Message from your Potentate“Getting back

to the basics of having fun with a purpose to secure

the future”

El Karubah Shriners rolled out the red carpet to host nearly

100 children with special needs for the first annual “Memories in the Moonlight Dance” held on Saturday, February 13, 2016. Shri-ners Hospital patients, along with other children with special needs, such as Autism, Downs Syn-drome, and others were invited to attend this free event hosted by El Karubah Shriners. The dance was organized and funded by El Karubah Shriners working in partnership with Tia’s Hope, a non-profit organization devoted to creating “Memory Moments” that include joyful experiences, gifts and support for children and their families who are fight-ing serious illnesses and forced to spend time in the hospital. The event was also supported by Margaritaville Resort & Ca-sino in Bossier City, Louisiana, along with donations and

assistance from other area busi-nesses. Volunteers from Barksdale Airforce Base, the Shreveport Fire Department, Shriners Hospital staff, Masonic groups, Shriners, casino employees, and others, along with a large contingent of Cosplay actors, helped to create a fun filled night of music, food, dance, and games that those who attended will not soon forget.

Months of planning and prepa-ration paid off when children were first given an opportunity to choose from donated formal wear. Dresses, donated by indi-viduals, for the girls were then altered and fitted as needed by Margaritaville Casino’s seamstress.

Potentate Message (Continued from page 1)

Tuxedos for the boys were pro-vided by Squires Tuxedo Rentals in Bossier City, Louisiana. At-tendees were also treated to a hair and makeup session at the Shriners Hospital thanks to sev-eral volunteers who came out to assist. Upon arrival at the dance, children were giving an oppor-tunity to ride in and arrive at the

red carpet entrance by limou-sine. Attendees were greeted by a reception line and escorted in by uniformed Barksdale Airforce Base service members and then greeted by a wide verity of cos-tumed actors. Once inside the dance, attendees could have their photos taken with their favorite character or with any of the many fun props and backgrounds avail-able at any of the three photo stations. Throughout the night many attendees enjoyed making crafts at one of the craft tables staffed by volunteers to assist. The event featured a live DJ who kept the dance floor hopping and crowded throughout the night. One look at the dance floor and it was obvious by the smiles on all of the children’s faces that this was a special night for a lot of people and one they will remem-ber for a long time. In fact, one grandparent of a Shriners patient

stated that this was the first time her 12-year-old granddaughter had ever danced. This little girl was seen dancing all night long and I suspect this will not be the last time she dances.

As a proud Shriner, it was such a wonderful night and one that I will remember for a long time. It was truly a great example of what Shriners mean we say that we are having fun and helping children. The event was such a huge suc-cess that plans are already in the works for next year’s 2nd an-nual Memories in the Moonlight Dance. I want to thank everyone who came out or helped support this event.

Onions are com-

ing!! A lot of people have pre-ordered the Vidalia Onions which should arrive at the

Temple approximately the first week of May. If you would like to have some onions, we ask that you let us know so we can make sure we can get them for you. Just call the Temple office, 318-631-1594 to be placed on the list. They are $10 for a 10 pound bag. You do not have to pay until you pick up your onions.

South Central Shrine Association is coming to Shreveport and El Karubah!!! See the registra-tion form and itinerary for events to be held. SCSA was origi-nally scheduled to be held in Hot Springs Arkansas, but the hotel deal fell through. We are fortu-nate to be able to assist with this event. We need attendance!! This is a great opportunity to meet other Nobles and their families from the area that the South Central Shrine Association covers. Many Nobles believe that if they are not in a competitive unit, they will not have anything to do. This is far from the truth. Just the hospitality rooms, meals, and having a good time is a big part of Shrine Association gather-ings. If you have never attended a Shrine Association gathering,

please make this your first! If you would like any further informa-tion on this event, please call me, 318-631-1595.

The recent floods affected several of our members. Our thoughts and prayers go out to these families and we hope all is getting back to normal for you. The Tem-ple had very high water, as Cross Lake rose to record levels. Our piers and retaining wall suffered some damage. All of this can be repaired and we had several nobles working on it on the Eas-ter cleanup day. Thanks to all who showed up to work that Saturday. The Temple grounds were a mess from all the debris that washed up during the flood. Thanks to the hard work of everyone, the

grounds look great.

We still have plenty of room for the commemo-rative bricks in front of the Silent Messenger statue. If you would

like to have a brick placed in this area, please contact the Temple for details. This is a great way to pay tribute to someone, yourself, your unit, or anything else you can think of. The bricks are only $60 apiece. Call the Temple for details on how to order your brick.

From the Recorder’s Desk

The Temple is still getting a lot of calls about dues cards. Shriners International has taken over the processing of dues cards, and with almost 300,000 to process, they are behind. We have been assured that the dues cards are coming. If you have paid your dues and have not received a dues card, please be patient, it will be forthcoming. If you need a temporary dues card for some reason, you can contact John at the Temple and he will help you out.

