Mission & Vision

Mission Statement The mission of the EKU Honors Program is to provide its students with the best intellectual resources available at the university in order to empower them to attain their highest academic and professional goals. We develop the whole student by way of our interdisciplinary, small classes, our support of student research and travel to regional and national conferences, and our offering of a wide variety of cultural and out-of-classroom experiences.

Vision Statement The EKU Honors Program aspires to national recognition as an

exemplary program. Our graduates will be successful in their chosen academic and professional paths, as well as informed and

responsible citizens in their local communities and the world. We will build on our traditional strengths by extending honors

opportunities to broader segments of the EKU student body while continuing to

cultivate a spirit of creative and

innovative learning and teaching

throughout the EKU community.

Admission & Application

Requirements

EKU Honors utilizes an annual application cycle. New students are only admitted to Honors for the fall semester, unless the student qualifies as an automatic transfer (see “For Students Transferring to EKU” on pg. 7). Students must apply and be accepted into EKU before they apply for EKU Honors. Students should plan ahead to ensure that they will be accepted as an EKU student and still have time to complete the Honors application before the Honors deadline. The Honors application is found online at the Honors website (http://www.honors.eku.edu). The application will open on the first Monday of August each year, and the deadline for submitting applications is the second Monday in January each year. No late applications will be accepted. The Honors application includes the online application, an essay responding to one of several topics listed, a résumé, and a letter of recommendation. Students must submit each part of the application for it to be considered complete. All parts of the application must be submitted by the deadline. All applications to EKU Honors are reviewed after the application deadline has passed. All students will be notified of their application status beginning in mid-February. Students who are accepted into EKU Honors must confirm their place by May 1, following the instructions in their acceptance packet. Students who do not confirm their place in EKU Honors by the May 1 deadline are not considered part of the incoming Honors class and are not members of EKU Honors.

Admission & Application Requirements

For incoming first-year students: EKU Honors has a limited number of spots for incoming first-year students each year. Incoming first-year students are eligible to apply to EKU Honors during the annual application cycle and are only eligible to begin in the fall semester. The admissions targets for incoming first-year students are a 27 ACT (or SAT equivalent) and a 3.50 unweighted high school GPA. These targets do not mean that students who meet both of these targets are automatically accepted into Honors, nor are students who do not meet these requirements excluded. EKU Honors uses a holistic application review process. Each applicant’s entire application is reviewed by the selection committee, and all parts of a student’s application are considered when making an admission decision. Students who have been identified as National Merit Finalists or National Merit Semi-Finalists are automatically accepted into EKU Honors; however, these students must still complete an information form available via the Honors website (http://honors.eku.edu/NMFSF). Students who have completed the Governor’s Scholars Program or the Governor’s School for the Arts are strongly encouraged to apply for admission to EKU Honors.

For current EKU students: EKU Honors accepts current EKU students each year. Current

EKU students are eligible to apply to EKU Honors during the annual application cycle and are only eligible to begin in the fall

semester. The admissions target for current EKU students is a 3.0 cumulative college GPA. This target does not mean that students who meet this target are automatically accepted into Honors, nor are students who do not meet this requirement excluded. EKU

Honors uses a holistic application review process. Each applicant’s entire application is reviewed by the selection committee, and all

parts of a student’s application are considered when making an admission decision.

Admission & Application Requirements

For students transferring to EKU: EKU Honors accepts transfer students each year in one of two ways: Transfer students who are currently in good standing in an

honors program or college at their current institution are eligible for automatic transfer into EKU Honors. These automatic transfer students are eligible to begin EKU Honors in either the fall or spring semesters, as long as all required documentation is received prior to the beginning of the semester in which the student would like to begin. Required documentation for automatic transfer includes a letter from the student’s current honors program or college director, stating that the student is in good standing, as well as a transcript from the student’s current institution. Students who are interested in the automatic transfer office do not need to complete the Honors application. Instead, these students should contact the Honors office or visit http://honors.eku.edu/who-can-apply#Transfer for more information and instruction.

Transfer students who are not currently in an honors program

or college at their current institution should complete the Honors application during the annual application cycle. These students are only eligible to begin EKU Honors in the fall semester. The admissions target for transfer students is a 3.0 cumulative college GPA. This target does not mean that students who meet this target are automatically accepted into the Honors, nor are students who do not meet this requirement excluded. EKU Honors uses a holistic application review process. Each applicant’s entire application is reviewed by the selection committee, and all parts of a student’s application are considered when making an admission decision.

