ELEVATE MAP KEYCurrent version:

4.4.0, 15/04/20 (changelog)

last update of the map key: 15/04/20

VARIANTS:There are two different variants of the mapstyles contained in the downloadsrespectively:

ElevateI developed Elevate for mountain hiking in thealps. At first it was based on the standardhike and cycle map style of Openandromaps,but has been completely revised since. Iadded additional variants by and by for otheruses, by user requests.

Everything should be self-explanatory withouta key, as far as it's possible with thepossibilities of mapsforge. Therefore I basedit on the presentation on paper maps and

guideposts in German and Austrian areas.Unified symbols and colors are used. Athigher zoom levels names of amenities andareas are shown. As many things which arerelevant for hiking and travelling as possibleare shown without coming too much to thefront or eliminating one another - e.g. bigsymbols or captions - therefore somesymbols and captions are shown at highzoom levels only.

With Elevate 3 overlays were introducedwhich make it possible to switch certainelements on or off. Those can be chosen, aswell as the map styles, directly within the app.

Elevate has been tested and developed withcurrent versions of Cruiser and OruxMaps.

ElementsElements is a modification of Elevate and ismade for sparsely populated/mapped areasor countries, mostly backcountry usage, e.g.the outback of Australia, Iceland outside ofthe cities etc.

Elements contains the same map styles anddetails as Elevate. Only all content is shownas soon as it is contained in the map.Therefore the colored dots at low zoom levelsaren't necessary.

In densely mapped areas this variation is notrecommended, in those it is slow andunclear.

With Elevate 4 Elements can help to findspecific things in the map - just activate only

the overlay which you want to view and notthe others (e.g. "Amenities" if you are lookingfor drinking water) and then all apropriatesymbols are shown as soon as possible.

MAP STYLES:Elevate and Elements contain several mapstyles which can be chosen within the app(how this workds depends on the app).Depending on the map style some captionsand symbols are shown sooner, later or not atall. Every map style has a different defaultselection of overlays which are shown, andfor every map style differen options arepossible.

HikingKey aspect is to have good overview for allfeatures which are relevant for mountainhiking and perceptibility of paths and track,especially their difficulty and character (or ifthere isn't any information about that).Cycleways which are allowed for pedestrianslook similar to footways. As "Hiking" is thebasis for the other map style characteristicslike the display of landscape features areincluded in those.

CityThis is a light version which is especiallyuseful in cities, for example for sightseeing orfor everyday life.

Neither hiking nor cycling routes are shown.

The highly emphasized footways and pathsof "Hiking" are discreet and difficulty andvisibility is not marked. Cycleways which areallowed for pedestrians look similar tofootways.

Additionally for better overview at lower zoomlandscape and protected area names andcolored dots are missing. Therefore thisvariation is most suitable for finding namesof settlements.

A public transport network can be overlayed.

CyclingAs this is a cycling version instead of hikingroutes cycling routes are shown strongly. Thehighly emphasized footways and paths of"Hiking" are slimmer and difficulty andvisibility isn't marked. Cycleways are stronglyemphasized and surface information isshown if it's in the map data. Ways wherecycling isn't allowed are marked with aturquoise cross hatch.

MountainbikeBased on "Cycling" this map syle shows MTBdifficulty levels on tracks and paths, visibilityof paths and MTB routes.

MAP KEY:Captions- Dark Blue are settlements. For best view ofplace names in Elevate 2 (and in Locus withElevate 4) use zoom 12/13, as points ofinterest can collide with place names at zoom14 and larger.

- Black are peaks.

- Red are alpine huts.

- Grey, dark green and brown are landscapenames.

- Green with white outlines are protectedareas.

Other colors of captions are those of theassigned symbols.

SymbolsI hope that the symbols are mostly self-explanatory. Additionally, you can find anoverview image of all symbols including theirnames by opening the image linked below.This image is also included in the PDF mapkey available above.

The colorsmean:

- Light bluemeanstransport andaccomodation

- Brown meansfood, amenitiesand tourism

- Grey/Blackmeans small(natural) detailsor man-made

- Pink meanshealth care

- Purple meansshopping

- Green meanssports oreducation

Most symbols are appearing at zoom 14 orhigher, some important points of interest aremarked earlier by colored dots:(Hiking/Cycling)

Alpine hut

Camp site

Hospital

Public transport stations

Public transport stations are marked by

colorered dots:

Bus stop (large: bus station)

Tram

Subway

Railway

Ferry

Paths and FootwaysBrown - unpavedpath/footway (or path withoutsurface information) withoutdifficulty information

Grey - paved path/footway (orfootway without surfaceinformation) without difficultyinformation, on the top onecycling is also allowed (only inhiking mapstyle)

Hiking paths(Hiking)

Path difficulty uses the SAC hiking scale,however the colors here are according tothose used in the eastern alps.

Additionally trail visibility (if it's available inthe data) is marked by how the paths aredashed.

