Election Special Edition
The last month was full of election campaigning furore which culminated this month with the final
selection and investiture ceremony of the student council.
On the final day of vote casting the school was abuzz with excitement. All the students exercised their
suffrage in a secluded corner of their class rooms and to give them the real feel, their index finger was
marked with a permanent marker, which they flaunted for the rest of the day.
All the students from grade II to X and the teachers were entitled to cast one vote each and the teachers'
votes were doubled while calculating the number of votes received by a candidate.
After toiling for hours, the teachers were able to count the total number of votes received by each
candidate and the next day, amid great hustle, the results were announced by the School Head.

Kaleidoscope-Ripples (Annual Day celebration of Pre-primary - grade III)
On the 3rd
of August the Global Edge family gathered at the Ravindralaya to 'unwind with the waves of
culture , excitement and entertainment'. This year the annual day celebration- Kaleidoscope was called
Ripples as the tiny tots geared to thrill everyone with dance, music and fun.
The program started on a traditional note with lighting of the lamp ceremony and Kuchipudi dance to
welcome the guests. It was followed by a resplendent pageant in costumes of different states of Mile
Sur' by the KIs. Thereafter the KIIs tickled everyone with a hilarious English skit, ' A perfect groom'.
After that the students from various grades set the stage on fire with a medley of dances: Fusion dace,
East meets West dance, Remix dance, Semi-Classical dance and Jugalbandi. The myriad props and
elaborate costumes of the performers left the audience spell bound.
Complementing the program, the school choir presented chorales in English, Telugu, Vietnamese and
Hindi languages apart from a Telugu and a Hindi play showcased by the Global Edgers.
The most amazing aspect of the show was its multi-linguistic nature which gave it a global appeal.
Thereafter the school head, Ms. Ranjita Rao, presented the annual report, intimating the achievements of
the students to the parents.
The program ended on a patriotic note with the national anthem. The cultural splash made the day of the
audience and left them to bask in its memories.

Real Life Hero-
Vir Chakra (VrC) Awardee:
Colonel Sachin Annarao Nimbalkar
The saffron month of August started with an
inspiring and thrilling interaction with Colonel
Sachin Annarao Nimbalkar, a Vir Chakra
awardee. Colonel Nimbalkar narrated his hair
raising experience at the Kargil war with
Pakistan; how the Delta Company, under his
command, successfully captured Tiger Hill top
in the Drass sector from the East in a multi-
pronged attack on the night of 3/4 July 1999.
He started his narration very humbly, describing
the oddity of the task given to them and then
divulged into the horrifying details about bullet
showers, rocket launchers, inclement weather
conditions; bloodshed, mayhem and the
numbing sense of bereavement of a fellow
soldier.
The students, unusually quiet, listened with
clenched fists and eyes fixed on the Colonel. By
the end of the session the students, brimmed
with admiration and adulation for the Colonel
and his men, were gleaming with enthusiasm
and had many question for him.
The questions put up by the students amazed a
everyone present there, being too profound for
their young years. Some of the them are as
follows-"How did you parents and family feel
when you were at war?";" Is India better than
Pakistan in ammunition and weapons?"; " Sir,
Why did you choose to join the army?"; "What
was your age when you fought against Pakistan
in Kargil?"; " How were you able to survive,
when so many bullets were being shot all
around you?"; "If you are given a chance to
choose a profession again, would you still be
an army personnel?" etc. Colonel Nimbalkar
answered all the questions patiently and
satisfied the curiosity of the students.
All the students were so motivated by this
rendezvous that many of them expressed a
desire to join the armed forces in the future.

SPIC MACAY- A tryst with Indian culture
and ethos
'SPIC MACAY, Society for the Promotion of
Indian Classical Music And Culture Amongst
Youth is a non-profit, voluntary movement with
its primary objective as to expose today's
students and young people to the beauty, grace
and wisdom embodied in the age-old Indian Art
forms and its heritage. It is a movement by, for
and of the students. Classical music and dance,
dating back to antiquity, are the chief medium of
creating awareness of this culture amongst youth.
SPIC MACAY regularly organizes events in
which some of the greatest living exponents of
these art forms travel to schools and colleges
throughout the world demonstrating and teaching
about the many facets of Indian culture &
heritage.'
The Global Edgers were privileged to get an
insight in the ancient art of Kathakalli dance
performance by the esteemed dancer, Mr.
Kottakkal Chandrasekharan , Principal of PSV
Natyasangham in Kottakkal.
The students learned that kathakali dance often
showcases stories from Ramayana, Mahabharata
and there are 101 popular stories showcased
through this dance drama
Enactment of a play by actors takes place
to the accompaniment of music (geetha) and
instruments (vadya). The percussion instruments
used are 'chenda', 'maddalam' and 'ekkada'.The
story is portrayed solely by hand movements
(Mudras) and facial gestures (Nava Rasas ).The
nine main facial gestures: Sringaram (amour),
Hasyam (ridicule, humour), Bhayanakam(fear),
Karunam (pathos), Roudram (anger, wrath),
Veeram (valour), Beebhatsam (disgust),
Adbhutam (wonder) ,Shantam (tranquility) were
presented as part of the introduction to the main
act. The elaborate costumes of the performers
give an ethereal feel to the whole act.
The students were mesmerised by the inebriating
performance which was based on the story of
Nalcharitha, a lovestory of Nal and Damyanti
from Mahabhartha.
We are deeply thankful to SPIC MACAY giving
us a peek in the exhilarating kaleidoscopic
cultural extravaganza: Kathakali!!

