FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK:
MARCH EVENTS
M A R C H 1 6 - 2 0 , 2 0 1 5
ANNOUNCEMENTS
March is a busy month at Edison. In addition to the daily teaching and learning taking place in our classrooms, we are continuing professional development work around writing to Common Core Standards, implementing some writing units from Teacher’s College, and visiting teachers using writers workshop at Roosevelt Elementary School. We’re also continuing to work on Cognitively Guided Instruction in math and helping students learn to navigate performance tasks (real world, multi-part math problems). We’ve just began a second round of academic intervention programs before and after school in grades K, 2, 3, 4 and 5. Thanks to Elizabeth Ipiña, Stefani Tovar, Vincent Alvarez, Emma Casillas, Virginia Johanna Brown, Alexandra Brandoli, and Geralyn Goodman for their work with these classes and to Aileen Salmaggi for shepherding and overseeing assessment in the afterschool classes.
We have several 5th
grade projects coming to culmination this month – Young Storytellers, Mathletes, and the Fifth Grade Play. Young Storytellers The Big Show! will be held Wednesday, March 11 at 6:00 pm. Ten 5
th graders (applicants chosen by lottery) have been working 1:1 with
professional writers to produce original short screenplays that will be brought to life by working actors on the Edison stage. All are welcome at this wonderful event. 5
th Grade Teacher Constanza Murcia has been coaching more
than 20 volunteer 5th
graders who love math to participate in the Culver City USD Math Competition. All these “mathletes” have been training for a math competition on March 14 and six were chosen by lottery to represent Edison at the competition. ¡Buena Suerte!
Edison 5th
graders are also working with our PS Arts Theater Teacher Martha Ramirez Oropeza to put final touches on their annual theatrical production. This year on March 26 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. they are performing Cambia Todo Cambia a bilingual play looking at theater through the ages. The play includes music and dance as well as drama and is an amazing production. Our theater program is supported by SMMEF’s Vision for Student Success. Please join us!
Finally, our annual observance of the life and work of César Chávez to be held on Friday night, March 20 at 6:00 p.m. will showcase our 2
nd graders. They will be performing songs they have written in honor
of Chávez during a six-week Songwriting Residency with music teacher Jacqueline Fuentes (Thank you VSS and SMMEF!) We also hope to have a report on Edison’s recent trip to Corazon de Vida in Ensenada. So many wonderful events this month – please come when you can! 3-4-5 are preparing for the SBAC Teachers are continuing their visits to observe Writers Workshop instruction at Roosevelt Elementary School
Jogathon – Thanks to all those parents who organized and executed Edison’s annual Jogathon. This is one of our favorite activities of the year – fun, healthy, and raises a lot of money to support programs at our school! The students enjoy the fun of a day in the park – jogging, hopping, skipping, walking, crawling and moving any way they can to the beat of some fun tunes. It’s an event that’s impossible not to enjoy! Now its time to collect those Jogathon pledges and turn them in for eligibility for prizes!
If You Change Your Phone Number or Address you must notify the front office so we can update your child’s emergency cards and records in Illuminate. Proof of a new address is required – a change of address from the DMV and a utility bill from your new address within the last 30 days. Facilities Updates: Installation of air conditioning and forced-air heading units for the classrooms has commenced, with the aim of installation by mid-April. Work also continues on schedule on the construction site, with underground plumbing, pumps and cisterns now installed. The footings for the staircases from the second storey have been dug and foundations are being poured. You can see the schedule on the windows near cafecito, on the office bulletin board, or by visiting http://fipcontractors.smmusd.org/edison-new-construction.aspx Weekly site Facilities Committee meetings continue on Wednesday mornings at 7:45 am in the Community Room.

ANUNCIOS

cognitivo, social y emocional saludable.
Metas del grupo…
Fortalecer las habilidades de padre/madre
Nuevas maneras a pensar del
comportamiento de sus niños/niñas
Estrategias efectivas para manejar
