ELERMORE
ENDEAVOUR
Term 1 Week 5 28 February 2020
Dear Parents and Carers,
An interesting week of learning at Elermore Vale, with
many different opportunities for all of our students to
engage in across the school.
Mr. Boatfield is teaching STEM (Science, Technology,
Engineering and Mathematics) this year across the
school. Students have been busy working with
technology – from the basics of logging on to a
computer, coding Bee Bots, to building new worlds in
Minecraft. It will be interesting to see what our students
can learn, as well as teach us, through the year.
We were joined by Senior Constable Murray at
Thursday’s assembly where she spoke about her role
as a police officer, safety concerns and responsibilities
of our students in the community. Students got a chance
to ask many questions about police life. Sen Constable
Murray is the community liaison officer and is keen to
develop her presence and relationship with the school.
Mrs. Lane has joined us as a teacher on 1T while Mrs.
Tapp takes leave. Mrs. Lane comes to us with many
experiences across schools in Newcastle. We have
been impressed at how wonderfully 1T have welcomed
Mrs. Lane to our school.
Congratulations and thank you must go to Mrs. Simkus,
who started her 30th year of volunteer work in our school
this week. Starting with her children in Kindergarten in
1990, Mrs. Simkus joins us three days a week to listen
to our students read. She describes EVPS as her ‘home
away from home’. This is an amazing contribution to our
school and community.
The mozzies are out in full force at the moment – we do
encourage you to organise a repellant for your children
during this period. Aerosol insect repellant can not be
used on school grounds due to health concerns for
other students. Please use bands or roll on varieties.
The school cannot provide this to students.

Preschool students are learning through play!
Early Years Learning Framework - Practice 3 ‘Learning through Play’ “Play provides opportunities for children to learn as they discover, create, improvise and imagine.”
Mr Boatfield has been teaching technology to our students every Wednesday. We are currently learning about robots and coding using the Bee-bots. We started with basic skills such as turning them on, clearing old instructions and moving the Bee-bots in a forward direction. We are now learning to use more complex coding to move the Bee-bots in a number of directions and even have races. Learning about technology is fun!
NINJA WARRIOR COURSE
The children have been designing and constructing their own playground as a ‘Ninja Warrior Course’. It began as a small obstacle course in the play equipment area, then a second course on the grassed area. The children designed their courses using the existing equipment in a variety of new ways and have loved adding big challenges to the course. Their latest design joins the two areas together across the concreted area and incorporates safety measures and instructional maps. The children have documented all their plans, maps, course outcomes and thoughts. “Having agency means being able to make choices and decisions to influence events and to have an impact
on one’s world.” Early Years Learning Framework
