SPARKLING WINESBRAZIL- When this wine came across my counter I immediately thought that it would be a space on the list but is it actually good? Yes, it is. Somewhat of a rarity in modern Brazilian wines, this is a great value for the price. FRANCE- We are proud to represent small growers and producers throughout our entire list and French bubbles are no exception. All of our Champagne falls under the label of Rcoltant Manipulant or Growers Champagne. This signifies that the producer on the label owns their land and also takes charge of the entire wine making process from pruning to harvest to vinification to cellaring. As opposed to most large houses that purchase harvested grapes, or sometimes even finished juice, these small farmers put their full efforts into producing a unique and site-specific wine each and every vintage. Look for the letters RM (in very small letters) somewhere on the bottle, you will not be disappointed. While Champagne is synonymous with great French bubbles, many other regions produce sparkling wine in the exact same method. AUSTRIA- The home of Mozart, Wolfgang Puck, and an embarrassing wine scandal in 1985. Dubbed the antifreeze scandal, it was centered around the use of diethylene glycol, a compound more often found in antifreeze, to increase sweetness and body in the wines. The chemical was added in very small doses and was virtually impossible to detect even with chemical testing. One overly greedy winemaker decided it would be a good idea to try and deduct the cost of the chemical from his taxes. Once word got out, the Austrian wine market tanked. Some countries, including France, even banned Austrian wines altogether. This was a saving grace for a country whose wine production had become quite dependent on bulk low quality products. New regulations drastically improved the overall quality of wines, and a shift toward dry, site specific styles led to the rise of the indigenous Grner-Veltliner. Although grown in other countries like Italy and Hungary, it is in Eastern Austria where the grape achieves its greatest expressions. Riesling also plays a big role in the white wines of Austria, here the grape is always dry, and intensely mineral driven with softer pitted fruit notes. F.X. Pichler is one of the most renowned producers and is a strict observer of the Codex Wachau. His wines are highly prized among wine geekdom circles around the world (including here). FRANCE- The motherland for all things wine related. When people today speak of International Varieties, they simply mean French grapes that have been transplanted to other parts of the world (minus Riesling, Sangiovese, and a few select others). What makes France a bit confusing is that every region specializes in a different set of grapes. What you typically see on the label is the name of a place where these grapes were grown. Certain grapes do better in certain climates and on certain soil types (the micro climate of the vine is what we refer to as terroir). Over hundreds of years, the French have figured out what grows well where and have devised a complex system of laws to govern high quality wine production. Toward the bottom of the section you will find the wines of Maison Leroy. If you have ever been interested in what the big fuss about white Burgundy is all about, this is your opportunity. This is quintessential high quality Chardonnay from one of the most esteemed producers in the region. GERMANY- If I had a desert island wine it would most certainly come from Germany. Here, Riesling is king and is in my opinion, the most complex white grape out there. It communicates terroir like none other. It ranges from bone dry to dessert sweet, from light and airy to robust and hardy, driven by citrus, orchard, or tropical fruits, all within Germany. Riesling is a high acid grape, thus great with food. Try it with and spice driven dish or with seafood, or grains, or heck almost anything. High quality Riesling is labeled by ripeness, this doesnt mean sweetness. Kabinett wines are the lightest, followed by Spatlese, Auslese, BA, Eiswein, and TBA. Dry wines are labeled Troken. When looking at the name of the wine, the first word (usually ends in er) is the name of the village it was sourced from, the second word is the specific vineyard. GREECE- Disclaimer: Our Greek wine selections are NOT Retsina! No pine resin was used in the aging of these intensely minerally, crisp whites from the cradle of the western wine making. All of these wines are imported by Athenee Imports, a company started in 1974 to showcase small family owned wineries, and their take on traditional Greek wines. Today, Greece is home to more than 650 identified indigenous grape varietals, affordably priced and great with Chef Bens cuisine. Look for Assyrtiko to be analogous to Chablis on steroids and Moschofilero to be remisicent of high strung Viognier, perfect with raw fish and salads. Robola, not to be confused with the Italian Ribolla Gialla, is a rocky great alternative to Pinot Grigio. HUNGARY- The home of the legendary dessert wine TOKAJI (to-kah-y), Hungary spreads its wings to produce great dry whites as well. Back to TOKAJI, which has been produced here since the 12th century In its peak of popularity, the wine was so prized it was actually allocated to the