Scholarships &

Other Awards All active EKU Honors students are eligible for the following scholarships and awards: Honors Presidential Tuition Scholarship - $1750 per semester for up to eight semesters EKU does not typically stack tuition scholarships. Students who enter EKU Honors as new, first-time freshmen will receive the highest EKU tuition scholarship for which they qualify. Only if an incoming Honors student does not receive a higher tuition scholarship than the Honors Presidential scholarship will the student receive that award. Students who join EKU Honors as currently enrolled EKU students will continue to receive the EKU tuition scholarship they were awarded upon entry to EKU and will receive the Honors Presidential Scholarship if they were not awarded another such scholarship.

Incoming transfer students may sometimes be able to stack scholarships. Please contact the Scholarship Office (http://www.scholarships.eku.edu) for more information. Honors Books-on-Loan Award – books for all courses that are available at the EKU Bookstore for up to eight semesters All Honors students, regardless of tuition scholarship, will receive the Honors Books-on-Loan award. This award provides books for all courses, as long as those books are available through the EKU Bookstore. These books must be returned to the EKU Bookstore at the end of each semester. If students wish to keep books for their own reference, they may do so by purchasing the books at a reduced rate from the EKU Bookstore.

9th and 10th Semester Scholarships Some students may require an additional semester or year to complete their degree requirements. Each year, EKU Honors will accept applications for extra semester funding from students who are in this situation. If a student is awarded an extra semester scholarship, the student will also receive the Books-on-Loan award for the extra semester(s) of scholarship. Utilizing a semester of scholarship in the summer All students receive eight semesters of tuition scholarship and the Books-on-Loan award. Some students may wish to use a semester of scholarship during the summer, rather than during a fall or spring semester. All students interested in doing this must contact the Scholarships Office and have this approved by both Scholarships and the Honors Office. Students using one of their eight semesters of scholarship during the summer will also be awarded one of their eight semesters of the Books-on-Loan award for that same summer.

Curriculum Tracks &

Requirements EKU Honors offers three curriculum tracks for students. Students must complete the course requirements in their curriculum track, as well as graduate with the required cumulative GPA, to graduate as an Honors Scholar (see “Requirements to Graduate as an Honors Scholar,” pg. 20). Students who begin EKU Honors in the fall of their first year at EKU may choose between two curriculum tracks – Honors Flex or Honors Core. Currently enrolled EKU students and transfer students will complete the Honors Current/Transfer curriculum. Each Honors student will be assigned an Honors advisor, who is available to assist students in choosing Honors courses that will fulfill their curriculum requirements. The Honors advisor is not able to provide students with advising regarding their major requirements or with their RAC number, and students are still required to meet with their major advisor each semester. Students are strongly encouraged to meet with their Honors advisor each semester as long as they still have remaining Honors courses to complete. It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that all of their curriculum requirements have been met in order to graduate as an Honors Scholar. More information on required Honors courses is given in the “Courses” section of this handbook, found on pp. 13-14.

Curriculum Tracks & Requirements Honors Flex: Incoming first-year students who are bringing six or more college credit hours (AP, IB, dual credit, etc.) to EKU will complete the Honors Flex curriculum. This curriculum requires 25 hours of Honors coursework and is designed to allow students to use their existing credit, in conjunction with Honors courses, to complete their EKU general education and university requirements.

Required courses for students on the Honors Flex curriculum are: HON 100 – Honors Seminar HON 102/103 – Honors Rhetoric HON 420 – Honors Thesis 9 hours of Honors interdisciplinary seminars

There are certain majors at EKU that require students to complete the Honors Flex track, even if they are not bringing in six or more college credit hours. Honors advisors will provide guidance for students who may fall into this category.

Honors Core: Incoming first-year students who are bringing in less than six college credit hours will complete the Honors Core curriculum. This curriculum requires 34 hours of Honors coursework and is designed to allow students to complete their EKU general education and university requirements in 37 hours, rather than the 43 hours typically required. Honors Core students complete Honors courses to fulfill all of their general education and university requirements, excluding the wellness requirement.

