue artistic endeavors, he studied with J. Winthrop Andrews and Elsie M. Conner; he continued his art education with John Newton Howitt at the Westchester County Center Workshop in White Plains, NY and with Sidney Dickenson at the Art Students League of New York.

After serving in the US Navy during World War II, Perry was employed by the Alexander Smith Design Department of rugs and carpets. He also began his art career joining the Yonkers Art Association. Initially, Perry gained a reputation for painting small oil landscapes; due to time constraints from his work, his art gradually evolved into pencil drawing focusing on Plein Aire subject matters varying from trees to old homes and historic sites. He was known to always draw with his left hand, while standing; his sketchbooks were small – approximately 4” x 6” – and he never used an eraser.

In addition his long time association with the American Artists Professional League, Perry was affiliated with the Hudson Valley Art Association for decades and served as its Treasurer for twenty-five years. He was also a long-standing member of the Academic Artists Association in Springfield, Mass. A consistent award winner, Perry has work hanging in the permanent collection of Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia and in many private collections throughout the United States and Canada.

CREATED IN 1928 BY DEDICATED ARTISTS OF STATURE FOR THE PROTECTION OF ARTISTS’ INTERESTS, AND TRADITIONAL REALISM IN AMERICAN ART.

THE AMERIcAN ARTIsTsPROFEssIONAL LEAGUE

In January 1928, F. Ballard Williams, Assistant Treasurer of the National Academy of Design in New York, called a meeting of fifteen members of the Salmagundi Club. The purpose: to discuss the need for a national organization to meet the increasing interests in traditional realism in American art. Most attending were prominent academicians of their day. The attendees all agreed that an organization designed to protect artists’ interests and promote traditional American art was necessary and The American Artists Professional League (AAPL) was born.

The AAPL first focused on the issue of obtaining commissions of official portraits for American Artists. By using its national stature, the AAPL influenced a rider to a Congressional Bill stipulating that all official portraits paid for with taxpayers’ dollars were to be painted by American artists, a fact that remains in effect to this day.

Another milestone for the organization was the improvement of the chemical and physical purity of artists’ pigments. By securing a fund from the Carnegie Corporation Endowment Fund, a program of color pigment research was established for the AAPL. It was completed in 1932, making the AAPL the country’s leading authority on artists’ pigments at that time. The AAPL was also instrumental in establishing and securing the U.S. Bureau of Standards original set of government-sponsored standards for artists’ colors, updated in 1962.

In its ongoing effort to promote and encourage artists specializing in realistic art forms, the AAPL has staged a Grand National Exhibition for over 70 years. Each year, hundreds of applicants from all 50 states in all media submit their work for review by a selection committee consisting of professional artists in the fields of oil, watermedia, pastel and graphics and sculpture. By Board resolution in 1958, the AAPL created the American Artists Fund, an arm of the organization specifically designed for educational and charitable purposes. Through private and corporate donations and contributions to the Fund, the AAPL sponsors its Grand National Exhibition and awards scholarships to college level students studying American art. This year, the AAPL will award over $13,000 in prizes to exhibitors and has marked $2,000 for college scholarships.

The AAPL, is headquartered at the Salmagundi Club, 47 Fifth Avenue, New York, New York 10003.Tel. (212) 645-1345, e-mail: [email protected]. visit our website at: http://www.americanartistsprofessionalleague.org.
