Orlando, FL - Building on a trend of standalone emergency rooms, Osceola Regional Medical Center held a ribbon-cutting event for the Hunter’s Creek ER in south Orlando last Thursday, May 22. Slated to open in June, the facility, located at 12100 S. John Young Parkway, is HCA’s second free standing ER in Central Florida – following the Oviedo ER, which opened in 2013. It is expected to serve more than 300,000 residents annually in the surrounding south Orlando and north Osceola areas. The $10 million emergency

department features 11 private patient beds and a diagnostic laboratory, as well as imaging services that include CT scan, ultrasound and digital X-ray. The one-story building spans 10,600 square feet and includes an ambulance entrance.

The Hunter’s Creek ER will maintain a staff of approximately 40 healthcare professionals including emergency physicians.

trustees approved a modest tuition increase of $4 per credit hour for next fall, bringing the total cost per credit hour for Florida residents to $103.06. The increase amounts to $32 more a semester for the average student. Total tuition and fees for a full-time student will be less than $2,500 per year. Even with the increase, Valencia’s tuition remains lower than every state college and university in Central Florida and the fourth least expensive in the state.“Holding tuition level for a fourth year

would significantly compromise the financial health of the college and the quality of the programs offered,” said Valencia President Sandy Shugart in offering his rationale for the increase. While trustees were reluctant to

approve an increase, they saw it as a necessary step to alleviate the lack of state funding for the Florida College System as a whole, and for Valencia in particular. While Gov. Rick Scott’s budget would have provided an additional $80 million in funding for

Florida’s state colleges, the Legislature authorized only $31 million for the 28 state colleges. Of that, Valencia received a net increase of 1.4 percent, where some colleges saw increases as large as 17 percent. “We would have preferred to avoid

a cost increase to the students,” said Board Chair Maria Grulich. “If the governor’s budget had passed, we would not be in this position.”Bachelor’s level tuition will stay the

Osceola County, FL - After nine years and nearly 300,000 miles on the road, Station 65 has a new engine on duty in Poinciana.

“I’m honored to be part of the first ceremony of this type for

our department. These traditions are important for firefighters and the community they protect,” Commissioner Brandon Arrington, whose district will be served by the new engine. “It’s a great day anytime you can improve public safety for residents.”

Firefighters and guests retired the old engine Monday and brought the new one into service through the traditions of the fire service that predate motorized equipment.

The 2014 Pierce Impel Pumper was wet down by the old engine, and then it was dried off by fire officials and guests with commemorative towels. Once dry, it was pushed into the station.

The tradition dates to the days of hand- and horse-drawn fire equipment. Since horses could not easily push the equipment back into the station after fire calls, firefighters pushed the equipment back into the fire house. The hosing down and drying off practice recalls a couple of traditions, depending on who is telling the tale.In one, it harkens to the time when a

new fire horse would be given a bath “to welcome the new” and “retire the old.”Others say the ceremony dates back

to the era of hub and spoke wooden wheels. The wheels were always washed down after it returned from a fire, to keep them from drying and cracking from the exposure to the heat and soot.

Osceola County prepares for Hurricane SeasonOsceola County, FL - As part

of a state-wide hurricane readiness exercise, Osceola County employees tested their ability to respond to a major storm event over two days this week, officials said.The table top exercise coordinated a

county-wide response to widespread flooding created by heavy rainfall from “Hurricane Jones.” An independent, outside agency developed the exercise and evaluated the county’s response.An important aspect of the exercise

was building communication and brainstorming solutions pose by the storm, officials said.

“Like any good team, you have to practice and prepare for the worse case scenarios,” said Osceola Commission Chairman Fred Hawkins, Jr. “Readiness is the main focus of our storm plan and our citizens should also have a plan and be prepared to implement it as needed during the coming hurricane season.”

Kissimmee, FL - On May 23th, the City of Kissimmee announced the opening of the first public access boundless playground in Osceola County. and create opportunities. In the 22nd minute of the game it would be Austin da Luz to improve Orlando’s lead. With the second goal of the game, da Luz sent a rejected cross to the back of the net. Orlando wasn’t finished. Just four minutes later, Luke Boden made his way down the left side easily and sent a perfect cross. Adama Mbengue was there to send a powerful strike to the back of the net. Molino made it four in the 41st minute after maneuvering threw Tampa defense to score his tenth goal of the season. Tampa was able to get one on the score board right before the half time whistle. 2014, aproximadamente a las 9:15 p.m., la víctima oyó que tocaban a su puerta y a un hombre llamándolo por su nombre. Cuando la víctima miró hacia fuera, vio a un hombre hispano desconocido vestido con un traje negro que llevaba un auricular de radio que era similar al tipo usado por los agentes del orden. Cuando la víctima abrió la puerta, el sospechoso, identificado más tarde como Abdiel Méndez, de 32 años de edad, se identificó como un oficial de policía. Cuando la víctima pidió ver sus credenciales, Méndez le mostró una insignia dorada que llevaba dentro de una billetera plegable.La víctima, creyendo que Méndez era

un oficial, lo dejó entrar al apartamento. Al ver que Méndez estaba actuando sospechosamente, la víctima le volvió a pedir ver sus credenciales. Es entonces

cuando Mendez le muestra un arma de fuego. La víctima le dijo a Mendez que estaba llamando a la policía. Mientras la víctima estaba llamando a la policía Méndez huyó de la zona.Agentes de la Policía de Kissimmee

encontraron a Mendez cuando huía del complejo Plaza Chelsea. La víctima identificó positivamente Méndez como la persona que se identificó como un oficial de policía.Méndez cooperó con los oficiales y

declaró que él fue a la residencia de la víctima para recoger el dinero del alquiler que se le debe al padre de Méndez. Man arrested for impersonating a police officerKissimmee, FL - On May 21, 2014,

at approximately 9:15 p.m., the victim heard a knock on her door and a male calling her name. When the victim looked outside she saw an unknown Hispanic male dressed in a black suit wearing a radio ear piece that was similar to the type worn by law enforcement officers. When the victim opened the door, the suspect, later identified as 32-year-old Abdiel Mendez, identified himself as a police officer. When the victim asked to see credentials, Mendez displayed a gold badge that was inside of a folding wallet. The victim, believing Mendez was an

officer, invited him into the apartment. When Mendez was acting suspiciously,

the victim again asked to see his credentials. That is when Mendez displayed a handgun. The victim told Mendez she was calling the police. While the victim was calling the police Mendez fled the area. Kissimmee police officers encountered

Mendez as he was fleeing the Chelsea Square complex. The victim positively identified Mendez and the person who identified himself as a police officer. Mendez cooperated with the officers

and stated he went to the victim’s residence to collect rent money that is owed to Mendez’s father. Officers recovered the handgun and a gold badge in a wallet from Mendez. The

badge had “Concealed Weapon” on the top and “Permit” on the bottom. Officers also recovered a two way radio with an ear piece. Abdiel Mendez was arrested and

charged with Falsely Impersonating an Officer. Mendez was also found to be carrying a concealed firearm while falsely stating that he was a police officer, which is a felony. Mendez was also charged with Possession of a Concealed Weapon in the Commission of a Felony.
