MIXED EMOTIONS ON NEW SHOWDisapopintment was pretty evident during the

NEW show and exhibits last month in San Fran-cisco and it may take some real effort to put togetherthe reasons why so many distributors stayed awayfrom the exhibit area.

There was do doubt that distributor attendancewas very good from other parts of the country butit seemed as if the western distributors did not finda "close range" program of any great interest.

One manufacturer told me that they did over60% of all their business the first two hours theshow was open and from then on it was almostwasted effort. It is true that the show was packedthe first morning it opened but from then on youcould have shot off a canon in any aisle without hit-ting more than two or three.

There is a great amount of money invested in thisshow and it is a shame that it is not thoroughlyviewed by the people who should be taking the in-terest. Why then is the show area ignored exceptfor a token view the first morning and a rush forhome?

One good reason could be just plain changingtimes. The industry is much more competitieve to-day than ever before in history. Manufacturers nowhave full representation all over the country in theform of rep firms. On top of this they have re-gional sales forces and factory men working thedistributor's customers. Everyone is keyed to in-creasing business and by the time a distributor getsto such an event as NEW he has the "sold out" signhanging around his neck.

The profit forum was generally a good programand provided some interesting and important in-formation. The hospitality rooms did a land officebusiness and North Broadway had its share of roam-ing romeos. The only ones that seem to suffer werethe exhibits and we had the idea that this was themain reason for such a program.

Last year's program in New York was met witha great deal of success with the grumbling kept to aminimum. Maybe a western location is not in thecards since the number of distributors is sparce bycomparison. We never could understand the firstwestern show being held in San Francisco, exceptfor its central location in the west, but I am afraidthat Los Angeles would have its problems as well.

Plans now indicate that the Show Corporationwill move its show back to Chicago next year andthen head again for the West in the form of LasVegas. Maybe a move to the glamour city will be agood one but don't look for distributors to hangaround the booth area any more than two hours thefirst morning . . . if they get up that early.

DEALER DAY ALSO FAILSDealer Day at NEW was also a failure as dealers

did not take advantage of the great opportunity,with the exception of RCA Victor Distributing Cor-poration's "Day at the NEW show" promotion thatbrought over 150 people to San Francisco from LosAngeles. A few of the other local L. A. distributors

also had a trip promotion going but other than thatthe local Bay area dealers stayed away.

The only logical reason I can think of for the lackof interest was the cost to get in. It just doesn't makesense to charge dealers to attend such a show whenthey are direct customers to the majority of exhibi-tors. It is a lot like charging a dealer an admissionfee to enter a distributor's facility.

When we were operating the Pacific ElectronicTrade Show, which was also a big disappointment,we sent out free tickets to everyone and anyone. Infact, the first year we even bound free tickets intoESD in order to build attendance. The first year,and anyone can tell you, the freeway was stackedsolid with dealers wanting to attend the Great West-ern exhibit center to view the show. The only prob-lem was that this show was really not fish nor fowl.Most of the exhibits were industrial and after thedealers took one look they never came back thefollowing two years.

I wish that I knew the answer or that someonedid. It is possible that everyone is about showed outincluding the manufacturers and the poor guysthat have to man these booths. The distributors, thedealers, the manufacturers and even the magazinepublishers may need some time off from attendingAssociation, business and other meetings in orderto get a deep breathe before starting all over again.

NEW CSEA LEADERSHIPLast month we witnessed some dramatic changes

in the leadership of the State wide California StateElectronics Association. New faces made their pres-ence known on the Board of Directors through thedeclining to run of several old timers.

In Southern California we saw Virgil Gaither re-place Emmett Mefford who had been a director formany years and also State President. In NorthernCalifornia we saw Larry Schmitt and Oakley Dexterreplace Mike Fusaro and Lee Hoy. All of these menare fine individuals who have done an outstandingjob for their local associations and CSEA. Each hascontributed much to the industry and a loss of oneman's thinking will be picked up by the fresh newapproach that always comes with new energy andvigor for a new job.