monarchs of Europe. In fact, Katherine the Great, the Empress of Russia, had a garrison posted in Tokaji year-round to make sure her allocation made it to St. Petersburg safe and sound. Tokaji was the first delimited area for wine production having been classified in 1700. After being veiled by the Iron Curtain for most of the 20th century, modern high quality wine making is making a big resurgence. Look for this to be the new jewel in European wines. ITALY- Italian white wines are the in thing nowadays, personally we thought they were cool long before the trend. They do vary in style by region, but overall show great versatility with food. The wines of the north (PIEDMONT, LOMBARDY, TRENTINO, VENETO, FRIULI) are almost always dry, crisp, and light in body with little or no oak usage. In the center (TUSCANY, UMBRIA, others) you will find similar wines but with a riper fruit profile. Then there is the south and the islands (CAMPANIA, SICILY, SARDINIA). The soil here is mostly volcanic (think Etna and Vesuvius), which lends the wines to have a higher total acidity in the end (volcanic soil is lower in pH). SLOVENIA- Just on the other side of the border in Fruili lies one of the best regions for white wine in the world. The region is Gorika Brda, the Collio in Italian, and wines here have some of the highest mineral content of any we have run across. Edi Simi his son Saa are two of the leading producers in the country. SPAIN- Oh Espaa, how you have opened our eyes Spain is the source of some of the best white wines on our list. The northern reaches of the country (GALICIA, BASQUE COUNTRY) are home to food friendly, complex wines from many different varieties. The Cepas Vellas Albario by Do Ferreiro is made from vines that are up to 250 years old! The wine maker, Gerardo Mendez, is a true icon of the region that has been in charge of the family winery since 1973. USA- We focused our list on the Old World, but we do love the wines we make here at home. True to our spirit, we feel we have a selection of domestic whites that represents some of the best wine styles being made today. The CADARETTA sbs is made by a good personal friend that is one of the best young winemakers in Walla Walla, Brian Rudin, and represents everything we love about Washington. It is rich, ripe, but still very acidic and rocky! Its not Sancerre, not White Bordeaux, not Napa, not New Zealand but very much a distinctive wine that has its own unique character. Also, it is amazing with vinaigrette or a tangy sauce of any sort. The DERIVATIVE by Carlisle, is the first white wine released by that producer. FRANCE- Well, what can we say about the motherland of wine? Each region does specialize in their specific set of grapes, and the country does have a daunting amount of wine labeling laws. Most of the time you can tell which grapes are used by the appellation listed on the bottle. More obscure and hard to find wines are on their way, but our classics are just that, classic. With French wines, especially BORDEAUX, BURGUNDY, and the RHONE VALLEY, the wines are often austere in their youth and open up with time in bottle. The younger selections on our list may require a bit of decanting or simply leaving the bottle on the table to let oxygen do its work. If this is a special occasion, you are definitely in the right section, please take a look through our rare and older vintage selection towards the bottom of the list. The horizontal of HERMITAGE from Ferraton Pre et FILS is a particular favorite, alongside CHTEAU RAYAS who is the only producer of CHTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE to utilize 100% Grenache with each vintage. A note to remember is that as with most old world wine, the wines are more tart and earthy than the same grapes grown in the new world. ITALY- If France is the motherland, than Italy is either the dad or the very nice step-mom. Indeed, over 1000 native grapes grow throughout this country. As Italy was not officially unified until 1861, the wines of the north, center, and south are completely different from each other both in flavor and in style. In the north, the noble grape is NEBBIOLO. Known as the king of grapes and the grape of kings, this varietal is quite unique. It is both powerful and delicate, tannic yet surprisingly smooth, and it produces some of the most complex wines on the planet. Central Italy is home to the noble grape SANGIOVESE, the south is home to AGLIANICO, and the islands of Sicily and Sardinia have a whole slew of local varieties. LEBANON- A few minutes need to be spent on the creations of Serge Hochar. There is nothing in the world quite like these wines. They have characteristics that are seen as flaws in other wines (Brettanomyces, volatile acidity), but the flavors balance the earthy rustic edge perfectly. Serge was named Decanter Magazines inaugural Winemaker of the Year in 1984 and both him and his dad Gaston who founded the winery in 1939, were classically trained in Bordeaux. They have missed only two vintages in the BEKAA VALLEY since then (1968 and 1972 due to war), and their wines are best described as a cross between BORDEAUX (structure), SOUTHERN RHONE (ripeness), and TUSCANY (rustic, dusty, old world charm). One of the greatest wine experiences I have had yet to date was his 1959!