On May 3rd, you have a chance to donate to the Shriners Hospital

for Children in Shreveport during an online fund raising campaign. This is a community challenge involving all the nonprofit groups in our area. You may donate on line at any time on May 3rd. The Community Foundation of North Louisiana hosts this event and will also give extra funding depend-ing on how much is raised. This is a great way for you to help our hospital. Anyone can donate, so please share this information with your friends and families.

What a fast pace we are on this year. Many Nobles, Past

Potentates and Ladies have stated in the past that the time will fly by and it sure has. Between traveling within the South Central Region and El Karubah events, time seems to vanish. Past events since our last edition: took a trip to Lake Charles to attend Habibi Temple and socialize and repre-sent El Karubah at their Poten-tate’s Ball, a number of parades have been accomplished, IHOP Day is done and considering the weather a major success due to Nobles stepping up and helping our Oriental Guide, Melvin Fletch-er, in that endeavor. That was followed by a superb Potentate’s Ball to honor Illustrious Sir Jerry DeFatta, his Lady Jan, his wonder-ful family and all the Nobles of El Karubah. Great Job Illustrious Sir, truly a great event. Most recently our annual Easter Egg Hunt, organized by our High Priest and Prophet Don Emmons and his Lady Elaine, was also a major success. However; the present becomes the past on which to re-flect and enjoy the memories and then press on to the future.

I am looking forward to the upcoming Steak Night in April as well as the Golf Tournament in May that Assistant Rabban Brian Moore is organizing. The time will then quickly pass and we will

be at Circus time again, which is my event to organize and for sure ask and beg for help and input from anyone and everyone to make it a success as well. Here is what has transpired to date: a contract has been signed with our telemarketing firm, Century Link has been contacted confirming the dates and holding the build-ing, Carden International has held multiple communications with me and we are looking at solidifying a contract, thus the easy part will be complete. Then the hard part starts. Getting Circus ads sold, getting Shrine and Master Ma-son Tickets stuffed and mailed, advertising the event, and pro-curing the help needed to make the event work. I have no doubt, (but will have a number of ulcers), that the event will be a success because of the Nobles and Ladies of El Karubah.

Please let me again end this mes-sage by saying if you have an idea or an event that you would like to see at El Karubah, talk or write to one of the Divan members and we can explore getting it done. It is our Temple and together we can keep it strong. Without input and new ideas, even the strongest of organizations fall. Let’s keep everyone happy and involved.

Fraternally Mike Blair, Chief Rabban

Message From Chief Rabban El Karubah Ladies Kick Off the EOS System Fundraiser!

Help the El Karubah Ladies send their love to the res-

cue by wrapping your protective wings around the heart of a child. To show your support purchase one of the beautiful lapel pins being sold to raise money for the purchase a new 3D EOS Imag-ing system for the Shreveport Shriner’s Hospital. Dr. John Fox, Chief of Staff for the Shreveport Shriners Hospital recently made a presentation on the new EOS imaging system and asked for El Karubah’s assistance in getting the new system funded for the Shreveport Hospital. Our ladies heard his request and have risen to the challenge. This new im-aging system represents a true breakthrough, offering the most advanced low-dose X-ray technol-ogy for orthopedic imaging.

Research shows the EOS system leads to accurate, precise diag-noses and informed treatment of orthopedic conditions. It may be

particularly appropriate for use with children and adolescents due to the reduced radiation exposure, compared with conven-tional methods.

The EOS system provides high-quality radiographic images of the patient skeleton. It also delivers a radiation dose up to nine times less than a traditional X-ray, and up to 20 times less than a CT scan. This low dose makes the system of particular value for pediatric patients, especially children who need to be imaged frequently to monitor disease progression, such as those with scoliosis. Patients with scoliosis typically undergo imaging every three to six months during a period of several years, which can amount to more than 20 total scans over the course of treatment.

The EOS system is also the only three-dimensional, full-body tech-nology capable of scanning pa-tients in a weight-bearing

standing or sitting position to capture natural posture and joint orientation. Research has dem-onstrated an intricate relationship between regions of the musculo-skeletal system, particularly be-tween the spine and lower body.

Three-dimensional bony images of the skeleton enable physicians to make a more informed diag-nosis and treatment decisions. Before EOS, clinicians often had to “stitch” together multiple smaller two-dimensional images to approximate a full picture of the target anatomy. This process was particularly problematic for complex orthopedic conditions, such as spinal disorders.

All of the proceeds from the sale of the silver angel wings and heart lapel pins will go towards the purchase of the EOS system, and will be donated to the Shreveport hospital as a directed gift. If you would like to send your love to the rescue

by purchasing one of the beau-tiful lapel pins, for only $10.00, please contact Jan DeFatta at 318-272-5249 or by e-mailing her at [email protected]. Pins will be available at any El Karubah function or meeting while supplies last.