At the same time, it was interesteing to see theelection of three Southern California dealers to toppositions. In the past there has always been a north -south type of alignment but this was not evident atthis year's convention. Ed Fort is an outstanding in-dividual who will lead with strength and direction.Hugh Wilkins has already demonstrated his abilityto organize and promote a plan or program. CappLoughboro from Ventura has done a fine job assecretary and represents the dealers on the BERDR.Oakley Dexter is truely a fine individual with anoutstanding background in Association work as wellas being a business success in Northern California.The most important point is that all four of thesemen have the ability, the know how, and the per-sonality to be President of CSEA. The organizationis truely fortunate to have this caliber of men tolead the Association in 1966-67.

TELEVISION SERVICE CALLS-It is notwithin the purview of the Better BusinessBureau to state how much should be chargedfor a TV service call. However, because wereceive frequent complaints from disgruntedcustomers who feel they have been chargedtoo much, it might be worthwhile to reviewthe costs to the service company in makinga $5.50 service call. A service truck willmake an average of six calls a day for agross of $33.00. The truck is driven an aver-age of 80 miles at a cost of 15 a mile fora cost of $12 per day and the service manis paid $3.00 an hour or another $24 a dayfor a total daily cost of $36, or a net lossof $3.00 a day. Certainly some profit is madefrom the sale of tubes, but the additionalcosts of equipment, bookkeeping, advertising,rent, utilities, etc. tend to make the $5.50service call a losing proposition. Industrysources expect TV service calls to raise inthe near future to $7.50 for black and whiteand $8.50 for color. Needless to say, at theseprices the customer has a right to demandEXPERT service and chances are, becausethe service companies can afford to hire bet-ter men and buy better equipment, he'll GETexpert service.Dear Don:

In response to your April Editorial "What'sIn A Tube Size," I feel compelled to givemy answer and would like it printed for allto read.

As a service dealer with ethics I havebeen informing all my clients that have orhope to have color television sets the truthabout the true size of rectangular televisioncolor picture tubes and their relation to 21"round color picture tubes. I have been doingthis ever since I found out about it fromthe magazine "Radio -Electronics" (Jan. 1965,pg. 77). This is just another example of mal-practices of many electronic home entertain-ment equipment manufacturers. The servicedealer and service technician have in largepart acquired their mostly undeserved "blem-ished" status with the public because of ex-travagant claims by manufacturers. I believethat most technicians have serviced at a per-sonal sacrifice trying to make dangerous (tothe technician), time consuming (what serv-ice dealer can say he does a good thoroughjob and gets fully paid for it nearly all thetime), inadequate (poor service accessibility)designs perform as claimed by the manufac-turer.

The trouble with the F.T.C. ruling is thatthey did "ignore the obvious" and did notrequire picture tube size designations by theviewable picture width.

CSEA NEWS WIREA ROUND -UP OF STATE AND LOCAL NEWS OFTHE CALIFORNIA STATE ELECTRONICS ASSOCIATION

The Zone "B" Council of CSEA, in the Bay Area, has set forth certain policies in regardsto action of the group in the future. The Council agreed to submit any recommendationsthey might have, in writing, to all Board of Director members. That any requestsconcerning action by the State's Executive Secretary should be submitted through theChairman of the Zone B Council and that plans should get underway within the near futureto insure a complete CSEA convention program for next June.

A special communication was sent out last month by Executive Secretary James Wakefieldasking all members to notify his office concerning all activities by CATV firmsthroughout the State. Although CATV is needed in many areas throughout the State, it isfelt that the service industry must stand tight on regulations regarding theirfranchise. Many chapters have been able to insert legislation in the franchise thatprohibits the function of service on the part of any firm receiving a CATV franchiseand, it is felt, everything should be done to continue this practice wherever andwhenever franchises are being considered.

Outstanding cooperation has been achieved between the Santa Rosa TV Association and thePacific Gas and Electric Company regarding the interference in TV reception sometimescaused by loose wires, cross bars, etc. on power poles. A meeting was set up betweenofficials of both groups with an agreement reached that whenever suspected faulty wiresare discovered the Utility is to notified and prompt action taken. The chapter reportsthat in all cases so far the work has been taken care of immediately by P. G. & E.

