And he said, “I am your brother, Joseph, whom you sold into Egypt. 5 And now do not be distressed, or angry with yourselves, because you sold me here; for God sent me before you to preserve life. 6 For the famine has been in the land these two years; and there are yet five years in which there will be neither plowing nor harvest. 7 And God sent me before you to preserve for you a remnant on earth, and to keep alive for you many survivors. 8 So it was not you who sent me here, but God; and he has made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house and ruler over all the land of Egypt. 9 Make haste and go up to my father and say to him, ‘Thus says your son Joseph, God has made me lord of all Egypt; come down to me, do not tarry; 10 you shall dwell in the land of Goshen, and you shall be near me, you and your children and your children’s children, and your flocks, your herds, and all that you have; 11 and there I will provide for you, for there are yet five years of famine to come; lest you and your household, and all that you have, come to poverty.’ 12 And now your eyes see, and the eyes of my brother Benjamin see, that it is my mouth that speaks to you. 13 You must tell my father of all my splendor in Egypt, and of all that you have seen. Make haste and bring my father down here.” 14 Then he fell upon his brother Benjamin’s neck and wept; and Benjamin wept upon his neck. 15 And he kissed all his brothers and wept upon them; and after that his brothers talked with him. Scripture Reading: Matthew 15:21-28 21 And Jesus went away from there and withdrew to the district of Tyre and Sidon. 22 And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and cried, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely possessed by a demon.” 23 But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came and begged him, saying, “Send her away, for she is crying after us.” 24 He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” 25 But she came and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, help me.” 26 And he answered, “It is not fair to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.” 27 She said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.” 28 Then Jesus answered her, “O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed instantly. Message: Great Faith Rev. Ted Dennis Special Music Something Good Charge Benediction Postlude

KEEPING IN TOUCH So it was not you who sent me here, but God; he has made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house and ruler over all the land of Egypt.  (Genesis 45:8)  We live in a world that demands novelty. It goes against everything that we hear and see around us to read the same stories and hear the same lessons repeatedly. Dwelling on a topic and learning all that you can about a story or a poem or a list of commandments goes against everything that we have come to believe in this time and place. Going against the grain is an important part of our faith walk. I just completed a study a few weeks ago in which I and a dozen or so members reread and reexamined chapter 37 and Chapters 39-50 of the Book of Genesis. Those chapters contain the story of Joseph the son Jacob. It’s a story that I have heard all my life. It’s also the story that my Hebrew language class was based on in Seminary. It’s a story that I have seen interpreted on the stage and movies. The message of the story is that sometimes when people take action to hurt and kill and exploit people, God transforms what evil people have done and creates something good out of evil. Christian people all over the world believe that no matter how things look. God is at work behind the scenes creating an everlasting realm of peace and security for everyone who will trust in God. This story about God’s work to rebuild what has been torn down and to reclaim what has been lost is a story that we need to revisit often. The story of Joseph is one part of the whole wondrous story of the Bible. It does however contain the line that I keep revisiting when It’s hard to see how God could possibly be at work in the circumstances and events around us. In Genesis 50:20 Joseph reassures his brothers a second time, “As for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today.” Humans are sinful and we sin. However, God eventually causes all things, good and bad, to serve his good purposes.
