Dear Friends,We have been extremelyblessed here at NewLife Childrens Home(NLCH) to get to seeGods power at work inthe lives of so manychildren who come to usfrom a variety ofdifficult backgrounds. We count it a privilege

to be a part of what Godis doing in the lives oftwo young brothers,Javier and Eliseo Tax,and a little boy who hada very bleak beginning:Josu Barreno.

NeglectJavier (15) and his younger brother,Eliseo, (12) came to NLCH in May2007. Their mother and father werealcoholics and left the boys to be

cared for by their older sisters, whowere 18 and 13 years old when theboys came to us. The sisters tried totake care of the boys, but since theirparents were not caring for them, theyoften had to go into Guatemala City tofind work. This left Javier and Eliseoon their own to find food and shelter. These basic needs were continuallyunmet. They did not know from day today where they would sleep. Theywould often go to construction sitesand carry heavy cement blocks for a

few centavos or bread. School was animpossible dream....

FearWhen the boys were not beingneglected, they were exposed to thevolatile, and explosive behaviorexhibited by their severely alcoholicparents. They lived in a state of fearand the company of their own familyonly exaggerated that fear. The oneplace that they could find some peaceof mind was when they were afforded

the opportunity to stay with their aunt, who was a live-in maid at the time. She could rarely get away with

keeping the boys becauseshe was already caringfor 8 children, and heremployer did not like forthere to be so manychildren on his property.Seeing no better solutionfor the boys, their auntturned to NLCH forhelp.

JavierWhen he first arrived,Javier was very timidand fearful of the newsurroundings. During theweeks following hisarrival, and for the pastfour years, Javier has

adjusted very well to livingat NLCH. Recently, Javiershousemother, Gledia Maldonado, described him as, intelligent, respectful, and hard-working. He is

still a quiet and reserved young man,but he has made many friends and getsalong with everyone around him. Hedoes very well in school, and he wantsto become a pilot when he grows up.

How you can pray for Javier: Pray for his studies and for healingfrom his past. Pray for the generational curses ofhis past to be broken.

And whoever welcomes a little childlike this in my name welcomes me.(Matthew 18:5, New International Version)

EliseoEarly on, we discovered that Eliseohas some learning difficulties. Weactually began classes for specialneeds children with him and Josu inmind. These classes have been ablessing as well for several otherchildren in our neighborhood. SpecialEd. is a luxury that very few familiesin Guatemala can afford. Eliseo hasbeen able to take advantage of theseclasses and is doing very well. He is avery joyful and affectionate little boywho loves to play. One of hishouseparents told us that, Eliseoloves to take broken toys and makethem into something new; he is verycreative. His favorite past-time isflying kites. It is wonderful to seethese boys relax and enjoy theirchildhood, being taken care of insteadof having a hand-to-mouth existence.

How you can pray for Eliseo: Pray against generational curses andthat he can be free to be who Godcreated him to be. Pray that God would give him extrawisdom and knowledge despite hislearning disability.

JosuJosu arrived at NLCH when he was 2years old; he could barely walk andhis speech was unintelligible. He was

born to a fifteen year-old girl in anincestuous relationship. When he wasa few weeks old, his mother was takeninto a home for girls where shereceived instruction on child rearing. However, when she was alone withJosu, she would become abusive. Thedirectors of the home felt that it wouldbe best for him to be placed here atNLCH.

In the beginning, we were veryskeptical if Josu would ever be ableto lead a normal life because we werenot sure of the extent of hisintellectual incapacity. Watching himgrow into a lively young man has beena great privilege for all the workersand staff here at NLCH. There are stillobstacles to overcome while raisingJosu; there are times when he doesnot respond to discipline and becomesangry and hot-tempered. He becomes

emotional and is very sensitivewhen he receives any kind ofpunishment. We are in need ofprayer to help us betterunderstand how to discipline andencourage him in an effectivemanner.

Josu has an infectious laugh. He loves to tell jokes and be thecenter of attention. He enjoysdancing to music and putting onimpromptu concerts where he

sings into an invisiblemicrophone. He has made manyfriends in the home and in hisclasses at school. We arethankful for the other childrensacceptance of him; indeed, theyhave loved and helped him tolearn from the beginning of histime here.

How you can pray for Josu: Pray he would feel the love of theFather through Jesus Christ in his life. Pray for transformation of heart andthat he could learn to submit toauthority.

Dear friends, thank you for faithfullysupporting the ministry of NLCH.Through your partnership, we are ableto offer hope and a lovingenvironment to children like Javier,Eliseo, and Josu. It is difficult tothink of what life might have been likif they had not been brought here, andour prayer for them and for all ofthese children is that they willexperience the new life that the Lordhas for them and be changed from achild incrisis to a Child inChrist!

    Sincerely,

    !Kendon S. Wheeler