The new Board of Directors of the California State Electronics Association has takenformal action to O.K. an agreement for insurance coverage with the California PhysiciansInsurance Council to take effect on August 1st. A run down on coverage is included ina special article in this month's issue of ESD. The program actually increases thebenefits now enjoyed by participating members at less cost. The plan was organized anddeveloped by Emmett Mefford past board member from Riverside.

The North San Diego County Chapter of CSEA recently presented a certificate ofappreciation to Hurley Electronics. Ron Wilson, representing Hurley's, thanked the groupfor this award and assured them that they will always try to cooperate with theindependent service industry. During the same meeting a report was made on the recentcertification tests and an explanation made of test results. Ed Fort, who organized thetest program, stated that the test was being changed to a multiple choice and would beavailable for dealers to take it within the near future.

The Zone F. Council of CSEA has written the State Board of Equilization regarding thestatus of sales tax on service contracts and in warranty parts. This seemed to be acommon problem of whether or not sales tax should be charged for this type of work.A report is to be made at the next meeting.

Zone F Council of CSEA has decided against participation in the Los Angeles County Fairin September. Committee Chairman Harry Midkaff reported to the Council that in hisopinion a full year -around program of public relations was more important than a one shotdeal at the Pomona Fair. The committee also felt that there were too many other projectsunder way at this time for the group to do the kind of job necessary. The Zone Directorywill also be discontinued for this year.

The Zone's Television Audience Poll was also discussed at some length with Hugh Wilkinsbeing asked to evaluate the program and to make recommendations for the expansion of therating poll. Although the results of the first poll have been completed the report hasnot been made available. ESD will try to present this material in the next issue.

The next Board of Directors meeting has been set for September 11th in Los Angeles. Thiswill be the first regular meeting of the new Board and further details will be furnishedby the State office.

The Zone "B" Council of CSEA will hold their annual outing November 19th aboard theHarbor Princess in San Francisco Bay. The favorite Bay Area attraction features a shorttrip to the Galleon Restaurant in Alameda for dinner and dancing.

Art Blumenthal has just been elected as the new President of the TSDA of San MateoCounty, a chapter of CSEA. Blumenthal takes over from outgoing president Larry Schmittwho was recently elected to the Board of Directors of the State Association.

Lee Hoy has just been elected as the President of Zone B with Wes Keys named as VicePresident and Ken Deedler as Secretary. All three officers have been active in CSEA formany years with both Hoy and Keys being past Directors of the State Association.

CSEA HOLDS ANNUAL CONVENTION

FORT ELECTED AS NEW PRESIDENT

The tenth annual convention of theCalifornia State Electronics Associationwas held last month at the Jack Tar Ho-tel in San Francisco with Ed Fort ofSan Diego being elected as the newState-wide President.

The annual event was held in SanFrancisco to take advantage of the Na-tional Electronic Week Show that wasbeing held the same week at the Conven-tion Center Civic Auditorium.

A special President's "Early Bird"cocktail party was held on Friday eve-ning with two local Los Angeles Dis-tributors acting as host for over 150delegates and their wives. Andrews Elec-tronics of Burbank and Hurley Electron-ics of Inglewood provided the refresh-ments and received a special thanksfrom the Association for taking such aninterest in the State convention.

On Saturday the old Board of Direc-tors met to conclude the pending busi-ness of the Association an to act as anominating committee for new State of-ficers. Following this part of the pro-gram the Board recessed to hear a pre-sentation by Mr. David A. Coolidge, Su-pervisor in the Electronics Section ofParks Job Corp Center in Pleasanton.

Mr. Coolidge explained the work ofthe Job Corp center and the programthat has been set up to train young men

for careers in the electronic service in-dustry. The program is divided into fourparts and begins with a basic course inelectronic parts assembly. After a stu-dent completes this portion he moves in-to Basic Electricity on into Basic Elec-tronics and Radio Repair and then intoTelevision repair in both black andwhite and color.

Although the program is only a yearold, Mr. Coolidge indicated that some 50

students are expected to complete thebasic electronics and radio repair andshould be ready for television workwithin the next few months. The entireprogram takes close to two years to com-plete and there is a definite possibilitythat these people will be seeking servicework within the not too distant future.

