electrolysis: provoking a reactionMetals are extracted from their ores through smelting, a combination of melting and chemical reactions. Electrolysis is often the only process possible, using direct current to provoke a chemical reaction.

High temperatures, high currents and high reliabilityThe very nature of the electrolysis process means that it demands enormous quantities of DC power, supplied in a reliable and seamless manner. Aluminium electrolysis cells work at low voltages of 5 or 6 volts, but require currents of 100,000 amps or more, heating the cell to over 1000°C. A power loss for even a short period can result in a production loss of days or months.
