The course begins with optics and waves and progresses through electric circuits before covering traditional mechanics topics. Conceptual physics is an activity-based physics course in which students are challenged to solve problems with given materials using the knowledge gained during the class. We will have a weekly engineering contest to see who can use the physics concepts we learn in class to construct the tallest tower, strongest bridge, best parachute, or boat that can hold the most cargo, just to name a few. Students will be expected to explain and justify their reasoning during this course. Conceptual physics will help develop analytical-thinking and problem-solving skills.

Computer Science AP Part A emphasizes object-oriented programming methodology with a concentration on problem solving and algorithm development and is meant to be the equivalent of a first-semester college-level course in Computer Science. It also includes the study of data structures, design and abstraction, but these topics are not covered to the extent that they are in Computer Science AP Part B.

It should be emphasized that these courses represent college-level achievement for which most colleges and universities can be expected to grant advanced placement and credit. Placement and credit are granted by institutions in accordance with their own policies, not by those of the College Board, the AP Program or Elgin High School.

The AP Computer Science courses are introductory courses in computer science. Because the development of computer programs to solve problems is a skill fundamental to the study of computer science, a large part of the course is built around the development of computer programs or parts of programs that correctly solve a given problem. The course also emphasizes the design issues that make programs understandable, adaptable, and, when appropriate, reusable. At the same time, the development of useful computer programs and classes is used as a context for introducing other important concepts in computer science, including the development and analysis of algorithms, the development and use of fundamental data structures, and the study of standard algorithms and typical applications. In addition, an understanding of the basic hardware and software components of computer systems and the responsible use of these systems are integral parts of the course.

The content of the college-level introductory programming course has evolved significantly over the years. Starting as a treatment merely of language features, it eventually incorporated first the notions of procedures and procedural abstraction, then the use of modules and data absorption. At most institutions, the current introductory programming course takes an object-oriented approach to programming that is based on encapsulating procedures and data and creating programs with interacting objects. The AP Computer Science courses have evolved to incorporate this approach. Current offerings of the AP Computer Science Examination require the use of JAVA. Those sections of the exam that require the reading or writing of actual programs will use JAVA. The exam will not cover all the features of JAVA; it will be consistent with the AP JAVA subset. The AP JAVA subset can be found in the Computer Science section of AP Central. NOTE: You must complete both semesters of the course to receive credit and take the Computer Science AP Exam.

JAVA, Eclipse, and Winzip software are required for the course. There is an e-book textbook that will be provided free of charge to students. Recommended, but not required, are “Be prepared for the AP Computer Science Exam in JAVA” and “125 Multiple-Choice Questions in JAVA” (both published by Skylight Publishing).

—Introduction to Engineering

Design and Principles of Engineering

Engineering Technologies @ RAMTEC is designed as a three level program: Level I, Level II and Level III. Students are encouraged to participate in the full-day program. Full-day students will also be enrolled in the Engineering Technologies @ RAMTEC related class. Half-day students will not be enrolled in the related class. All classes are located at RAMTEC on the Tri-Rivers Campus. Engineering Technologies @ RAMTEC LEVEL I - 10, 11, 12 – 3 Credits (Wt 1.7)

This course trains students to complete state approved competencies in the engineering field. Students learn theory and complete tasks that enable them to gain entry level work in the engineering field as well as giving them the foundation to go on to the Engineering Technologies @ RAMTEC Level II program at RAMTEC (located on the TRCC campus). Students learn blue print reading and computer aided drafting using Auto CAD and 3D modeling software. Students use proper techniques and standards to construct geometric shapes, multi-view drawings, dimensioning auxiliary views, sectioning, fasteners, working drawings, pictorials drawings, and basic architectural drawings. Students will also complete the Project Lead the Way- Principle of engineering curriculum. These areas of study will be dual enrolled when appropriate so students may earn college credit. Students will also get hands-on exposure to basic electronics and robotics as well as competing in Skills USA contest events as well as opportunities to participate in VEX Robotics competitions. FANUC Robotics, Workplace safety, Microsoft Office, professional practices, and professionalism are also covered.

Students enrolled in Engineering Technologies @ RAMTEC Level I will also be enrolled in the Advanced Machining Related class. Students will have the opportunity to learn how to run and operate milling machines, lathes and CNC milling machines. Location RAMTEC (TRCC Campus). Engineering Technologies @ RAMTEC LEVEL II - 11, 12 – 3 Credits (Wt 1.7) Prerequisite: Successful completion of Engineering Technologies @ RAMTEC Level I

Students enrolled in Engineering Technologies @ RAMTEC Level II at RAMTEC (located at TRCC campus) will complete the Project Lead the Way - Computer-integrated-Manufacturing curriculum. AutoCAD and 3D solid modeling software are used to complete engineering projects. Early College Credit Plus options will be available to students so they may earn college credit as well. Students will also have the opportunity to receive “hands-on” training in the following areas: Parker Hydraulics, Allen Bradley PLCs, Advanced FANUC Robotics operations, Yaskawa Motoman robotics and Robotic Lincoln Welding. Students enrolled in Engineering Technologies @ RAMTEC Level II will also be enrolled in the RAMTEC Related Physics class. Students will once again be expected to participate in student competitions in areas such as VEX Robotics, Skills USA and or other approved or sanctioned competitions. Engineering Technologies @ RAMTEC LEVEL III - 12 – 3 Credits (Wt 1.7) Prerequisite: Successful completion of Engineering Technologies @ RAMTEC Level I & II

Students enrolled in Engineering Technologies @ RAMTEC Level III have four options: -Take Engineering classes at MTC/ OSMU through the Early College Credit Plus Program -Enroll in Welding and Fabrication @ RAMTEC Level One -Enroll in Advanced Machining @ RAMTEC Level One -Early Work Placement- Fall Semester of Senior Year.

Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG)

The Jobs for America’s Graduates program is a Career and College Preparedness program available to Junior and Senior students. The program involves two years in school services as well as one year of post-graduation follow-up with students who complete the program. While in the program, the students are given the opportunity to compete at a local, state, and national level, in a wide variety of employability skills competitions. This course also provides students with services outside of school including assistance in employment, assistance for credit recovery, and counseling. Jobs for America’s graduates has many goals including career preparedness, college preparedness, culture and diversity awareness, employability skills knowledge, leadership development, financial planning awareness, and many other applicable real world skills. Students in the course also have the opportunity to tour college campuses via field trips, attend leadership development conferences, compete through an essay competition against other Elgin students for an all-expense paid trip to the National Leadership Development Conference in Washington D.C., and earn community service hours. This course is a “non-traditional” classroom atmosphere that includes real world application through non-traditional learning activities. Organization Dues Apply.
