Monday: Real Life Experiences: Grilled Cheese, Please!
Ask student: who has eaten a grilled cheese sandwich? How is a grilled cheese sandwich different from a cold
cheese sandwich? What does the grilling do to the cheese? to the the bread? What happens to the cheese in the
sandwich if it is left uneaten? Can you think of another food with cheese that is better with heat (pizza, macaroni and
cheese, cheese enchiladas, cheeseburger)? Can you think of a food that is better without heat (ice cream, gelatin,
yogurt)?
Tuesday: Connect with your child at home:
Water, Heat, and Change
Your child has learned about the changes to materials from heat. Water is a very simple material that you can use to demonstrate the changes caused by heat.
Begin with an ice cube. Explain that an ice cube is water in a solid form. Let your child hold the ice cube; it will begin to melt in his or her hand. Explain that your child's hand is giving off heat. This heat causes the ice to change from a solid to a liquid. This is a clear example of a change from heat.
Next, place the ice cube (if there is any of it left) and a cup of water in a pan. Then, place the pan on the stovetop and tum on the burner. From a safe distance, observe the steam rising from the water. Explain that steam is liquid water rising into the air and becoming a gas. The heat from the stove causes the water to change from liquid to gas.
Finally, place a lid over the pan of boiling water. A clear lid would be ideal if you have one, but it is not necessary. Allow the lid to rest above the boiling water for about one minute. If the lid is clear, your child can observe the water condensing on the lid as it is happening. If not, remove the lid and allow your child to observe what is on the underside of the lid. Ask your child to describe his or her observations. Explain that as the hot water contacts the cool lid, the water cools, and then changes back into a liquid.
Here are some questions to discuss with your child:
1. How could we tum the water in the pan back into a solid?2. What other things have you observed changing by adding heat?3. What other things have you observed changing by removing heat?

What will happen to your chocolate bar on the table?
Prompt Thinking like a scientist, explain what will happen to your chocolate bar after being left in the sunlight.
