ince the fantastic pilot episode “New Girl” struggled to find it’s feet, with the loss of the Damon

Wayans Jr. and bringing in Winston (Lamorne Morris), But now as the show has been running for nearly the full first series, it’s just got better and better, with all the characters really coming into there own.

At the start, the show was too forcefully trying to make us love Zooey Deschanel’s naif cuteness and seemed as if all the focus was going to be on her character. Fortunately the writters have been very clever and developed the show, exploring and building each character to make the show, well just fantasticly funny.

One of my favourite supporting cast id Nick (Jake Johnson) with his sometimes sureal rants, like in the recent episode “Fancyman, Part 1,” where he is absolutely hilarious or in the earlier episode “Injured,” which explored the sadness of Nick’s cranky-poor-guy character by giving him a cancer scare and confronting what he’s doing—or

not—with his life, show a more emotional side to him and the show.

Thankfully now, the show has become the ensemble it needs to be. It’s called New Girl, but that means not that it’s about Jess but about Jess’ newness in this circle of friends, and how the change has shaken each of the characters’ routines. It’s a sitcom, at least in part, about the invigorating power of change. And maybe it’s not coincidence that the first character the writers really got a handle on was Schmidt (Max Greenfield), who was originally the subject of douchebag jokes but who has been real comic gold for his reactions when his fussy habits are threatened—his reactions during the great towel war a or to Jess’ sidewalk-salvaged pine china hutch, have been side-splitting.

Making the show more about the ensemble has helped it be a fun hangout comedy while still teasing out the hints of darkness behind some of the humor: Winston’s career disappointments, Schmidt’s

insecurities, Nick’s defensive apathy, Jess’ heartbreak and frustrated idealism. More important, its voice has just gotten more confident, and very, very funny.

We are nearly at the end of the first series with news already of a second, so getting watching those past episodes as they are well worth the watch.

Embrace autumn with a great, big hug of a dish: comforting mince and dumplings..

2 tbsp sunflower oil1 large onion, thinly sliced2 garlic cloves, finely chopped2 celery sticks, peeled, finely sliced2 medium carrots, diced500g/1lb 2oz lean beef mince1 x 400g/14oz can chopped tomatoes2 tbsp tomato purée350ml/12fl beef stock

150ml/5fl oz red winepinch caster sugar1 bay leafsalt and freshly ground black pepper

250g/10oz self-raising flour, plus extra for rolling125g/5oz shredded beef suet½ tsp fine sea salt2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley

1. Heat the oil in a large saucepan or flameproof casserole and cook the onion, garlic, celery and carrots for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally until soft and pale golden-brown.

2. Add the minceand cook for a further five minutes.

3. Add the tomatoes, tomato purée, beef stock, red wine, sugar and bay leaf. Add a good pinch of salt and freshly ground black pepper. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer gently for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

4. For the dumplings, put the flour in a bowl and stir in the suet, salt and parsley. Make a well in the centre and add enough cold water - you’ll need around 200ml/7fl oz - to mix to a soft, spongy dough. Use lightly floured hands to roll into 12 small balls.

5. Place the dumplings carefully on top of the mince. Cover with a tight-fitting lid and cook over a medium heat for 18-20 minutes, or until the dumplings are cooked through and well risen.
