Removing solids from drilling fluid is fundamental to drilling performance. Solids control has a wide range of benefits, including but not limited to: increased drilling penetration, reduction in mud costs, reduction in disposal costs, and increased bit life. By and large, increased solids removal equates to lower drilling costs for the operator.

Shale shakers are the first line of defense for a properly designed solids control system. Shakers have been used on drilling rigs since the 1940’s and are a significant part of the drilling process. Shale shakers work by removing solids from drilling fluid as the mud passes over the surface of a vibrating screen. The liquid portion of the mud and solids pass through the screen while larger solids fall off the back end and are thus discarded. Drilling fluids are a key aspect of the drilling process and often lubricate

& cool the drill bit and take drilled cuttings from the borehole. Shakers still remain the backbone of any solids control system. As time has progressed, so have these technologies; more advanced and efficient designs have been cultivated including screen technology.

The American Petroleum Institute (API) screen designation has become the standard for the identification of screen panels in the oil & gas industry. API designates the micron opening size (cut point) and the conductance in which the liquids pass through the screen. Elgin’s screens are in compliance with API labeling practices that includes: API designation, conductance in kD/mm, D100 value, and non-blanked open area in square feet. Elgin’s screens are API rated and tested by third party agencies to meet the stringent requirements of API RP 13C. Elgin has also conducted a host of complmenting tests including chemical immersion testing with: diesel, alpha-olefin, calcium chloride, caustic soda and kerosene. In all cases, Elgin’s polyester powder coated screens demonstrate superior environmental exposure resistance when compared to competitor screens. All Elgin products must pass rigorous quality control testing including: coating consistency, coating adhesion properties, and mechanical strength. Designed From the Ground Up

Elgin has taken great steps in the specification of the wire cloth, bonding agents and source material to achieve a long lasting, durable screen for today’s operators. Every screen is composed of a double or triple layered, high quality, 304 stainless, woven wire cloth, 12 gauge perforated punch plate, high grade steel frame and polyester powder coat finish. This combination ensures each screen will meet or exceed today’s drilling contractor needs needs.

Today’s manufacturers focus on the frame structure and shaker fastening applications. Elgin focuses on the multi-layered wire cloth formula and wire diameter used in screen technology. The bottom layer is comprised of a thicker, market grade wire compared to the competition. This yields a stronger base with which the remaining layers can maximize performance during the harshest of drilling conditions. Elgin’s HD2 screens have an average 30% increase in wire diameter versus other manufacturers, while maintaining comparable competitive cut points (Figure 1).

The perforated punch plate acts as the support structure for the wire cloth and is designed with a hexagonal pattern. This increases the non-blanketed surface area across the screening surface for fluid to pass thru. This pattern decreases the chances of screen blinding during operation and maximizes the amount of fluid passing thru the screen. Elgin HD2 screens represent an average 10% improvement in comparable conductance (Figure 2).

The bonding material used to laminate the wire cloth to the plate is a high quality thermal adhesive that sets Elgin’s screens apart from others. All this is bonded to a rigid steel frame that is full-seam welded with cross bars strategically placed to maximize strength when placed in today’s high-g shakers. Polyester powder coat is applied to the finished product that protects the screen from the elements and fully bonds the wire cloth and plate for a long lasting, durable screen.
