    Comments on EV

Battery Electric Vehicle offer quiet, pollution-freeoperation

    Far cleaner than gasoline-powered vehicle

However, EV is not pollution-free, it produces indirectenvironmental impact. The electricity generation is frompower generation.

However, it can be produced from alternative energysource.

Require an infrastructure of battery management

Range limited improvement in battery, electric motor andpower conversion

    Hybrid Electric vehicle

    Has series and parallel topologies

A high portion of commercial vehicles useparallel

    Fuel can be fossil fuel

Can design can use alternative energy suchas solar or wind.

    Dep. of Electrical Engineering

    ..Power the futurehttp://perc.polyu.edu.hk

    The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

    Parallel Configuration

Has a direct mechanical connectionbetween the PU and the wheels, alsohas an electric motor that drives thewheels

The vehicle has more powerbecause both the engine and themotor supply powersimultaneously.

Most parallel vehicles do not need aseparate generator because the motorregenerates the batteries.

Because the power is directly coupledto the road, it can be more efficient.

Series Configuration Power is transferred from

chemical energy to mechanicalenergy, to electrical energy, andback to mechanical energy

The engine never idles, whichreduces vehicle emissions.

The engine drives a generatorto run at optimum performance.

The design allows for a variety ofoptions when mounting the engineand vehicle components.

Some series hybrids do not need atransmission

Advantage of Hybrid Elect. Car Regenerative braking capability helps minimize

    energy loss and

Engines can be sized to accommodate averageload, not peak load, which reduces the engine'sweight.

Fuel efficiency is greatly increased. Emissions aregreatly decreased.

HEVscan reduce dependency on fossil fuelsbecause they can run on alternative fuels.

Special lightweight materials are used to reducethe overall vehicle weight of HEVs.

    Conclusion

EV range per charge still limited by thebattery

Usually 100km is common. Higher rangeneeds more intelligent and material.

This includes: higher energy density, higher

current (fast speed) battery, lighter material, higher efficiency of machines, driver andpower converter
