Candidate StatementI have always viewed ONA as the voice of nurses in Oregon. I became involved as a volunteer in 2001 when my hospital was experiencing a staffing and safety crisis equal to what hospitals throughout the state are experiencing currently. I was proud to be involved in the original Staffing Law and have been a strong advocate of safe staffing for many years. At the local level I have had the privilege of working with my peers to negotiate contracts, settle grievances and work with management (when possible) to solve issues and concerns in house. I believe that nurses need a strong advocate at all levels. ONA is a growing organization with many challenges as we move toward the future. I would be proud to have a part in shaping that future and believe that as the President of ONA I can not only be that advocate but can help shape programs that will carry our vision far into the future.

Candidate StatementWhen thinking about why I would like to be the Secretary on the Board of Directors it is simple I want to make a difference in nursing. But, also, I want the east side of the state nurses to be heard. Don’t get me wrong we all have the same issues in nursing, but at different levels. The east side of the state have critical access hospital which provides its own problems. We are seeing a nursing shortage due to many do not want to live in small rural areas and the baby boomers are retiring. Some may say the lack of cultural, but if you want a slow, laid back way of life then Eastern Oregon is for you. The ONA provides nurses a voice and I would like to be one of the voices for Eastern Oregon nurse.

I’m a Nurse seeking a position on the ONA Board.I have been a RN for 30 years, I understand the need for fiscal responsibility, and safe patient care. Hospitals expect nurses to take care of an expanding pool of injured or ill patients while only watching “Productivity, and Increased Profit margins.” jeopardizing patients morbidity and mortality. I worked a PACU, ICU, CCU and ER. I am currently a Charge Nurse in Endo. I worked closely with the advisory board of the ONA forming the foundation Safe Nurse Staffing Law was built on. I am passionate about safe staffing and a member of the Nurse Staff Advisory Board I have been on the ONA Health Policy Cabinet. While on this committee we have worked closely with state and local political members to protect our patients and families in Oregon. I am a member of RRMC. ONA negotiating team, and RRMC ONA Grievance Chair. I’ve been a valuable asset to the staffing committee when questions about the Staffing Law have risen. I would be honored to be considered for a position on ONA Board. A Nurse is what I am, not what I do.

I joined ONA at the beginning of the year, 2017. I have watched the organization since joining and feel I am ready to provide my services as a nursing educator. I started my nursing education as a CNA. Obtained my LPN, ADN, BSN, and finally earning my MSN in 2005. I have worked in the LTC, acute care, clinic, and hospice settings. The education bug bit me early in my working career. I began teaching the clinical component while in the acute care setting. I am now the Dean of Health Sciences which gives me a broad view of nursing education and other health care professions. I have participated on many subcommittees regarding nursing education both for the state of Oregon and nationally. I look forward in serving on this cabinet.

ONA is an essential advocate within the Oregon legislature, striving to protect and promote the health of Oregonians, support a strong nursing practice environment, and promote ethical decision-making. I have been peripherally involved with ONA health policy activities since joining as a student affiliate in 2010, and have seen firsthand the immense impact the organization has had in shaping health policy in our state. My advocacy efforts have included regularly attending Nurse Lobby Day, testifying in the legislature, writing letters to the editor, speaking at a federal legislator’s press conference, volunteering for a variety of campaigns, and most recently participating in a media commercial shoot for the Measure 101 campaign. These activities, along with the robust formal health policy education I have received as a doctoral Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner student, have only strengthened my desire to devote my energy towards promoting evidence-based health policy in our state. I have a strong work ethic, arrive prepared to meetings and actively participate. I would be thrilled to serve my profession as an ONA health policy cabinet member.

I was raised in rural Oregon and have lived here most of my life. I would like to bring forth a voice from this region to the state level. I was raised with many family members in various unions and have a very strong recognition of the role that unions play in the lives of workers. I am very interested in serving the nurses of Oregon at the next level and being able to bring the knowledge and experience I gain back to my local Constituent Association. Additionally, I think that the nurses in rural Oregon have a lot to offer and I hope to be their voice.