Mr. Jack Phillips. Manager of Partsand Accessories Division of CalectronCorporation in San Francisco, was thefeatured speaker at the afternoon's ses-sion and reviewed the Television Indus-try as the Industry with a second chance.Phillips, a former service dealer and pastPresident of the San Francisco chapterof CSEA, talked straight from the shoul-der on a level that was understood byeveryone in the audience. He discussedmany of the mistakes that were made bythe service dealer and indicated that thetime was right to make money in theservice of home entertainment products.According to Phillips. the future hasnever been brighter and with the moresophisticated circuits being built intomore and different products there is nolimit to the earnings a good business-man can make during the next tenyears.

A Nery stimulating series of questionsand answers developed following hisformal presentation with all angles be-ing studied and viewed. Of particularimportance was the concensus of opinionthat the future is faced with more andmore factory service with the independ-ent. as we know him today, evolving in-k) a specialist in a particular productline.

On Sunday morning the general ses-sion of the Association was held withthe election of new officers being ofprime importance.

A report from the nominating com-mittee included two names for StatePresident. The two men recommendedfor consideration were Ed Fort, Boardmember from San Diego and LarrySchmitt. Board member from San Ma-teo. Nominations were then opened fromthe floor with Hugh Wilkins of Los An-geles being nominated. At this momentLarry Schmitt asked to have his nameremoved from the nominations leavingFort and Wilkins as the candidates. Fortwas then elected as the new State-widePresident.

Following this election. Hugh Wilkinswas re-elected Vice President and Oak-ley Dexter of Larkspur was named asthe new Secretary. Capp Loughboro ofVentura was re-elected as Treasurer.

Later in the afternoon the new Boardof Directors met and signed a new con-tract with the California Physicians In-surance Corporation for a State-wideHealth and Life Plan.

In reviewing the new plan it waslearned that the Association memberswill now receive much more coveragethen through their previous carrier and

TOMORROW'S IMAGE OF THE

TELEVISION SERVICE INDUSTRY

A couple weeks ago on a very popular television programcalled, "Gilligan's Island," watched by millions of viewersall around the country, the main character, Gilligan, sug-gested an another character who plays the part of a million-aire that they call in a television service technician to helpthem out with one of the problems that they'd run into. Themillionaire answered, "overtime I can afford, golden time Ican afford, but television serviceman time, nobody canafford." This got loud yoks from the television studio audi-ence and we can be sure that it got plenty of laughs fromthe nationwide viewing audience. Why did they get laughs?Because everybody expects to be overcharged and evenexorbitantly charged for any type of television service today.This is a good illustration of today's image of the televisionservice industry. After many years of trying very hard toclean up the industry through legislation, through self-helpprograms, through training programs and many many dol-lars having been spent, the only people that know about itare the people within the industry itself. The public stillgoes on feeling that this is the type of service they're goingto get; overpriced and generally unsatisfactory. We're lookedon as the greatest band of crooks since Jesse James went outof business. And I know of many people who would like tovote us in to brand new headquarters. Happens to be a littleisland out there on San Francisco Bay that hasn't beendoing much for the last few months. Going hand in handwith this poor image is the public's unfortunate ignoranceof what goes into the training of a television technician andinto the servicing of today's sets, of the money spent to keephim trained and at the top of his professional knowledge.

TV Only A Piece of Furniture You Plug In

The average customer thinks of the television set as a pieceof furniture which they plug into the wall and out of itcomes sound and pictures in glorious, living color and blackand white and high fidelity sound. And because they spendX number of dollars for it, it should never fail. This is theonly kind of education that they can receive about thisbusiness and comes to them from the advertising that theyget now. They still look upon the television or the highfidelity unit as being another appliance in the home, like atoaster or any other small unit that they've purchased in thestore and plug in and expect it to work for year after year.This, we know, is not the case. This, we know, takes train-ing. This, we know, takes a well qualified man, who expectsto be paid well for his services and who will run into prob-lems that have never been encountered before in the Ameri-can home. This poor image coupled together with this lackof knowledge on the part of the public gives us a problem.And it's a big problem. Not only does it create constant

