ll about Melbourne

The team at Coles is very excited to be welcoming you to Melbourne… and did we mention it has been voted one of the most liveable cities in the world? To learn more about this vibrant, multi-cultural, cosmopolitan city we have listed some key resources to help you settle in.

HistorySettled by white Europeans in 1835, Melbourne was first a home for the indigenous population (known locally as Kooris) for as long as 50,000 years prior. A major gold rush attracted worldwide attention in 1848 and a boom ensued, which lasted nearly 40 years.

It also gave the city its magnificent public architecture, gracious parks and opulent mansions. Established as the commercial headquarters and seat of government, Melbourne was the birthplace of Australian federation.

Mount Dandenong RangesActivities: walking/hiking

Bushwalking trails criss-cross the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges region. Suitable for all levels of fitness and age groups, the best walking tracks can be found in local national and state parks such as Yarra Ranges National Park, the Kinglake National Park, Bunyip State Park, the Cathedral Ranges State Park and Warrandyte State Park. The Dandenong Ranges National Park has a particularly excellent (and popular!) walking track, known as the Kokoda Walk.

The Kokoda Walk is a very steep track walk consisting of 1,000 steps. Along the way are plaques depicting the lives of those who fought and died on the Kokoda Trail in Papua New Guinea in World War II. The physical effort required to complete the climb gives walkers a sense of the exhaustion experienced by the Australian soldiers following the trail during the Kokoda campaign in 1942.

Length: 5 kilometres Walk: 2 hours Track: Steep Start: Ferntree Gully Rangers Office Finish: One Tree Hill Picnic Ground

Along the way see tree ferns, and manna gum and blackwood towards the top of the hill. This walk is not recommended for those with medical conditions that restrict physical activity.

In terms of culinary delights, Melbourne is the capital of Australia! It is a melting pot of cuisines from all over the world thanks to its highly multicultural population and their love (or maybe even obsession!) of food. Here you have literally thousands of restaurants, cafes and coffee shops to choose from catering to all tastebuds, dietary requirements and even the fussiest of eaters.

In the city, you can enjoy afternoon tea in the genteel surroundings of a nineteenth-century hotel, watch and be watched in buzzing laneway cafés and bars, or handpick a bottle of Yarra

Valley chardonnay at the latest über-chic hangout.

Head out a little further and explore one of Melbourne’s specialist eating destinations – Richmond for cheap and cheerful Vietnamese dishes, Carlton for Italian classics, Fitzroy for tantalising Spanish tapas.
