DESCRIPTION
This project was a concept for an electric car charging station which was about to enter the market that year. Electric cars are certainly a better solution to transportation needs than fossil fuel cars but they do have some major pitfalls. They take 40 minutes to charge, only have a range of about 150 miles (for now), and if their energy demands are not met via renewable energy sources we are just replacing one fossil fuel sorce for another. The concept for this project was to keep the program flexible so that it could adapt to different uses in the future and to offset the electrical needs of the cars with renewable energy sources.

Tidal PotentialThe Pacific NW has the capacity to produce 2,110 TWh of energy from tidal resources which is half of the national demand.Although there is little to no visual impact from Tidal Energy, it could potentially effectmarine ecosystems in a negative way if not carefully sited.
There is currently only one Tidal energy power plant in the world.
Tidal energy harvestingcan achieve 80% efficiency.
Solar PotentialThe sun produces approximately 1KWh/10SF per hour of energy
Although still a developing technology there are solar panels which have reached 86% efficiencyThere is enough available solar energy in the Pacific Northwest to meet all energy demands forthe region for the foreseeable future
There are 30,9000 MWh worth of photo voltaics currently installed in the Pacific NW
Solar energy is becoming 3-5% cheaper every year
The Pacific NW receives moresolar energy per acre than Germany which is the world’s leader in solar power productionFuture Station Solar Energy Potential Estimate:20,000 SF x 168,000 Gas Stations in the US= 3,360,000,000 available SF x .8KWh / 10SF/hr= 26,880,000 KWh Potential x 1Car charge / 24KWh

Wind PotentialMontana alone has enough available wind energy to meet one quarter of the demands for the entire US.The Pacific Northwest has the potential to generate 137,000 MWh of electricity whichis four times the demand for that region.
Since 2001 wind generating capacity has expanded at a rate of 49% per year
a 5 MW wind turbine can produce 15 million KWh of energy per year, enough to power more than 1,400 households
Future Station Wind Energy Potential Estimate:168,000 Gas Stations in the US185 KWh x 168,000 Stations
= 33 Thousand to 1.3 Million Charges per hour= 840 Thousand to 6.4 Million US Households per Year
Geothermal PotentialThe Earth has 3 PWh of energy potential, That's 10 to the 15th power. This makes ita massive yet finite source.
Although this technology functions best in particular locations there is the potential for low heat geothermal power in most areas.
The Pacific Northwest has the potential to generate more than 2,600 MWh of electricity from geothermal power which is enough to meet the annual needs of almost 2 million US households.
Geothermal energy can beproduced at a cost of 4.5 to 7.3cents per kilowatt making it Competitive with fossil fuel interms of profit potential.
87% of homes in Iceland are heated using geothermal energy
In 2008 There were 250 Million Cars and 130 Million Homes in the US
In 2008 The US consumed 3,816 TWh and 7.4 billion barrels of oil.
In 2008 The US Produced 5,750.5 Tg of CO2, 207.8 Tg of CH4, and 40.8 Tg of N2O. The average US household consumes 10,000 KWh annually
A Passenger Car Tire is 25-33% oil by weight and weighs an average of 22 pounds
The average car consumes about 39 barrels of oil a year
That's 23% of global consumption.

E StationThis station located on the I5 highway corridor and consequently is seen by many people every-day, thus there is an opportunity both functionally to recharge cars and produce energy and sym-bolically as a forward thinking entity where people can go the relax and learn.
The Purpose of this station is to offset the carbon emissions created through the production of energy required by electric vehicles via renewable sources. In doing so an icon is created, one which embodies progressive problem solving and sus-tainable technology.
The building’s main features include a huge solar array, a wind harvesting park, geothermal heating, a large storage capacity, and a sustainable show-case and learning center.
40 minutes per changeOne of the major challenges that the implementation ofelectric cars faces is the fact that they currently take 40 minutes to change and have a range of about 150 miles per charge. This station is located at a criticalstop between Portland and Eugene where an electriccar would have to recharge in order to reach one ofthese major cities. Because of this fact the stationwould need to have a large capacity and a wide varietyof activities to entertain the users while their car chargessome of these types of activities are portrayed in this brainstorm collage, they include:
ShoppingRelaxingRecreationLearningGivingBusinessEatingExercise
With these 40 minutes there is a large opportunity tomarket ideas and products. It could also result inan individual devoting 40 minutes of there time daily, weekly, or monthly to a cause such as better physicalhealth, mental learning, or relaxing. Perhaps being forced to take 40 minutes and give it to yourself periodically could be a large benefit.