friction, it also creates a situation which we face today asour main reason for our need for a new image in tomorrow'sservice industry. The problem is what I call "the new van-ishing American." The vanishing American used to be theAmerican Indian. Now he's the television service techni-cian. Why is he a vanishing American? Why doesn't hewant to be a television service technician anymore? Well,let's face a few facts. Who wants to go through the train-ing that it takes to bring him up to the level of being evena bottom -of -the -ladder technician, one who'll require on-the-job training, who will then have to face two or three yearsmore in an apprenticeship position with constant trainingahead of him, many nights of study and after all of this,continue to go into the home, and be looked on as being, inmany cases, an outright crook, and to be called a crook,and to face the abuse and the problems that he does in thehome, when with the same type of training, he can go intothe allied electronic fields, such as any of the space agetechnology programs or computer electronics, make as much,if not more money working a nice, comfortable, 5 -day weekin air-conditioned, well -lit offices and not have to face anyof the grief that he would as a T.V. service technician.Why should he? There's really not much reason, unlesshe's a very dedicated soul. Color television sales have leapedupward and are continuing to climb. The number of tech-nicians to service them has lept downward and is continuingto drop. You all know of this problem, but we haven't triedvery much to eliminate it. Many people have run off intheir own individual directions, and, perhaps have madesome sort of impression. But the strength of the industryas a whole is needed. We can change this situation and wemust change it. In October of 1965, I realized the problemwas getting out of hand and I wrote to a state agency,asking if they would be able to provide us with any help.They referred me to another agency, who in turn referredme to another agency, who in turn referred me to anotheragency, who in turn referred me to another agency, whoin turn referred me back to the original people I had firstcontacted. Well, after this happy little roundelay, I finally,in sheer desperation, wrote directly to President Johnson.I told him that with the unemployment situation the wayit was in this country, and with the great need to re-educatepeople into new technical positions, we should be the primerecipients of federal or state funds. Well, my office was sofilled with investigators, I thought I might be under inten-sive investigation by the C.I.A. for a while and I had mygear and equipment packed, ready to be sent to Vietnam.North Vietnam. However, it did bring about one thing.We had a series of meetings with the top manufacturer'srepresentatives and service representatives together with the

state and federal agencies in Los Angeles and it was decidedthat the state and federal people would, through theiroffices, run a series of approximately 20 schools, running4.1. weeks apiece to re-educate what might be called thecream of the crop of the unemployed, who would be selectedthrough aptitude tests and re-trained as television and high-fi technicians, or at least trained inthe basics of televisionand high-fidelity service. After a couple more weeks, how-ever, it turned out that there would be no funds availableuntil July. and this being back last December. I decidedthat there wasn't much future in waiting. I met with theCalifornia State Electronics Association with the workingname of T.U.B.E.S. This to stand for-"Towards Univer-sally Better Electronics Services." The association to beformed from those industries directly associated with andrelated with the television and high fidelity service of today.

What is T.U.B.E.S.?These industries being our own service industry, the manu-facturers who make the television sets and who must havethem kept in good condition to continue selling them andthere's nothing worse for them than the customer who says,"I'll never buy another Magnavox, or another Philco, oranother C.E.." simply because he received poor or insuffi-cient service. The advertising agencies who depend on thesponsors for their bread and butter and the sponsors them-selves are dependent upon the television sets to present theirproducts in the customer's home. An illustration of howimportant the television service industry is to the sponsor isperhaps the old Newport cigarette commercial. One manwas retained-a $30.000 a year man to find the bluestwater in the United States for the background for Newportcommercials. And it really brought excellent results. But ifthat blue water comes out looking purple on the televisionscreen. all that moneydepends on the service industry to make sure that it doescome out looking good. The networks depend on the man-ufacturers and the sponsors and the advertising agencies tobring them the sponsors. so they may operate as profitableorganizations. With a hard look at these allied industries.we find that all of them are dependent. to a considerableamount on the television service industry. All of that talent,and all of the money. all of the time that is spent in networkbroadcasting, advertising and sales has done a wonderfuljob for the increase of color television sales alone, for in-stance. They have built a wonderful picture. But withoutthe T.V. service industry it can be likened to building anathlete without a left foot. We are that left foot. Andwe're a damned important left foot. The reason forT.U.B.E.S. is to create a source of funds to launch a strongand continuing public relations campaign to strengthen andimprove our image. A good example of exactly what publicrelations means to a company is a quotation from the Eng-lander Company, a subsidiary of Union Carbide Company.who say. "Public relations to us. basically, is trying to makepeople in general more aware." Very important item, beingaware. To think favorably about people and products. ratherthan to push sales of any specific product line. That'sexactly what we need: to make people in general moreaware. The idea of T.U.B.E.S. was received very enthu-siastically. But we needed one item which was common toall the industries and would be a focal point to draw alltogether in this all-out push to form an organization thatcould educate the public, support technical training schools.create a better image of the television service industry, tointerest future technicians into our industry, to franklylure them away from the other electronic industries, asthey have been directed away from us. And I think wefound that focal point in the television audience poll. Thiscame about as a result of a conversation that Mr. Hugh