I would like to thank all the Nobles and Ladies for their

help with the Easter clean up and Easter basket stuffing. The cleanup, with the help of all the units and four tractors, went very well. We must have hauled 4 tons of pine straw. The tractors made this a lot easier. The ladies had all the tables decorated and baskets arranged for Easter.

On Easter Sunday, with the help of the Ladies and Nobles, we put out the Easter Eggs. At 1 pm. I was wondering if we had room for all the children that came out

to the Easter Egg hunt. All the corn dogs and popcorn were eaten. Everyone had a good time and went home with a basket and a toy. I would like to thank Hand and the kitchen staff for all the fine food on Saturday and Sun-day. I would also like to thank Southern Rentals for the use of the air slide. The children enjoyed playing on it immensely.

Again I would like to say THANK YOU all for your help.

El Karubah Shriners

We’ve had a blast at the Temple so far this year. Your

Provost Guard officers have been present at all temple events. We tiled the Temple in January at the Closed meeting, ran the registra-tion tables at the meetings, and provided Security and manned the entrance gate at the Memo-ries in the Moonlight Ball held in February. At the Moonlight Ball, we met the children at the en-

trance gate, helped them get out of their cars, and helped them into limousines’ which took them to the Ball entrance.

At the March IHOP National Pancake Day, the entire Provost Guard unit worked the various stores in the rain, opening and welcoming the patrons as the entered and left the facility. We

even walked them from their cars to the store with umbrella to keep them from getting soaked from the intense rain.

At the Potentate’s Ball, we also manned the Registration Booth table and assisted the patrons with information and where to go to at different times.

Not only did we work, but we had a great time greeting, and having fun ourselves.

We look forward to the upcom-ing year supporting the Temple, and participating in the numer-ous events and activities that are planned throughout.

If you are in a Unit or not, and are interested in becoming a member of the Provost Guard Unit, please do not hesitate to give us a call or send an e-mail. We have ap-plications at the office. We invite all Nobles to be a part of us and share in the fun and excitement of the Provost Guard.

From the Colonel Nobles,I would like to congratulate

everyone for the fine job you’ve done by presenting the Shriners to our communities over the last few months. You’ve put us very much in the spotlight and public eye in a very favorable manor and it’s much appreciated.

I’m so proud to help represent and I’m also proud every time I hear, “Look, it’s the Shriners!!!”

Mardi Gras was a very busy time for us and it won’t let up much going forward as we’ve had additional requests for support-ing other communities and events. “Business is good” Any Nobles wishing to participate in the upcoming parades should contact myself or one of the Unit leaders and you will most certainly be welcomed to parade with us whether it be for one event or on a regular basis.

Wow! This year is moving for-ward fast! The temple is off to a great start along with success-ful events that have drawn great attendance and participation. The Potentates Ball was a blast and the Children’s special needs dance was very rewarding. The Children’s dance is one event that

I hope El Karubah will continue to sponsor. Recently I attended an Assistant Rabban leadership conference in Tampa. This con-ference was informative and will help me with my future Divan duties. There were several other Assistant Rabban’s from many of 197 Shrine Temples also in at-

tendance. Our conference lasted three days and covered Shrine law, membership, fund raising, Shriners protocol, and Temple risk management.

Next month, May 7th at 1:00 pm El Karubah will hold its annual Golf Tournament at Crooked Hol-

low in Greenwood. We will have a traditional four man scramble along with an assortment of bever-ages. Members, along with the public, are in-vited to participate. This year we will have a silent auction and two raffle drawings the day of the tournament. One raffle will be for a Springfield XDS 45 calibur concealed hand gun and the other raffle is for a 50/50 cash drawing. Raffle tickets are $20 each for both raffles. The temple office, Lynn Arnold, or I have tickets available for sale. Crooked Hollow ham-burgers will be served at the end of the tourna-ment. We still need hole-sponsors for the tourna-ment. Cost is $250 per hole and the person or company name will be displayed at one of the tee boxes on the course. Anyone needing addition information should con-tact the temple or myself 318-458-5364.

Fraternally yours,Bryan P. Moore, Assistant

Rabban

2016 Potentate Ball: It was a grand event.

Join Us for Lunch Tuesday, May 10, 2016

In an effort to provide something for all of our

members, I have decided to have a casual lunch get together. I have heard from some of our members that they are not always able to attend our monthly meetings because of conflicts or not being able to drive at night. Therefore, I am scheduling a lunch time gathering open to anyone who wishes to attend. The first of such lunch meetings will be held Tuesday, May 10, 2016. Lunch will be served to order and for the first event we will have hamburgers and chips with a drink for a cost $5.00. If you would like to join us for lunch and fellowship please give us a call a day or so in advance so we can make sure we order enough food. There will not be any official meeting agenda and the group can just enjoy the company of those they may not have seen in a while or just catch up with friends over a casual lunch. This event is open to anyone who would like to attend so bring a friend or a

member you have not seen in a while at one of our meet-ings. You can also bring a prospective member who you think will enjoy learning more about El Karubah.