I feel strongly that currently with the direction the government is moving by targeting Unions we need strong leadership in all areas. It is vital that we keep the voice of the Oregon nurses strong and visual. I feel that it is important that all areas of the state are represented to help fill those needs. Living and working in eastern Oregon I feel that I have the ability to represent small rural hospitals allowing their voice and needs to be heard in ONA. At this time I feel that every nursing voice in the state needs to be heard and is vital in keeping our Union strong.

As ONA Board President I have had recent experience working with AFT leadership and have made many connections with those leaders at previous AFT conventions and other events. I believe it is important for me to attend the 2018 AFT Convention so as to provide a smooth transition for our newly elected ONA president and support that person in establishing themselves in the AFT leadership community. As a nurse represented by ONA for collective bargaining it is also an opportunity to remain involved at a national level in support of our union.

When I became a nurse the part of the profession that really struck me was advocacy. As I endeavored to advocate for my patients I realized that patients needed to be advocated for before they came to the hospital and that my fellow nurses also needed a voice. This conviction led to serve on committees in my hospital and then in the ONA organization. This work is important to me and I will work for the nurses of Oregon and the people of this state to the best of my ability.

Since serving ONA on the E&GW Cabinet for 3 years, I have become much more aware of issues affecting all nurses across the country. While AFT represents significantly more teachers than nurses, many issues affect both of our professions. I want to be able to say I did my part in helping protect our collective future, and help minimize the effects of assaults on so many of our core professional values.

I would like to be considered for the AFT delegate position and the alternate ANA delegate position. I have previously gone to the AFT and ANA conventions to represent ONA. I enjoy participating in the creation of resolutions and lobbying for nurse issues. I have a working knowledge of how the conventions work and would be an asset to the success of the nurse agenda.

I am ready to contribute energy and enthusiasm toward protecting our profession, and the future of nursing. I have been privileged to be a leader in my workplace and have seen positive changes, as well as worrisome trends. As a candidate for the Human Rights and Ethics Cabinet, I intend to work towards increasing our diversity, access to educational opportunities, protecting patients’ safety and rights to medical care. We have many unmet needs for housing, drug and alcohol treatment, primary care providers, and mental health providers. Attracting, empowering, and mentoring new nurses is essential. Nurses work hard, and I want to ensure that Oregon nurses have the professional respect and resources they need to meet today’s challenges.

In 2016 I received the ONA Internal Organizer award for my efforts and success as an active ONA member during the PMMC-ONA 2015 Contract campaign to build collective power and for nurses to win a fair contract. In 2015 I received PMMC’s highest nursing honor The Nancy Roberts Award for Nursing Excellence for my efforts and success as a staff nurse, mentor, educator, and injury prevention. I want nurses to build collective power. I am a firm believer in ONA, the power of collective action, and that direct care nurses will be at the forefront for better healthcare in this country. I will bring 12 years of diverse nursing experience and pragmatism to the table and represent not just ONA, but ONA RNs to the best of my ability as a delegate.

In order to properly represent the membership, an AFT delegate needs to be familiar with the issues that both individual nurses and the collective membership of ONA will be facing in the near future. As a charge nurse, steward, bargaining team member and member of the E&GW Cabinet I believe I have a good understanding of many of these issues and am capable of and willing to advocate for RN interests.

In my position as the Executive Director of ONA’s Labor program, I’m often called to represent ONA’s interest within AFT. Serving as a delegate will give me the opportunity to ensure our interests become part of AFT’s planning for the next two years. I look forward to the opportunity to serve as a delegate at the 2018 AFT Convention.

ONA is affiliated with the American Federation of Teachers. As one of the four large nurse labor unions affiliated with AFT, Oregon has a powerful leadership voice for AFT’s health care agenda. Our participation at the national convention is an important part of this partnership. As the new CEO of ONA it is important that I express this partnership in person.