Wilkins of C.S.E.A. had a few years back with an exec-utive of N.B.C. The executive suggested that the televisionservice industry could do a lot more for all related industriesby taking an in -the -home poll of the viewing habits of theindividual customers we service. They would then be get-ting the reaction of all those people who are really interestedin television, who were interested in high fidelity, whowere interested in FM toward their programming. Theywould know exactly what programs were watched and theirtime slots. And also, we could offer a check-out for thesponsors on thetype of job that any one particular commer-cial was performing by taking spot checks before and afterany particular commercial was run on a saturation basis.

Tap Tried in Los AngelesThe television audience poll program was tried in the LosAngeles area. running for the week of April 15 this year.It was quite successful. The results have been tabulated andat the present time arc ready for distribution to thoseinterested. However, the Los Angeles Chapter of C.S.E.A.has put all the money that they possibly can into this proj-ect. More is needed from the industries I have mentioned toretain a top public relations organization. which we haveand who have already done a good job announcing theprogram and spreading word of our needs. I appeared onC.B.S. on the Big News in Los Angeles with amazing re-sults. had articles written in the New York Times andseveral newspapers around the nation that have broughttremendous interest in these problems. and also strength-ened the fact that ours is not a local problem. but a nation-wide problem. and something which must he licked imme-diately. Tomorrow's image of the television service industrymust he one which is far and away from the current ideaof the handyman who comes into the home with his hat onone side. somewhat dirty jacket, a bunch of tools andgreat. big bill ready to present to the customer. It musthe changed. it can be changed. and a united effort can doit. It must be made evident that the television servicemanis a well -trained, educated man. A man of high technicalknowledge and qualifications who is there to work on ahighly complicated piece of electronic equipment. the mostcomplicated piece of equipment that has ever been put intothe American home, one which does and will need service,that will have breakdowns, that will have failures in themand those failures can be taken care of by competent organ-izations of technicians anywhere in California or the nation.

Image Built by SensationalismThe image we have at present is built up because of thething that sells newspapers: sensationalism. And when youare able to put out a headline, such as was put out in Cali-fornia not too long ago, when after many months of inves-tigation. 20 service organizations were checked out fordishonest dealings; 20 organizations representing a fractionof one percent of all the service organizations in Califor-nia were indicted and 19 were convicted for fraudulentactivities. The headline that came out the next day was,"19 Out of 20 Television Companies Dishonest." Partiallytrue, definitely sensational but misleading, once again, giv-ing the idea to the average customer that television serviceis a crooked operation and one to be watched, not lookedtowards. We can change this image. We can change it bybetter public relations and better education of the public.The plumbers have dont it wonderfully through their pro-gram of P.I.P.E. We can do it through T.U.B.E.S. Every-one's help is needed-everyone's. Ours is a present indus-try. It is very much a future industry. The future of theindustry and tomorrow's image depends on you, dependson all of us. Let's make it a glowing image to be proud of.

Better TV Reception and "What Else NeedsFixing" to Boost Summer Sales

Over 850 service dealers throughoutSouthern California have already signedup for the American Institute for BetterTV Reception promotion program thatkicks off next month, according to JackCarter, local chairman.

