MEMBERSHIP REPORT
December 2016 “Dredgers”
Membership Memo – Branch 112
Active: 87 Inactive: 11
BIG SIR’S COMMENTS
Branch 112 is going on a journey of discovery with this
month’s Ladies’ Day luncheon at the Red Hawk Casino.
Hope you’ve already made your plans to be there.
What’s in store for you is your choice of great menu items at the “Waterfall
Buffet”…your choice…you pick what you want as many times as you want (in true
buffet style).
The Branch luncheon will begin at approximately noon. You are asked to arrive no
later than 11:30 at the entrance to the buffet. You’ll be directed from there to the
room which has been reserved for the gathering.
If you’re not familiar with Red Hawk, here’s a brief set of directions to get you to
the casino and to the “Waterfall Buffet”. Take US-50 East to the Red Hawk exit
(exit 40) and follow the signs to the parking garage. Take the elevator to the casino;
go through the casino to the stairs which take you down to the buffet entrance.
There will be a Branch representative to give you the directions to the room
reserved for the luncheon. Remember to take your luncheon tickets…if you forget
them the casino staff may not allow you through to the room.
We will collect those tickets before the luncheon begins. The success of this
adventure depends as much on you as it does on the Branch committee that worked
so hard to set it up and make sure that a good time is had by all.
One quick note…Branch 112 cannot and will not be held accountable for your visits
to the slot machines or casino tables during this Ladies’ Day event. See you there.
By the way, hope you have a joyful Thanksgiving and see you next year.

LITTLE SIR’S COMMENTS
I feel confident that I am not the only one in our branch who is wondering, "Where
the hell did the year go?" No I'm not ready for Christmas! Thank God we're
celebrating Thanksgiving at my son's house this year. All I have to do is show up
and eat. Come to think of it, that's pretty much what the Dredgers will do to end this
year--show up at Red Hawk on December 2 and eat! To all the Sirs of Branch 112, I
wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving. Look forward to seeing many of you on
December 2.

ACTIVITY REPORT
This year I am planning on a RiverCats Night game. The BEC has approved a night
game in June. That would be Thursday June 8, 2017 at 7:05 pm. Cost is $19.00 per
ticket (same as last year).
I am reserving 20 tickets in Section 117, rows 29,28,27. The "Cats" will be playing
the Fresno "Grizzlies". The Grizzlies is the farm team of the Houston Astros! More
info to come.
SIR Mel Buzzard is sponsoring a Walking Club in Gold River. He
will keep computerized records of times and distance for each
walker. This is open to SIRs and spouses, so put on a good pair of
shoes and give Mel a call at (916) 635-6129 to get started. This is one
of the best ways to improve your health and walking with friends is
great motivation!
Branch 150 SIR Justus Peterson is looking for men
and spouses for his "Card Day." His group meets on
the third Monday of each month at IHOP restaurant at
Sunrise and Coloma at 10:00 am. Games include
Bridge, Pinochle, and Cribbage. Beginners are welcome...so if you want to learn in a
supportive environment, this is the place and the cost is free ! Call Justus at (916)
635-4118. Incidentally, Justus used to bowl with branch 112 back in the day when
Rancho had a bowling alley (small world !! ).
It has been suggested that our branch sponsor a shooting activity at the
Cordova Shooting Range on White Rock Road. If you are interested in
hand gun or rifle shooting give me a call. Men interested
would need to work out days and times. Cost at the range is $17.00 for
rifle or handgun. Call me at (916) 363-9112 or my
email [email protected] if interested.

Stay Positive
As you grow older you’ve got to stay positive. For example, the other day I
fell down the stairs… instead of getting upset I just thought, “ WOW,
that’s the fastest I’ve moved in years”
Jesus is watching you
Late one night, a burglar broke into a house he thought was empty. He
tiptoed through the living room but suddenly he froze in his tracks when he
heard a loud voice say: "Jesus is watching you!"
Silence returned to the house, so the burglar crept forward again. "Jesus is
watching you," the voice boomed again. The burglar stopped dead again.
He was frightened. Frantically, he looked all around. In a dark corner, he
spotted a bird cage and in the cage was a parrot. He asked the parrot:
"Was that you who said Jesus is watching me?" "Yes," said the parrot. The
burglar breathed a sigh of relief and asked the parrot: "What's your name?"
"Clarence," said the bird.
"That's a dumb name for a parrot," sneered the burglar. "What idiot named
you Clarence?" The parrot said, "The same idiot who named the Doberman
Jesus."
“SPELLACY SPOTLIGHT” In the “Spotlight”, I will do a brief interview with one of our members each month to be
published in our Newsletter. The purpose of this venture is to help us all to get to know each
other better. If you’d like to be in the “Spotlight”, please advise me. My first interview is with
Board Director Mel Buzzard, Sir #081.
Ed: Good morning, Mel. Can you tell us where you’re from?
Mel
Ed: I heard that you had some kind of connection to the great golfer, Sam Snead. What’s the
story?
Mel: My Dad was a good friend of Sam, and I had a chance to caddie for “Slammin’ Sammy” at
the famous Homestead Golf Course. Sam 3-putted one hole, and got so mad that he bent his
putter over his knee. On the next green, he bent it back and went on to shoot a 68! He and Ben
Hogan were the best golfers in the world at that time.
Ed: I know that you had a very distinguished USAF career. What were your favorite and least
favorite assignments?
Mel: Our family favorite was Norvenich Radar Site near Cologne, Germany, where we spent 4
years. My least favorite was Grand Forks, North Dakota- too cold!
Ed: I know that you are very involved in activities that support our veterans. Can you tell us
about that?
Mel: I am very driven to give back and help others in need. I taught JROTC in local high
schools, and was employed at the VA Hospital Hospital at Mather, where I worked with surgery
patients. I spend a lot of time at the VA with young vets who are experiencing PTSD symptoms,
and I was the Commander of VFW Post 10125 for 2015-2016. I am also active in the Knights of
Columbus at St. Mel’s Church.
Ed: You are the top recruiter in our Sirs Branch 112. What’s your secret?
Mel: Just ask him! Our “Big Sir” Hartley wanted us to reach a 100 Active Member total by the
end of the year, and I’m doing my best to reach that goal. I enjoy meeting people and I’m
enthusiastic about our Branch, so I put my “salesman” abilities to work, and the results are more
new members. I’m also starting up a “Walking Club” for the Branch.
Ed: Last question: If you could have a gift of a box seat for the 7th
game of a World Series or a
ticket to the final round of a Masters’ tourney in Augusta GA, which would you choose?
Mel: I would take the box seat, because at the Masters, you’re supposed to stay at one location
and not move around the course. I might add, playing golf is another passion of mine. I want to
get a hole in one!
Ed: Thanks, Mel, for a very interesting interview.
We had 61 members and Guests in
attendance at the November
Luncheon with 44 meals given out.
December Luncheon (Ladies
Day) will be at the Red Hawk
Casino.
(Please be there by 11:30 with
your ticket in hand)