Required courses for students on the Honors Core curriculum are: HON 100 – Honors Seminar HON 102/103 – Honors Rhetoric HON 216 – SEEing Science in Appalachia HON 420 – Honors Thesis 12 hours of Honors interdisciplinary seminars, with at least one

of each of the following course numbers appearing as a cross-listed course: HON 304W, HON 307W, HON 308W, HON 310W, HON 312W, and HON 320W

Thesis Requirements

The Honors Thesis is the culminating work of a student’s time in EKU Honors and is a chance for students to complete a research project on a topic of their interest and to be mentored by a faculty member with interest in the same topic. Each student must complete an Honors Thesis to graduate as an Honors Scholar (see “Requirements to Graduate as an Honors Scholar,” pg. 20). The Topic: The Honors Thesis can take whatever form suits the subject (a research paper, a creative composition or piece of art, a performance or recital, etc.). The thesis topic is often in the area of a student’s major or minor, but it does not have to be. If students wish to use their thesis project as part of a capstone project within their major, they must consult with their major and/or department to see if that is an option. The Mentor: Students should carefully choose a thesis mentor who has a similar interest in the chosen thesis topic. The Honors Director is available to provide assistance to students as they choose a thesis mentor.

Thesis Requirements

Page 16: EKU Honors › sites › honors.eku.edu › files...EKU Honors accepts current EKU students each year. Current EKU students are eligible to apply to EKU Honors during the annual application

pg. 16

The Process: The Honors Thesis process typically spans three semesters. Initial preparation begins the semester before a student plans to take the HON 420 course. Students then complete three credit hours of HON 420 in the next semester while attending the actual thesis seminar course. In the third semester, students complete the remaining three credit hours of HON 420 while independently completing their thesis project and presenting their work at the biannual Honors Thesis Presentation event. Occasionally, students may choose to complete all six credit hours of HON 420 during one semester, attending the thesis seminar course and presenting their work at the Honors Thesis Presentation event during that semester. Students should consult with the Honors Director if they plan to do this. The Honors Thesis Handbook, along with the necessary forms required for the Honors Thesis process, are available online at http://honors.eku.edu/honors-thesis-information and contain a thorough explanation of the Honors Thesis process. Honors Thesis Advising Sessions occur each semester, and students should attend one of these sessions in the semester before they plan to enroll in HON 420.

Activities, Events, &

Conferences Conferences: Each year, EKU Honors travels to four conferences. Students who have a proposal accepted for presentation at these conferences travel to these events at minimal cost (typically only a few meals; major expenses – transportation, registration, hotel – are covered by the Honors). EKU Honors consistently brings one of the largest, if not the largest, student contingent to each of these conferences. Kentucky Honors Roundtable (KHR) – meets once each semester KHR is the state association of Honors Programs and Colleges.

Conferences are held once each semester and are hosted by each school on a rotation basis. The typical conference includes dinner and social activities on Friday evening, followed by a program of student presentations on Saturday.

Southern Regional Honors Council – meets once a year, typically in March or April This is the regional association of Honors Programs and

Colleges to which we belong. A regional conference is held each spring. Proposals for this conference are usually submitted in January preceding the conference. Recent conferences have been held in Savannah, GA; Greenville, SC; and Orlando, FL.

National Collegiate Honors Council – meets once a year, typically in October or November This is the national association of Honors Programs and

Colleges to which we belong. A national conference is held each fall. Proposals for this conference are usually submitted in February preceding the conference. Recent conferences have been held in New Orleans, LA; Denver, CO; and Chicago, IL.

Leadership Opportunities Honors students are typically leaders on campus, both inside and outside the classroom. While there are many, many opportunities for leadership at EKU, there are also specific ways in which students can provide leadership and service to EKU Honors.

Honors Student Activity Council (HSAC): The Honors Student Advisory Council (HSAC) is the student-elected, student-governed body in EKU Honors that organizes service events and activities for all Honors students. HSAC's mission is to foster a spirit of service throughout the Honors community.

HSAC consists of a President, Vice-President, Communications Coordinator, Finance Coordinator, and Service Coordinator. A current list of HSAC members is available at http://honors.eku.edu/HSAC. These positions are elected each spring by the Honors Program student body to serve during the next academic year. Nominations and elections will be announced via email to all Honors students.

Honors Ambassadors: Honors Ambassadors are an elite group of Honors students who serve as student representatives among the EKU student body, the community, and most importantly, prospective honors students. Through various EKU recruiting events, Ambassadors serve as an extension of EKU Honors as they speak with prospective students and their families about Honors while answering questions and distributing promotional items and brochures. Honors Ambassadors share their experiences in EKU Honors and give an insider’s perspective of life at EKU. Honors Ambassadors receive one hour of HON 390 course credit (Directed Topics in Honors).

Honors Ambassadors are selected through an application and interview process each spring. For more information about Honors Ambassadors, including upcoming deadlines for application, please visit http://honors.eku.edu/HonorsAmbassadors.
