COMMUNITY-BASED SUSTAINABLE DESIGN + INFORMATION MANAGEMENT

30,000 SF Building-Integrated Photovoltaics [BI-PV] Rooftop Generates 1 MWh Daily Since 1984

Georgetown University Intercultural Center Washington, DC Photo © 2002 Eileen M. Smith, M.Arch. Summary of Research Interests and Professional Activities My work in architecture and urban planning is oriented in Community-based design solutions. One of my first problem-solving projects to come to fruition through Community was the development of the Yates Center Teen Center coordinating resources, talent, local businesses and artisans to create a unique environment with and for the youth of my hometown. When it was completed as President I booked and managed performing arts activities. The Communality approach to design followed at Kansas State University where I wrote a series of articles on Architectural Heritage for the Flint Fortnightly News Magazine. My thesis for the Master’s of Architecture degree at the University of Kansas focused on evaluating 84 case studies of Seven Cities In Four Nations. The goal was to delineate and impact decision-making activities that determine the line within which we live, work and play. Historic Preservation and Development Decisions; The Architect’s Role in Conflict and Cooperation A Cross-Cultural Study was compiled as an analysis tool using extensive use of historic documents, interviews, ongoing inquiry, photography, public forums, policy studies, negotiations and writing. The skills proved highly valuable in my work to bring building-integrated photovoltaic [BI-PV] solar electricity into the mainstream market.