Dear All,
It’s a great privilege to be an Indian, in an era
where we have become a knowledge hub in the
world; thanks to various measures taken by the
Government through its Literacy Mission and
reforms in the education sector, as we celebrate
our 66th
Independence Day.
Real freedom is to identify and remove the
roadblocks in our country’s development, such
as poverty, illiteracy, corruption and other such
social evils.
In the words of Swami Vivekananda,
“Education is not information that is put into
your brain and runs riot there. It is the
manifestation of perfection already in man...
That education by which character is formed,
strength of mind is increased, and the intellect is
expanded and by which one can stand on one’s
own feet. We must have life-building, man-
making, character-making assimilation of
ideas,” he stated. This is the time for us to pause
for a moment and think back the sacrifices made
by our freedom fighters and their contribution to
our nation, to become a free India.
We, as students have a great task in hand to
make India as a knowledge driven economy in
the years to come.
Can we not create innovative products or
solutions like our brotherhoods do in the west?
Can we not create disruptive innovation with
our knowledge base and strengths? Can we not
create our nation as a centre of attention from
knowledgebase standpoint?
My dear friends, the answer to the above lies in
our hands and the way we steer ourselves
towards true freedom!
Jaihind...

Positon paper prepared byRuchira Ravirala for

Country: Vietnam
Topic Area: The Health Hazards of Climate change
and Seasonal Trends
Climate has influence on the habits of human life and
also affects the human environment and physical forms.
Global warming leads to a series of changes in the living
environment, significantly affecting the health of the
human population. Indo-China peninsula is going
through drastic climatic changes as per the global
warming reports, since Vietnam is located in this region,
P a g e | 11
Newsletter for the month of August
it is susceptible to diseases caused by climate change
As per the world bank report (2009), Vietnam is one of
the developing countries which is most affected by
climate changes due to its long coastline, dense
population and high reliance on agriculture and natural
resources. There are more incidences of vector borne
and diarrheal diseases among both adults and children.
North Vietnam experiences a very cold climate which is
the cause for frostbite, pneumonia, bronchitis chiefly
and in extreme cold weather there is an outbreak of
influenza. South Vietnam experiences warm and humid
climate which favors rats and mosquitos to breed in
large numbers, resulting in diseases such as Dengue
fever, Japanese B encephalitis, Dysentery and Diarrhea.
Especially, the poor and the children in the country side
of Vietnam are most exposed to diseases caused by
climate changes. However, there is no quantitative
study providing reliable scientific evidence on the
impact of climate change on public health in the
country. In fact, in most of the developing nations
including Vietnam, climate change is not properly
integrated with health policy, strategy and planning.
The ministry of health has issued an action plan in the
recent past on climate-change adaptation that includes a
focus on the healthcare sector as well as an emphasis on
raising public awareness about the effects of climate
change. The main objectives of the action plan are to
estimate the scale of possible pandemics that could
appear as a result of climate change and identification
of adaptation measures when such changes happen.
Vietnam is now developing a universal healthcare
system, which will cover all residents and provide them
with basic healthcare, for which, they are closely
working with Thailand’s government to model its
universal healthcare after their experience.
The new law is expected to be in force by
20142.Vietnam’s long-term health and development
goals as outlined in the Five-Year Plan for the Health
Sector (2011–2015) and the National Strategy on
Protection, Care, and Improvement of the People’s
Health (2011–2020) currently are developed, along
with the Five-Year Socio-Economic Development
Plan (2011–2015). Through its national five year
health plan, the Government of Vietnam seeks to
develop an extended and robust healthcare network at
the national, provincial, district, and commune level.
Emphasis is directed at promoting disease prevention,
primary healthcare services, and access to care at the
commune level in mountainous, remote, and isolated
areas in order to enhance public health performance.
While there is an effort from the government of
Vietnam to develop strategy for addressing the health
issues of its people, resulted either due to the long war
or climate change in the region there is a big gap
between policy making process and scientific
researches in the country which needs to be narrowed
for a better policy development and implementation.
The climate change and its adaptation need to be
considered in its health policy making. The country
should take the help of health scientists,
epidemiologists and doctors to build reliable
epidemiological evidence that climate factors and
climate variability associated with disease pattern of
major infectious diseases in Vietnam. Adaptation in
health sector requires interdisciplinary cooperation
between ministries, institutions, health professionals,
climatologists , disaster experts etc .and need
awareness rising and behavior change for
strengthening adaptive capacity. Primary Health-Care
network, Red Cross and other NGO networks and
community engagement can play an important role in
creating the awareness.
P a g e | 12
Newsletter for the month of August
The country should have early warning system,
preparedness and disease control programs based on
climate/disaster risks assessment and interventions.
Vietnam should outline a joint plan to be shared among
various sectors on climate change adaptation and
preventive health measures.