Yellow - Hiking: flat or slightysloped, no fall hazard, SAC T1;

in the example withoutinformation about trailvisibility (this is only shownon paths with difficultyinformation): long dash, shortdash, short spaces

Blue - Mountain hiking:partially steep, fall hazardpossible, SAC T2;

in the example trail visibility isexcellent or good: very longdash, short spaces

Red - Demanding mountainhiking: not always visible,may be secured, hands maybe needed, partly exposedwith fall hazard, SAC T3;

in the example trail visibility isintermediate: medium lengthdashes and spaces

Black - (Difficult/demanding)Alpine hiking/Via Ferrata: notrail, very exposed, climbing,glaciers etc., SAC T4-T6;

only with adequateexperience, inform yourselfabout it before you go;

in the example trail visibility isbad, horrible or no visibility:short dashes, long spaces

additionally T5 paths dashesare broken vertically, T6vertically and horizontal

Safety measuresOn some paths fixed safety measures areincluded in the maps:

A cable, chain or rope to hold onto; here the grey dots on the pathmark the length of the area withsafety ropes

Rungs, stemples, pins

A ladder

Via ferratasVia ferratas are marked with thick grey bars

and a green via ferrata symbol. Depending onhow the data is mapped they can have twodifferent styles:

Mapped as via ferrata

Mapped as a path (includinghiking difficulty)

Hiking routes(Hiking)

Hiking routes are rendered below paths andtracks starting at zoom level 14, till level 13transparent above them.

International hiking routes are blue.

National hiking routes are red.

Regional hiking routes are green.

Local and other hiking routes are yellow.

Waymarks can be overlayed; in lower zoomlevels only a small symbol with thebackground color is shown. If a waycolor isgiven, it is marked along the trail with coloreddots.

In this examplean internationalhiking route inblue with aviolet symbolcalled VAA49and a regionalhiking route ingreen with a redsymbol and thenumber 211 canbe seen.

Cycling routes(Cycling/Mountainbike)Cycling routes are rendered below streetsstarting at zoom level 14, till level 13transparent above them.

International cycling routes are blue

National cycling routes are red

Regional cycling routes are violet

Local cycling routes are turquoise

Mountain bike routes are greenish yellow

In this examplea regionalcycling route inviolet that goesfrom south-westto north-east,besides anational route inred and a alocal route inturquoise.

Mountain bike difficulty levels(Mountainbike)Mountain bike difficulty levels are shownaccording to the MTB Scale, you can find alldetails there.

Additionally trail visibility (if it's available inthe data) is marked by how the paths aredashed.

S0: Blue bars on ways: nospecial driving skills required.In this example you can seehow it is shown on tracks.

S1: Blue-red bars on ways:basic driving skills required,obstacles can be passed over;

in the example withoutinformation about trailvisibility

S2: Red bars on ways:advanced driving skillsrequired;

in the example trail visibility isexcellent

S3: Red-black bars on ways:very good bike controlrequired;

in the example trail visibility isgood or intermediate

S4: Black bars on ways: atleast perfect bike control withtrial skills required;

in the example trail visibility isbad, horrible or no visibility

S5/S6: Several thin blackbars on ways: exzellentmastering of special trailtechniques required or nearlycompletely impassable;

in the example withoutinformation about trailvisibility

Easy hiking path: Yellow barsalternate with brown bars: ifMTB scale isn't available it ispossible to mark easy hikingpaths (according to SAC T1,see above) with an overlay. Ifand how those are rideableisn't for sure, and if it isallowed to ride them dependson local legislation.

MTB Scale uphill is marked by horizontaldashes under ways:

0: Blue dashes: 15% inclinemax.

1: Blue-red dashes: 20%incline max, the two bars withdifferent length also mark theuphill direction - the shorterone points uphill.

2: Red dashes: 25% inclinemax.

3: Red-black dashes: 30%incline max

4: Black dashes: 40% inclinemax

5: Two thin black dashes:uphill riding not possible.

TracksForest tracks and agricultural roads aremarked in Openstreetmap by grade:

Paved track

Unpaved track, gravel road

Track made out of a mixtureof gravel and dirt

Track mainly made out ofdirt/grass, some gravel

Track only made out ofdirt/grass

Track without grade

Bridleway

Cycleways and road surfacesIf a normal road (not tracks/paths) orcycleway (when using cycling/mountainbike)has a different surface than asphalt oranother flat sealed surface it is marked asfollowing, if the "surface" is included:

Cycleways have a blue border.This only means that cycling isallowed here. If the border is acontinous line, the way is paved,dashed means unpaved orunknown. The picture shows anemphasized cycleway in thecycling map style withoutsurface information, which ismarked by thin stripes along theway.

Cycleway which might need across-country bicycle because ofsteepness/roughness (only incycling mapstyle, not MTB)

paved/asphalt

paving stones or similar

cobblestone or similar

compacted unsealed road

loose gravel

natural ground

Option "extended road surfaces":paved/asphalt (on major roadswhite alternating with color ofroad importance, on normalroads just white)

Option "extended road surfaces":no road surface informationavailable

Option "emphasized paved cyclepaths" (Cycling)

Option "emphasized pavedfootways" (City)

Access limitsOnly those access limits are shown, which arevalid for the mode of transportation the mapstyle is intended for. In "Hiking" only if theyare valid for pedestrians. In"Cycling"/"Mountainbike" only, if they arevalid for cyclists. In "City" only general accesslimits.

Local traffic only - only whentravelling to this area.

Private road - only withpermission of the owner.

No access allowed.

Option marking of permittedfoot/cycle paths: usagepermitted - important forcountries like England, wheree.g. a track can only legally beused if it's permitted for thistrack

toll road, marked by red dots

only use with permit (might bewith costs), marked by reddots

Winter sportsTo avoid collisions or not so nice areas skiand sled pistes are marked unobstrusively:
