El Carnaval en Puerto Escondido: disfrazarse, alocarse, ser feliz y bailar por las calles. Después de todo, ¡el Carnaval es una vez al año y todo se vale! Carnaval de la Costa 2013 emp-ieza el 8 de febrero con el concierto del guitarrista famoso mexicano Paco Rentería en la Agencia Municipal. El Carnaval sigue hasta el 10 de febrero.

La palabra Carnaval viene del Latín “despedida de la carne”, y hace referencia a los cuarenta días de la Cuaresma, período durante el cual el consumo de carne está prohibido para los cristianos y deben vestir sobriamente y abstenerse de celebra-ciones y regocijo.

Así es que los días previos a la Cu-aresma eran la última oportunidad para disfrutar de los placeres de la carne y el Carnaval se convirtió en un periodo de excesos tolerados, abandono despreocupado y conde-scendencia durante el cual el com-portamiento alocado era aceptado como un desfogue natural.

En Puerto Escondido se celebra el Carnaval con desfiles y un programa cultural en la explanada de la Agencia Municipal donde se coronan los reyes de Carnaval y se quema el mal humor.

Carnaval de la Costa 2013 will take place Febru-ary 8-10 and one of the highlights this year is a free concert by famed Mexican guitarist Paco Rentería at the Agencia Municipal, 9 pm on February 8.

Carnival, or Carnaval, as it is called in Latin America, comes from the Latin meaning “farewell to the flesh.” It refers to the 40 days of Lent, when Christians were forbidden to eat meat, had to wear somber clothing and refrain from merriment.

So the days preceding Lent were the last opportunity to enjoy the pleasures of the flesh and Carnaval evolved as a period of sanctioned excess, of carefree abandon and indulgence in which wild behavior was accepted as a necessary outlet.

In Puerto Escondido Carnaval is celebrated with parades and a cul-tural program at the Agencia Mu-nicipal, where the king and queen of Carnaval are crowned and the ritual burning of ill humor takes place.

Feria de Chila 1-23 febrero / Chila Fair: Feb. 1-23February is a big month for the

town of Chila for that’s when it celebrates its patron saint, San Isidro Labrador.

The Chila Fair begins February 1 and wind up three weeks later on February 23, and include a variety of religious, sport and cultural events. Among them are tournaments of the ancient ball game pelota mixteca, a fireworks display including a castillo, a dance, rodeo and horse racing.

Events will take place at the excellent facilities that Chila has to offer, which include a sports complex with soccer stadium, a pelota mixteca ballcourt, and cock-fighting ring, as well as the square of the Agencia Municipal and the church.

Here is the full schedule of events.

Febrero es un mes importante para los Bajos de Chila porque es el mes cuando se celebra su santo patrón, San Isidro Labrador.

La Feria de Chila empieza el 1 de febrero y termina tres semanas después el 23, y se incluye una variedad de eventos religiosos, deportivos y culturales. Entre el-los son torneos de pelota mixteca, futbol, fuegos pirtotécnicos y cas-tillo, un baile, jaripeo y carreras de caballos.

Puerto Music Fest, one of the main events on the Puerto calendar, continues until March 2 with live music concerts under the stars and the palms on the beach at Playa Marinero. Enjoy the music, dance on the sand and watch the surf roll in.

Shows are February 2 with Neil Chapman, Paul Reddick and Chris Caddell; February 14 and 16 with Los Demás Apellidos and surprise guests; and February 28 and March 2 with Nicotyna and friends and special guests.

Music begins at 7 pm and runs till 11 each night. Venue is the Split Coconut Restaurant-Bar on Playa Marinero. Admission is $90.

In addition to providing residents and visitors with a great deal of good music and fun, the festival supports several local charities through ticket and merchandise sales.

Puerto Music Fest sigue hasta el 2 de marzo con conciertos de música en vivo bajo las estrellas y las palmeras en Playa Marinero. Disfruta la música, baila en la arena y mira las olas bonitas que vienen a la playa.