The program details are scheduled tobe released at a special "kick-off" atthe Hollywood Palladium at 7:30 p.m.on July 20th. All dealers who havesigned up for the program will be in-vited to attend with their wives to hearhow virtually every television station inSouthern California will be helping tosell better antennas.

Robert Mullen, National Chairman ofthe AIBTR in Washington, D.C., saysthat the Los Angeles program will bethe biggest and best of any staged thusfar nationally. The Institute, in its sec-ond year, has developed a format usedin other market areas whereby the localT.V. stations supply public interest spotsto familiarize the consumer with theneed for better TV reception throughbetter antennas. With color set salesrunning at twice the 1965 rate, andSouthern California being one of thetop markets, this should have a pro-found effect on this Fall's business.Utilizing the Western Union operator25 Program will insure the dealer thatthe consumers requesting informationas to where an antenna can be pur-chased will be directed to their stores.

The local AIBTR Board consists ofthe local representatives of the spon-soring manufacturers. Dealer sign formsare available at all leading electronicparts distributors. Any dealer who hasnot yet signed up is invited to do soimmediately.

The latest statistics released by theBureau of Electronic Repair Dealer Reg-istration indicates that the consumercomplaints continue to decline at arapid rate.

With over 7,000 complaints receivedsince the Bureau went into action thefirst year showed that the average

monthly complaints received was 387.In 1965 this average was cut almost inhalf with the average complaints permonth declined to 183. So far in 1966the latest figures indicate that a furtherreduction is evident with the first fewmonths average at 154.

At the same time, figures indicatethat the number of conciliations is in-creasing with fewer and fewer com-plaints ending in the courts. The firstyear records indicated that the Bureauaverage about 21/4 conciliations closedper month which went all the way to11-1/6 per month in 1965 and is work-ing at a record rate of 22 per monthso far in 1966.

RCA EXEC URGES TVSERVICEMEN TO KEEPPACE WITH DEVELOPMNTS

The nation's television servicemenwere urged last month to "retread your-self as often as necessary just like thephysician or engineer" to keep pace withnew developments in consumer electron-ics.

The advice came from Paul B. Garver,Geenral Manager, RCA Parts and Acces-sories, in the keynote address at the Tri-State Council of the Television Service-men's Association's Telegram 66 conven-tion at the Traymore Hotel. Approxi-mately 250 independent servicemen andtheir wives from New Jersey, Delawareand Pennsylvania were present.

"The consumer appreciates the im-proved performance of products usingnew techniques," Mr. Garver said. "Heis equally appreciative of the servicemanwho understands, accepts and can repairthe product using the newest develop-ments."

Mr. Garver said he was referring tosuch new developments as circuit boardsand integrated circuits.

"The introduction of new techniquesinto the manufacture of television setshas not reduced the demand for qualifiedtechnicians," he said. "The increase inuse of television sets has placed a de-mand on technicians. This demand hasfar overshadowed any reduction in serv-ice caused by the improved reliability.

The resignation of Lecoy was accepted dur-ing the last meeting of the NEA board witha great deal of regret. "Paul is one of ourgreatest assets and we are deeply grateful forhis many contributions over the years," statedDick Glass, President of NEA. His resigna-tion was due to ill health and business pres-sures.

FTC REQUESTS TSA OHIOTO RESCIND ACTION ONRCA SERVICE COMPANY

The Federal Trade Commission has re-quested the TSA Ohio to withdraw its resolu-tion in th fall of 1964 regarding the allegedaction of RCA and RCA Service entering thesales and service of television receivers to mo-tels and hotels.

Although here is still great concernthroughout the country on institutional salesand service, the TSA Ohio has agreed to res-cind this action due to the interpretation byothers of the TSA resolution and the under-standing that has brought about the studyof the motel -hotel sales service problem.

13 NEA DEALERS RECEIVECERTIFICATION AT RECENTNEA BOARD MEETING

Thirteen members of the National ElectronicAssociations were awarded certification certifi-cates at the recent meeting in Wichita.

