Most shapes have corresponding forms.
Shapes Forms
Shape = a defined flat space enclosed by a line, 2-D
having width and height, but NO depth.
Form = a defined space with surfaces, 3-D having width, height, AND depth.
Hollow forms perceived as volume
Solid forms perceived as mass
Space = the area between or within shapes.
Shape, Form, Space
Most shapes have corresponding forms.
Shapes & Forms
GEOMETRIC Think Math (circle,
square, triangle)
Often vertical, horizontal, or angular
Found in Architecture and Manufactured Items
ORGANIC
Think Nature (flora, fauna, sea life)
Irregular, free flowing, informal
Shape affected by lines and space surrounding
Rectangles & Squares: Constructed of vertical
and horizontal lines, suggest stability, confidence and assertiveness
Shapes with curved sides: Project attributes of
curved lines; vertical & horizontal effects more subtle
Triangles, pentagons, other shapes with diagonal sides:
Suggest drama and action, but less stability

NOTE:
The way in which a designer
subdivides a shape can alter the audiences perception of
that shape.
Can suggest an overall
effect of directionality, simplicity, and complexity; thereby affecting the physical and psychological effect of the shapes on the audience.
Historical Period or Style of Production can affect the use of shape.

Structural Shape and
Form • The units that make
up an object contribute to and are inherent in its structural shape or form.
• Breaking down objects to their geometric shapes will help in checking proportions and balance as well as psychological and intellectual response to shapes.

Static & Dynamic Shapes
A shape emphasized the direction of its dominate lines.
Subdividing a shape vertically visually lengthens and narrows it. Subdividing a shape horizontally shortens and widens it.
A shape tends to emphasizes the part of the object at its edge (hem or balcony).
Shapes standing away from an object or body add apparent weight.
Visual Effects of Shape
A shape conveys the psychological effect of the line
enclosing it and the space within it.
Impressions of size and shape are initially established by the overall silhouette and its relationship to the surroundings, and then the internal subdivisions become related to the silhouette.
The larger the shape/form, the closer more dominate they appear on stage, thereby pulling focus. Smaller shapes look further away.
Visual Effects of Shape cont’d
Volume and mass of shape swill seem different on
different body shapes, in different locations on stage, when made of different materials, and against other objects/humans
Smaller shapes look further away; larger shapes closer
Visual Effects of Shape cont’d
The more equal the shape the less interesting an
more predictable.
