LAUNCHERS SATELLITES TELESCOPESSafran Electronics & Defense designs and produces navigation and engine control solutions for launch vehicles, based on our state-of-the-art electronic and microelectronic components.

Safran Electronics & Defense’s electronic and optical solutions for satellites perform a variety of key functions, including precise and reliable navigation, high-resolution and multispectral imaging, and a wide range of electronic macro-functions.

Safran Electronics & Defense offers state-of-the-art optical solutions for telescopes, to help astronomers successfully implement their most ambitious projects.

NAVIGATIONSafran Electronics & Defense’s navigation systems based on hemispherical resonator gyros (HRG) provide high-perfor-mance attitude control and pointing for satellites.

POWERSafran Electronics & Defense designs the voltage converters and power distribution units that keep the satellite supplied with the electrical power it needs for many different functions, including control, data transmission, and even to power the electric thrusters that raise the orbit and/or keep it “on station”.

DRIVE Safran Electronics & Defense designs and produces electric motors and the associated sensors on satellites to keep their solar panels and antennas pointing towards the Sun or the Earth.

NAVIGATIONSafran Electronics & Defense designs and develops gyro units and inertial navigation systems based on hemispherical resonator gyros (HRG), which guide launch vehicles by measuring its position in space. Radar transponders use the radar echo principle to help determine the launcher’s trajectory.

CONTROLSafran Electronics & Defense’s REEC (Rocket Engine Electronic Controller) sends orders to the engine’s pumps and valves to ensure cost-effective operation and propulsion system reliability – like the full authority digital engine control (FADEC) units on aircraft.

POWERWith the increasing electrification of control components, Safran Electronics & Defense draws on several decades of experience in the design and production of electric motors for space vehicles, along with the associated detectors, to produce complete actuation solutions.

CONTROLWe also offer smart computers and control units for satellites. These computers stock, process and transmit all types of data. The control units receive ground commands to control the satellite platform and the payloads, in terms of increasing transmission frequency or data rate, targeting a specific point on Earth, etc.

DETECTIONSafran Electronics & Defense’s front-end electronics packages are used to amplify signals from all types of sensors (VS, IR, UV, X-ray, Gamma ray) so they can be detected and processed by systems on the satellite, including video pc boards.

OBSERVATION Safran Reosc designs and develops innovative astronomical instruments, along with a comprehensive range of optical components that address each customer’s exact requirements. Safran Electronics & Defense’s optics specialist delivers complete customer support, from initial design to operator training for local servicing. The product line includes:

• Large single-piece mirrors, up to 8 meters in diameter

• Segmented mirrors

• Lightweight mirrors of glass or ceramic

• Thin glass sheets for adaptive optics

• Field corrector

• Filters and thin-layer technologies to ensure top-flight spectral performance for parts up to 1.6 meters

• Turnkey remotely-operated telescopes, including the dome, weather station and re-processing facility

OBSERVATIONSafran Reosc, a Safran Electronics & Defense subsidiary, designs, develops and tests high-performance optical components and systems, and markets them to spacecraft manufacturers for major science and Earth observation programs. The company’s product line includes:

• Lightened mirrors (of glass or silicon carbide), including attachment systems

• Dioptric and catadioptric optics

• Infrared optics

• Custom-designed filters and coatings (cryogenic IR, pixilated or stripe filters)

• Complete telescopes, fully assembled and aligned (glass-ceramic, CFRP or all-SiC).

• Ground optical test equipment (reference flat mirrors, off-axis collimators and dishes, various optical instruments).