The certificates were awarded by Certifica-tion chairman Howard Bonar after these mensuccessfully passed the approved certificationexamination and were eligible for this honor.At the Wichita meeting, nine more memberstook the examination under the supervision ofthe Apprenticeship and Training committee.

In other parts of the country, nine men tookthe examination in Elkhart, Indiana in earlyMay, three in Warsaw, Indiana and severalin Fort Wayne. These exams were given underthe supervision of Northern IESA Vice -Presi-dent Clyde Smeltzer who is now the newlyelected President of the FESA in Fort Wayne.

WINSTON-SALEM, NORTH CAROLINA TO BE

SCENE OF NEA CONVENTION AUGUST 18-21Certification and apprenticeship programs were the highlights of the NEA board of directors

meeting held in Wichita late last month.

Reports from all over the central part of the United States indicated that the NEA approvedself certification examination and certificate presentations were well accepted and of greatbenefit. During the three day meeting, 13 Kansas members of NEA were awarded their certifi-cates indicating they had passed the multiple choice technical examination. At the same time,an additional 20 members took the occasion to take the examination and are awaiting results.

The major portion of the program was thepresentation of the new NEA-OJT apprentice-ship program that is now underway. Jerry Bar-koukis, former president of NEA, and the newNational Apprenticeship coordinator, went overin detail the contract between NEA and theBureau of Apprenticeship Training. He out-lined what was expected of local associationsin order to qualify for the OJT program andthat he was available for aid in setting uptheir programs.

The second "leadership Training School"sponsored by NEA was well attended with topservice dealers from all over the country tak-ing part in particular segments ranging from"Planning a year's program" to "N\ hen to

remove your local president from office.

Jack Hughes, representing the Wichita Cred-it Bureau and author of the book "How toOrganize and Operate a Trade Association,"was the key speaker at the Saturday nightbanquet. He spoke on personal improvementhabits as they are needed in the service busi-ness.

A special thanks was given to the KansasElectronic Association and its Wichita Chapterfor taking on the job of setting up this Boardmeeting and for turning out during the threedays of activities. A special thanks was givenby President Dick Glass to Rolla Swan andBob Hermreck of the Wichita chapter and toLarry Premer, President of KEA.

The new Sheraton Motor Inn in Winston-Salem, North Carolina will be the scene of the1966 national convention of the National Elec-tronic Associations.

Pete Fabbri, President of TSA Michigan, isgeneral convention chairman and he reportsthat tentative plans are already completed andurges all interested members to make plansto attend as soon as possible.

Over 350 delegates are expected to attendthe three day event with reports being madeby every major committee from all over thecountry. The annual election of officers willhighlight the program on Sunday with threeoutstanding men being nominated for the officeof President. Jack Betz, President of TSA ofIowa, Leon Howland and Pete Fabbri, Presi-dent of TSA Michigan are all experiencedmen in association work and will provide out-standing leadership in the year to come.

Annual presentation of awards and prizeswill also be presented to the "OutstandingState President," Outstanding Local Associa-tion President," "Outstanding NEA CommitteeChairman," "Outstanding Officer of NEA,""Outstanding Editor," and others. The associa-tion will also present awards to national manu-facturers or distributors demonstrating out-standing service to the electronic esrvice indus-try.

Pete Fabbri of Michigan, Leon Howland ofIndiana and Jack Betz of Iowa have been nom-inated for the office of President of the Na-tionla Electronic Associations and will cam-paign for the position at the national conven-tion to be held August 18-21 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

The announcement of their nomination wasmade last month at the quarterly board meet-ing of NEA held in Wichita, Kansas as partof the general program. All three candidateshave been a part of NEA since its formationseveral years ago and all are equally qualifiedto do an outstanding job of leading the na-tional service organization.

In conclusion, if there was one maintheme of this convention it would haveto be summed up with the word "flexa-bility". The service industry is not go-ing to able to take a status quo position.It is going to have to make changes,bend with the pace of American busi-ness and make its own place in thefuture.

The problems of bait advertising, tele-phone book listings, $2 housecalls, indus-try crooks, license laws, legislation, etc.are going to have to take their place inhistory and make room for technicalskills, good business, specialty productsand a lot of hard work.
