Welcome to Summertime! DISCOVER, CREATE + COLLABORATE

Kingsley’s Summertime Program for Elementary students (ages 6-8) is project-based, creative, and collaborative. Daily field trips, Boston Museum of Science projects, and Museum of Fine Arts studio classes create a summer that you’ll never forget!

During each one-week thematic session, students flex their problem-solving skills, explore the city around them, and make friends through fun, hands-on activities. Students will turn their Boston neighborhood into a learning lab and use their unique experiences to inspire exciting projects. In addition to the Special Field Trip listed on page 4, weekly field trips include: the newly renovated Boston Public Library, Charles River, Museum of Fine Arts, and historic sites of the Freedom Trail.

“I wanted an experience for my son that not only was fun but also taught him valuable skills in science and math. It’s wonderful to see him so excited about what he’s learning with his new friends at Kingsley.

Elementary Weeks 1-6 AGES 6 THROUGH 8

W E E K 1 (JUNE 22 - JUNE 26): YOUNG TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERS SPECIAL FIELD TRIP: MIT MUSEUM

Students will design innovative “maglev” or magnetic levitation trains that use magnets instead of wheels! With their new insights into the science of magnets, students will design, test, and improve their own tabletop maglev transportation systems. At the MFA, they will study the evolution of transportation as depicted through art before designing their own new system.

W E E K 2 (JUNE 29 - JULY 2): YOUNG ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERS SPECIAL FIELD TRIP: WATERWORKS MUSEUM

Students will investigate all of the Earth’s beauty through the MFA’s collection of pastoral paintings. As young engineers, students will apply their knowledge of the water cycle and investigate the properties of filter materials as they plan, construct, test and improve their own water filters.

W E E K 3 (JULY 6 - JULY 10): YOUNG CIVIL ENGINEERS SPECIAL FIELD TRIP: PRUDENTIAL SKYWALK OBSERVATORY

With additional trips to the Prudential Skywalk and the Longfellow Bridge, students will experiment with beam, arch, and suspension bridges to plan, build, and test their own. At the MFA, students will explore Greek and Roman architecture and sculpture to influence their bridge design.

W E E K 4 (JULY 13 - JULY 17): YOUNG MATERIALS ENGINEERS SPECIAL FIELD TRIP: FENWAY PARK

Students will visit Boston architectural landmarks, such as Fenway Park and the State House. In the MFA art studio, they will create perspective drawings that explore shape and dimension, and as young engineers, students will explore earth materials to build, test and improve walls of their own structures.

W E E K 5 (JULY 20 - JULY 24) : YOUNG ELECTRICAL ENGINEERS SPECIAL FIELD TRIP: MUSEUM OF SCIENCE

Students will explore the properties of conductors and insulators, schematic diagrams, and circuits, with a final engineering design challenge to plan, create, and improve their own alarm circuit. At the MFA, they will examine abstract expressionism and create vibrant artwork that reflects their understanding of electricity.

W E E K 6 (JULY 27 - JULY 31) : YOUNG OCEAN ENGINEERS SPECIAL FIELD TRIP: NEW ENGLAND AQUARIUM

Students will learn about sounding poles and sonar as they map a section of ocean floor and design their own submersible, equip it with research instruments, and retrieve packages from a model ocean floor. At the MFA, they will use watercolors to create a lush underwater landscape.
