The sheriff’s dispatch re- ceived a call at 12:17 p.m. on Monday for a report of a stolen identity. The reporting party lives in the 1600 block of Woodworth Road near Sunnyside. Also since yesterday in the Lower Valley, deputies have dealt with two threats, two traffic violations and one in- formational call. Hit and run, vandalism in G’view GRANDVIEW – In activity since yesterday, Monday, the Grandview police were alerted to a hit and run accident in the 1900 block of West King Street. A resident in the area said someone ran into his car parked in front of his residence. Also yesterday, police learned a vehicle was vandalized in the 500 block of Hedrick Place. Residents in that area also reported someone attempted to steal bicycles. Officers were also alerted to a vehicle recovered from a ca- nal near the Benton County line. In other activity yesterday, Grandview police fielded two noise complaints. Sunnyside police were able to apprehend a suspect after a man reported a burglary in the 100 block of Olive Avenue last night (Monday) at approximately 8:45 p.m. The caller told police he noticed someone in the base- ment of his mother-in-law’s home, but the homeowner was unaware of the activity below the main floor. Burglary suspect taken into custody School board OK’s new hires At last Thursday night’s Sunnyside School Board meeting, the board of di- rectors approved the hiring of Yvonne Ramirez as the school district’s new nutrition services director. In addition, long time Sunnyside School District employee Wallace Shearer was approved for the open assistant principal position at the high school. Dropout program gains approval The Sunnyside School Board last week approved an agreement between the American Academy drop- out program and Sunnyside School District. The American Academy attempts to bring students who have dropped out of the school system back in by teaming them with a commu- nity mentor. The American Academy is an online program that will allow the Sunnyside School District to take responsibility for all students and keep them involved in school. The program, Superin- tendent Rick Cole revealed, will not have an impact on current revenues. The school board also gave approval for the Sunnyside School District to apply for the High School Graduation Initiative (HSGI) grant pro- gram. The Sunnyside School District will enter into a con- sortium with the Mabton School District and the Mt. Adams School District to ap- ply for the HSGI grant, which will help build support for students in the middle school that will carry them through- out high school. New administrator roles for board members Sunnyside School Board members did some rearrang- ing of administrator roles and approved the changes at the Thursday, July 29, school board meeting. Director Michelle Perry picked up Sierra Vista Middle School while Steve Carpenter switched athletics for ethics with Miguel Puente. These roles allow for a board member’s presence in each program and school in the school district. Migrant student data and recruitment contracts OK’d Rachel Carrera was ap- proved by the Sunnyside School Board as a migrant student data and recruitment consultant. Carrera will assist the migrant student data and recruitment staff on agendas and materials for the iden- tification and recruitment sessions for new staff. Centerpoint Language Services was also approved by the Sunnyside School Board to provide verbal and written translations to the Migrant Education Program. Dr. Roberto Dansie’s ser- vices were also approved by the school board. Dansie will facilitate the Migrant Education Program’s parent forum. SUNNYSIDE SCHOOL BOARD BRIEFS by Corey Russell Yakima Valley Dairy Ambassador Kristen Wedam the dairy facts she presented to area youth last Friday to re- ally sink in. So she had them make their own ice cream. “Now’s the time for them to start developing healthy lifestyles,” Wedam said. “I want them to remember why it’s important to have dairy products. If they do a project with the presentation they’ll remember.” Wedam presented her dairy presentation to a group of youths at the Sunnyside Community Center before they made their own ice cream. Her topic was milk and where it comes from. Wedam told the youths that in the Yakima Valley there are more cows than there are hu- Ice cream demo helps youngsters retain dairy facts mans. The dairy industry in Yakima County is the largest in any county in Washington state and helps provide a lot of jobs. Wedam then explained what a cow’s life is like on the dairy. She said the cows get housing, food and water, and lots of love. The housing can be a barn and some cows, Wedam said, even get mattresses to sleep on. Besides a healthy diet, most dairies, she said, have nutritionists that cater to ev- ery need the cows might have. The cows are milked two to three times each day to help keep them comfortable, Wedam said. Milking ma- chines are used to milk the cows and then the milk is transferred to a bulk tank. The milk is then tested to make sure there are no anti- biotics. The milk is tested again by the milk truck driver and even more tests are done on the milk once it arrives at the plant. The milk then goes through the pasteurization process and is then packaged for sale. Wedam recommended the lo- cal youngsters receive three servings of dairy every day. She said carbonated drinks can actually rob a person’s calcium from their bones so it is important to keep up on their daily recommended needs for dairy products. Once the presentation was over Wedam showed the youth how to make ice cream. Using rock salt and ice in a bag, Wedam showed them how to put a smaller bag with half & half, vanilla extract and sugar into the bag with rock salt and ice. They then had to shake the bag for three to five minutes. The ice and rock salt made the ice cream mixture very cold in a very short period of time. Corey Russell/Daily Sun News Carlos Rendon (L) and David Hinojosa, a case manager for Sunnyside’s Promise, dig into their home-made ice cream the two made as part of a pre- sentation by Yakima Valley Dairy Ambassador Kristen Wedam last Friday. SUNNYSIDE SCHOOL BOARD BRIEFS

    by Corey Russell

Yakima Valley Dairy Ambassador Kristen Wedam the dairy facts she presented to area youth last Friday to re-ally sink in. So she had them make their own ice cream.

Nows the time for them to start developing healthy lifestyles, Wedam said. I want them to remember why its important to have dairy products. If they do a project with the presentation theyll remember.

Wedam presented her dairy presentation to a group of youths at the Sunnyside Community Center before they made their own ice cream. Her topic was milk and where it comes from.

Wedam told the youths that in the Yakima Valley there are more cows than there are hu-

Ice cream demo helps youngsters retain dairy factsmans. The dairy industry in Yakima County is the largest in any county in Washington state and helps provide a lot of jobs.

Wedam then explained what a cows life is like on the dairy. She said the cows get housing, food and water, and lots of love.

The housing can be a barn and some cows, Wedam said, even get mattresses to sleep on. Besides a healthy diet, most dairies, she said, have nutritionists that cater to ev-ery need the cows might have.

The cows are milked two to three times each day to help keep them comfortable, Wedam said. Milking ma-chines are used to milk the cows and then the milk is transferred to a bulk tank.

The milk is then tested to

make sure there are no anti-biotics. The milk is tested again by the milk truck driver and even more tests are done on the milk once it arrives at the plant.

The milk then goes through the pasteurization process and is then packaged for sale. Wedam recommended the lo-cal youngsters receive three servings of dairy every day. She said carbonated drinks can actually rob a persons calcium from their bones so it is important to keep up on their daily recommended needs for dairy products.

Once the presentation was over Wedam showed the youth how to make ice cream. Using rock salt and ice in a bag, Wedam showed them how to put a smaller bag with half & half, vanilla extract and sugar into the bag

with rock salt and ice. They then had to shake the

bag for three to fi ve minutes. The ice and rock salt made the ice cream mixture very cold in a very short period of time.

Carlos Rendon (L) and David Hinojosa, a case

manager for Sunnysides Promise, dig into their

home-made ice cream the two made as part of a pre-sentation by Yakima Valley Dairy Ambassador Kristen

Wedam last Friday. Hino-josa described the taste in
